So this year I decided I was going to ease back a bit on my tea consumption {which I have now decided would be a better goal for NEXT year- ha!}. Even still drinking tea, I really do want to make an effort to drink more water. I’m going to try these easy tips to see make sure I get my 8 glasses a day {mostly so I can put my tea-habit guilt to rest}:
- Make it part of every morning. Start off with 1 glass of water every morning first thing. One glass down, seven more to go.
- Add a little lemon or lime juice to water to make the flavor more appealing.
- Whenever hunger strikes, drink a glass of water first to rule out thirst/dehydration.
- Drink a glass of water with each meal. It is supposed to aid in digestion, plus, there’s at least 3 glasses done.
- Add a splash of juice to water. A little cranberry, apple, orange juice, etc. adds flavor without excessive calories.
- Get a reusable water bottle. This way you can measure your consumption, take it with you where ever you go, reduce waste, and get something with a little style–which somehow makes it easier to swallow {pun intended}.
- Fill a container full of 64 oz of water and put it in the fridge–fill your cup or bottle from this container. It will be a visual reminder or how much more you need to drink before the day is out.
- Filter your water. Filtered water tastes and smells better. It will be much easier to get down.
- Everytime you empty your glass or bottle, immediately fill it back up. That way, you always have easy access to it.
- Go one-for-one with other beverages. For every glass of soda, juice, coffee, tea, etc. you drink, drink a glass of water. {This ought to solve my problem completely}
How about you, do you have trouble getting enough water into your day?

No problems getting my daily water intake since we went Paleo. I used to be a diet Pepsi Wild Cherry addict (seriously, I had to drink at least 6 cans a day), but now I have a few ounces of juice in the morning with breakfast and the rest of the day ALL I drink is water and I constantly have a bottle filled reminding me to drink.
I still get stress headaches from business stuff, but the caffeine headaches are GONE! So worth giving it up. I actually don’t even miss the sodas!

Yep, I drink my water all day long. I have my first as soon as I get up with my required pill wait an hour and then my 1 cup of coffee. Sometimes I have another cup of decaff or tea or cocoa later in the day but mostly keep a glass of water on the counter and drink everytime I go in the kitchen.

We use the awesome blender bottles for water. They have several different ones now along with the classic small and large bottles. blenderbottle.com
We started using them with our vitamin/mineral drinks as they are really great for mixing the powders with water or juice. They’d be great for gravies too, or anything you want to mix.

A doctor once told me to drink water through a straw. It makes it easier and will consume more water that way. I also like to add sweet apple slices to water.

Weirdly, drinking out of a straw helps me drink more water, too. My dentist recommended always using a straw with juice, or drinks with sugar and/or lemon to prevent erosion. I just got in the habit of using a straw most of the time.

Water is the only liquid that really quenches my thirst. Never developed the taste for soda, tea, or other types of refreshment. Water is what our bodies need, and for me, what I crave when I am thirsty. First thing in the morning, I do have a cup of coffee, but not because I’m thirsty. 😉

Not only is lime or lemon in your water tasty; but, have you tried pineapple? It is on speacial everywhere right now and it is very good in your water!
Instead of ice in your lemonade or water, add frozen berries.

I also find that having a straw makes me drink more. When I’m at my desk at work I always have a waterbottle sitting next to me with a straw. I generally finish the 24 oz bottle within a half our or so and then refill it a few times throughout the day.

I always take water with me in the car as I driver to work. I have a 13 mile commute and can drink 24 oz. easy in that time frame. And, I fill my water cup just before I head home each afternoon and another 24 oz. down the hatch. It has become a habit with drinking water in my car.

Wow, if I did that, I’d have to stop twice for the bathroom! I have a 35-mile commute (each way) and one time I decided to bring tea in the car. That was the worst drive of my life, and I thought I wasn’t going to make it to work! It takes me hours to drink water from my 26 oz water bottle at work and I still usually don’t finish it before leaving!
Kristin says
Straw is the way to go! I have one of those Aladdin plastic to-go cups, with the straw that can’t fall out. I drink a full glass as soon as I wake up and keep it filled throughout the day!

I think you can count your tea consumption toward your water consumption, as it is, after all, mainly water! Also, you don’t need to go by the eight 8oz glasses of water a day guideline. Now they say you should drink about half your weight in ounces. So if you weigh 120 lbs, you should drink 60 oz. If you weigh 200 lbs, you should drink 100 oz However, if you are more active or working out (or live in a hot or dry climate), you should drink more.
The Mayo Clinic’s website also says this: Everyone has heard the advice, “Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.” That’s about 1.9 liters, which isn’t that different from the Institute of Medicine recommendations. Although the “8 by 8” rule isn’t supported by hard evidence, it remains popular because it’s easy to remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be reframed as: “Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day,” because all fluids count toward the daily total.
I do not get enough fluids but on the days I am able to drink more water than usual at work, I’m in the bathroom every hour (or more) and I can’t stand it, so I’d rather border on not drinking enough.

I steep a large piece of ginger root in a big pot of water for 15-20 minutes, lot it cool, and refrigerate. I LOVE this concoction!
