This is proof I:
A. Should seek professional help
B. Need to get out more
C. Might be taking the whole “No spend year” a little too seriously
C. Need to understand that it’s okay to drop $0.65 on a new set of undergarments
D. Should stop blogging now because apparently I think writing about buying underwear is okay/not tacky and if the guys at the HH’s work see this it’s going to be really awkward the next time I stop by and drop off lunch.
But come one. When you get a $10 off a $10 Kohl’s purchase coupon in the mail there are some SERIOUS decisions to be made!
Okay. So remember last week when I was talking about needing a new bra but I couldn’t justify spending any money on one since technically the two I have are fine? Well, if you can call failing elastic fine that is.
Anywho, the coupon clearly stated that it was good for $10 off a $10 purchase. Meaning… If I wanted to walk out of the store with a totally freebie, I’d have to find something that was exactly $10, or items that collectively added up to $10. In the past I’ve been successful with socks and t-shirts for the HH.
After a 10 minute search all I could find were some jammie bottoms for the HH that were on sale for $10. But the thing is, he doesn’t need any more pajama bottoms. So really, what was I supposed to do? Grab something we didn’t need? Pass up a $10 coupon because I couldn’t walk out of the store with a total freebie?
Yada yada yada. Eventually I made my way to the intimates section and found the clearance bra and panty section. I found a pink bra with grey polka dots on clearance for $4.80 {totally not my colors!} and was trying to find something that was $5.20 so I could get my total to exactly $10 {I was even willing to get a pair of granny panties or a thong {GAG} and turn around and donate them just so I could get a free pink polka-dotted bra}.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get the total to come out to an even $10.
In the process of looking through the racks though I did find a gorgeous Maidenform bra that I really liked and a great pair of Jockey panties. I sat there for a good 2 minutes trying to decide if I should just pass the coupon off to someone else, or if I should play the role of big spender and shell out some loose change.
In the end I decided a set of new under garments was totally worth $0.65… even if I was breaking one of my goals for 2016.
What do you think?
Was it a good deal and totally worth a little binge spending, or should I have stuck to my guns and not bought anything?

Mavis you totally crack me up! I say collect some cans on your next few walks to take to the recycling center and you will make up your 65 cents. Also makes me think I need to stop at Kohl’s. I need a new bra too!
Stacie says
Totally justified purchase. You can always pick up spare change you find on the ground to add up to .65 and then you technically didn’t spend any of YOUR money; you used found money 🙂
Cenith says
Lol! It was a great buy. I wish I had your will power!
Lisa Millar says
LOL – All that agony!!
So glad you spent the 65 cents.
Think of it this way – eventually you will NEED new ‘foundation garments’ and you won’t get cheaper than 65 cents. If you waited for next year, it would have cost you more, so the 65 cent now instead of $$$ later is smart!
🙂

Look in the couch for some change and call it an early Christmas present from the boy and the hh.
Christina says
It reminds me I really need to sign up for the Kohls coupons! Splurge and spend the $.65 Mavis!
Sam says
Good common sense. I agree with Stacie. I bet you find the 65¢ in loose change, thus not breaking your pledge. Sometimes common sense should override conviction.
Earlene says
Totally a no brainer. Total worth the money, come on 65 cents, what a great buy!
Anne says
A like the idea of picking up change. You can always find pennies on the ground so, you’ll be doing a good turn by picking up “garbage” and gaining your sixty-five cents back. We’ll worth the purchase by the way.
Rose says
Oh Mavis, Girl you are too funny, of course it was a Great buy and you are justified in the .65 cent purchase. Hey I think bras are like shoes you need to be comfortable 😉
Plus I think you’ll be able to find .65 on your walks, in your couch, when you wash HH clothes etc etc…
Linda says
Great buy. And I see nothing wrong with blogging about undies. All most all of us wear them. It’s not a mystery!
Sydelle says
A very smart woman once told me that undergarments are where you should invest good money. She explained that since you wear them every day, the cost per use is what you need to consider. Making a commitment/rule to spend zero is commendable: skipping an insane bargain is inexcusable. The thrill you/we get from analyzing the data and working the deal is worth the 65 cent distraction from your goal. If you were to divide just one year’s worth of use (both items) by the 65 cent cost total of both items, I am sure there was no ‘real’ money spent. If you managed to wear the items for more than a year, then you are probably making money in this scenario. Enjoy. We did.

Great find! Question….you only have 2 bras??? (3, now that you bought a new one) How often do you do laundry???
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. Once a week. 🙂
Lauralli says
Ok, I’m just going to put this out there……so, people really wash their bras after one day’s use just like panties? Totally not the same thing in my book. Surely I’m not the only one who thinks like this. I can’t imagine how many bras you would have to buy to keep that going….the expense….the washing (I only hand wash mine as the washer kills them very quickly)….ladies, chime in……I want to know!
Teckla says
No, I don’t wash bras after every wearing unless I’m doing something really sweaty. Depends on the bra whether I hand wash or machine wash in a mesh bag. Yes, washing, especially machine washing is hard on them. And sometimes, depending on the activity, we might only wear one for a few hours and it wouldn’t need washing just for that. Practicality wins out for me.
Donna in VA says
Doctor got after me for re-wearing bras. If you sweat (yes, it’s summertime and I do sweat) then you need a fresh one daily. Otherwise – yeast infection – and as a BC survivor, she said “God help you if you get an infection in that breast”. I have many, they have lasted for years. Except I accidentally dyed them all a lovely powder blue in the wash some time ago.
I have used the Kohls $10 coupon to buy myself a lovely wool felt cloche had for $.57 and a sweatshirt for hubby for $.04. Spending of pocket change is totally acceptable.
Julie C says
I wash (or at least do a quick rinse) after every wear. I do it while I’m showering and then hang them to dry on the shower head. Once a month or so, I will throw them in the washer in a mesh bag. Sometimes I forget or my schedule gets thrown off and since I only have 2, on those days I do have to wear the same one twice.
Julie says
I love those coupons and that game! I must admit that I did allow myself up to $2.00 on the purchase. I’ve gotten kitchen gadgets, a large Pyrex covered storage bowl, leggings, lot’s of shirts off the clearance rack and a pair of 56 cent jeans that have turned into my favorites. I haven’t gotten one in a long time but there for a while, I was getting one about every 6-8 weeks for at least 18 months.

You and I jumped off the same star honey.
Brianna says
I thought I was the only stingy one with the $10 Kohl’s coupon! I try to go to a store with ‘needs’ in mind and not get distracted by the ‘wants.’ Then I look for the best deal on something we need. I think you did a great job shopping and didn’t you and the girl find that much in change and then some on your log of walks you posted about a week back or so? I think it is justified as ‘no spend’ in my mind. Kudos
Brianna says
Yep, $1.37 in change was found. You still have $0.72 left over after you $0.65 purchase:)
gina says
Lol, uh, yeah, you got a hella deal for .65! No second guessing this one!
Pam says
Hilarious!
Kim says
Just think Mavis, if you hadn’t bought the new bra (with better elastic,) you might be tempted to spend way more that 65 cents for (anti-gravity) boob surgery some day. Hope this thought eases your guilt a little! Tee-hee
Alison R says
Bravo Mavis, Bravo!
Great job and yes, underwear for 0.65 is the exception to the buy nothing new for a year rule!
Cari says
Hey Mavis,
I agree that you got a major deal and no guilt is required! I was once shy of the $10, not realizing the correct sale price of an item. They just don’t give you the change/difference back. Making the sale $0, but shorting myself like .11 cents. Best .11 cents, I never spent!
ilona says
You certainly made the best of a great opportunity … we are consumers, after all; but it’s the way we go about it that matters … you did great! I suggest you do not agonize over your choice; but instead, pat yourself on the back and enjoy wearing those new undies!
