My goals for 2017
Get 7- 8 Hours of Sleep Each Night
Thank you for all your kind words and wondering where the heck I was yesterday. I wish I had some super exciting story like I was in Tahiti laying on the beach or something and I couldn’t get wifi but alas, I was sick in bed with a fever, the shakes, intense nausea and begging to be put out of my misery. I was dehydrated and sweaty and wanting for a catheter because the thought of having to move pick my feet up and shuffle more than 3 steps to the bathroom was just to unbearable.
I don’t know if I caught cooties on the plane ride to Boston, or if my body finally broke down and decided to infect itself with the bug the HH has had the last few weeks but HOLY COW MAN, being sick, like really sick, is just the worst.
And while I am feeling a little better today, I’m only at about 50% so I think after I write this post I’m going to head back to bed and stay there for the rest of the day.
Life. It has a way of making you slow down whether you want to or not.
Make Saving a Priority, Not an Idea
We decided to stop making extra payments on our house and to start saying for the next big thing. 😉 In the 3 years and 2 months that we’ve lived here we have been able to pay down our mortgage by an extra 15 years and 5 months!!! Seriously. How crazy is that?
Live a little
Chick- Fil-A … have you tried it? I feel like I’m the last person on the planet to have tried it. The sauce? Flipin’ fantastic. Who knew fast food could taste so good?
Visit 52 REAL Bakeries
Mom and I have found another bakery {this one’s up in Ballard} that we want to try. Hopefully we’ll get to it by the end of the year.
Have 1 “no spend” week each month
So far I am 10 for 11 for the year.
Start a Line of Rug Hooking Patterns {Mission Accomplished}
Any hookers out there? I’ve got 13 of my patterns listed on Etsy and I have been busy working on a few more which I hope to be able to offer in early January {maybe even sooner}. The one pictured above is HUGE and probably not the most travel friendly project but I am really excited about it. I stepped out of my comfort zone a wee bit and used some brighter colors and I think it’s going to turn out MARVELOUS!
Turn My Wool Stash into $2,500. {Mission Accomplished}
This week I sold $403.99 worth of goodness in my Etsy shop which brings my total sales to $12,624.75 for the year. I am still in awe of this amount. People tell you all the time to do what you love, and the money will follow. But seriously, how many people ever buy into that and just go for it? When you love what you do, it doesn’t even feel like work. And I wish we could all find something like that.
Purge 250 Items {Mission Accomplished}
Over 400+ items so far this year!
Learn to Crochet {Mission Accomplished}
I tried to love it but it’s not for me. I’m a hooker at heart.
Dote on My Husband Even More Than I Do Now.
Seriously. Not only does my husband carry our luggage by it’s handles, but backpacks too. I’d like to tell you that after all these years I am past the awkwardness of it all, but I’m not. It makes me crazy. And unless you have a husband who does this kind of stuff, you probably have no idea what I am even throwing myself on the floor with embarrassment about.
Lose the Muffin Top. {again}
Being sick has it’s perks. I bet I’ve lost 5 pounds in the last 48 hours from sweat and dehydration alone.
Wear out {most of} the clothing I already own.
Workin’ it!
Try 52 New Recipes
I don’t even remember if I tried anything new last week, but I do have several pies that I want to try out.
I am still working my way through This I Believe on Hoopla. It’s not the typical audiobook I’d listen to but I like it.

Mavis,
How the heck can you get that rug hooking tool on a plane????
It’s cracking me up! My son has food allergies and we have to bring his food everywhere. Resulting in an extra thorough pat down from security for my husband when we dared to bring yogurt (in it’s original sealed container)! They consider it a liquid… I feel like you could do more damage with that tool than a pair of nail clippers, just sayin’.
Mavis Butterfield says
I know right? I think it’s because it must be under 3″.
Jill Korendyke says
Hope you feel better soon.
Teri says
No fun being sick. Hope you feel much better.
Paula says
It sounds like the flu! My husband got the flu last month on a flight. Take care!
Jenny says
You’re embarrassed when your husband carries YOUR luggage/backpack by the handles? If my husband carried my luggage, I’d be grateful and wouldn’t be embarrassed even if he carried it strapped to his back! You’ve definitely got a keeper!
Hope you feel better soon!
Stacie says
Being sick is for the birds! Hope you recover soon. I cannot wait to hear about you last two secret goals…something tells me though it has to do with the east coast!
Julie P says
You were missed, hope you feel better soon

Hi Mavis. I am sorry you were so sick, but glad you are feeling better. I really enjoy reading your blog and noticed in your giving back to 12 organizations this year that October still needs to be filled. I just thought I would throw a suggestion out there. There is an organization called Camp Korey, which is a camp in Mt. Vernon for kids with medical issues of all kinds, that is amazing. Kids with medical needs that may not be able to go to traditional summer camp (my daughter included) get to have the time of their lives for 5 days and it is of no cost to the families whatsoever. Anyway, just throwin it out there. Hope the rest of your trip goes better.

Feel better soon!
I was so stoked when I saw a Chick-fil-A close to where I grocery shop. I finally talked my husband into going with me. Definitely a disappointment. The chicken wasn’t really that good, and the sauce–the smell alone was enough to gag me–thank goodness they don’t put it on the sandwich!
Carrie says
I’m from NC and Chickfila is the only fast food I will eat. You can get a kids meal (6 nuggets, fries, small drink and a small ice cream) for under $4! They sell $7 calendars in December that have coupons for free items to use every month. Last month was 3 chicken strips and this month is a free sandwich. Also if you use their app to order you get free items! I’m not a fan on the chickfila sauce but I do like their honey bbq sauce. Their biscuits are good too!
Jennifer says
I honestly didn’t realize that CFA was all the way out there!! I’m originally from SC, in NC now, but have been eating at CFA for over 30 years!! I love the chicken sandwiches AND the biscuits. I LOVE their hash rounds, but do not like waffle fries that much. When they had slaw, I would eat slaw on my fries
KC says
Aw, sorry you’ve been sick. That is no fun at all! Next time you get the choice between a stomach bug and a trip to Tahiti, I strongly endorse the trip to Tahiti. 😉
Rehydration (fluids with electrolytes, low/no caffeine, low/no alcohol), rest, getting potassium levels back up (potatoes, bananas, and mushrooms), and keeping foods easy to digest (low-spice/low-fat/low-fiber) for a few days are my four not-so-secret weapons for faster recovery from stomach bugs. Hope you heal well!
Tracy says
I’ve never tried it, but have heard Chick-fil-a is good, as well. However, after the very public and confirmed remarks from their executive management about the company’s homophobic position on many issues, I won’t be trying it anytime soon. I’m straight, but want equality for everyone, not just straights. So yeah…there’s that.
Torry says
Tracy, thank you for saying what I was going to post. I wanted to try it and then the —- hit the fan! 6 years ago, we were at a military reunion in Washington, D.C. and some of my husband’s friends wanted to go eat there. I explained that they could go, but I wouldn’t eat there and why. We all ate somewhere else.
My military time was way before they came out with “don’t ask, don’t tell;” however, I knew some people who were the salt of the earth and for anyone to disrespect them…it sticks in my craw!
Marcia says
being sick is the WORST. I hope you feel better soon. Miraculously, my entire family has been healthy so far, and I’ve got 2 kids in elementary school. Two years ago the winter was BRUTAL. Ugh. Four rounds of stomach flu.
tia in boise says
I’m a weirdo. I actually like being sick. How else you an you truly appreciate being well if you haven’t been sick recently? Okay, I don’t really like being sick, but it’s a good reminder to appreciate the norm.
lynne says
Hope you are feeling better tomorrow!
Do you have a tool that cuts all your wool into those thin strips? I love the organized colored baskets of wools….that would be a décor item all in itself :-). LynneinWI
Mavis Butterfield says
There is an official wool cutter machine but it runs about $400 an only cuts 2 wool strips at a time so instead I use a rotary cutter and mat.
Nancy D says
Please feel better soon! Hope you have access to a snuggle puggle! ❤️

One of my goals this year was to have a simple Christmas, with less toys and more meaningful gifts. I had a great idea that I would make a “my favorite things” box for each of my kids and fill it with things they love but rarely get. So far I have added things like microwave popcorn(we usually air pop), 4 jars of Nutella(which I got on sale for 49cents!) and scored a free Venus razor with a coupon I received in the mail(we usually use disposable ones that I get free with coupons). I really think my kids will love this idea and the best part is….it’s soooo cheap and fun to fill:)
Brian Johnson says
Mavis I’m glad you’re feeling better. We love Chick Fil A here in Pensacola, FL. The location near our house knows us by name and treats us tremendously well (I can’t say that for all of the locations in town).
I am working on cloning a recipe for CFA sauce, once I get it down I’ll share. Honey mustard and Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce are a good start.
If you can, swipe some of their Jalapeno salsa (They serve it with the breakfast burrito so you have to ask for it at the counter). I have a stash at home and put it on my eggs and omelettes – so addicting!
Continue to get better!

When I see people carrying bags this way, I always think of how strong they must be!
Helen in Meridian says
I love love love the chicken at CFA, About every 3 months they have free chicken biscuits on Tuesday mornings and sometimes for sandwiches on Thurs nights on some months. I try to eat there at those times. I love their cross cut fries too, but ask them to be extra crispy. There is something in their chicken marinade that tastes like pickle juice that makes it so delicious. They have a calendar for sale with a free item each month.
Helen in Meridian says
Oh, their lemonade is fabulous too.

I hope you’re feeling 100% soon. Aside – when you’re sick, does Lucy park herself in just the wrong place for your comfort? I’m continually having to move the dog when I’m sick, because my legs get restless and have to move, or I have to roll over (and over and over), or just adjust the covers. Love the warmth, could do without the weight on my legs, dog!
I won’t go to Chick Fil A because of their (huge) support of anti-LGBTQ groups. Never, ever.
