My goals for 2017
Get 7- 8 Hours of Sleep Each Night
What a weird week! There was pretty much a 36 hour period where I didn’t get any sleep, then I slept too much, and then yesterday my eyes and head hurt so much that I just walked around in circles all day. But hey, tomorrow is the start of a new week and now that all the things that were effecting my sleep are pretty much out of the way, I am looking forward to a restful week. Life, you just gotta go with the flow sometimes.
Make Saving a Priority, Not an Idea
Another week and another flight. And a whole row to myself to boot! Luckily this time around I was able to cash in some frequent flyer miles and one leg of my journey was free. I LOVE when that happens!
Live a little
Gardening is kind of a funny thing. From March to October it’s all hands on deck…. but then winter rolls around and it’s like “Oh look, all my strawberry plants are dying back. Oh well.” There’s no nursing them along, no urgent need to run out and pick away the dead leaves, nothing. Just oh well. I’ll deal with it in the spring.
I think the biggest thing I’m looking forward to when I break out of suburbia someday and move to the east coast is winter. And the forced stillness of it all.
Visit 52 REAL Bakeries
I meet up with my parents last week and Mom and I were supposed to check out a new bakery in Ballard but time sort of got away from us and we didn’t make it out there. 🙁 So far we’ve made it to a whopping 30 bakeries!!!! I was of course hoping to hit 52 bakeries this year but clearly, I won’t be able to get to 22 over the next 14 days so I’m thinking I will continue working on this goal in 2018.
Have 1 “no spend” week each month
I’m thinking it will be the week after Christmas.
Start a Line of Rug Hooking Patterns Mission Accomplished
Any hookers out there? I’ve got 13 of my patterns listed on Etsy and Lucy and I have been working on a few more which I hope to be able to offer in early January.
Turn My Wool Stash into $2,500 Mission Accomplished
This week I sold $332.85 worth of goodness in my Etsy shop which brings my total sales to $13,147.45 for the year. Sweet Diggety!
Purge 250 Items Mission Accomplished
I stopped counting after I hit to 400 item mark but this past week I came up with another 7 items I no longer need/want. 5 of which my mother claimed.
Learn to Crochet Mission Accomplished
I tried to love it but it’s not for me. I’m a hooker at heart.
Dote on My Husband Even More Than I Do Now.
Breakfast in bed this morning will include fried potatoes, sausage, eggs and an English muffin. Life is good!
Lose the Muffin Top Mission Accomplished
For the first time in like 10 years…. Muffy has not made her annual holiday appearance. SHOCKING, I know. Maybe I have this whole sweet treats portion thing finally under control. That, or I’ve upped my water and tea intake this year and there just isn’t anymore room left for insane amounts of sweets.
Wear out {most of} the clothing I already own.
If wearing pink corduroys and brown turtlenecks isn’t good enough proof that I’m trying to wear out all my clothing before buying something new…. I don’t know what is.
Try 52 New Recipes
Mrs. HB and I are getting together next week to make food. I’m seriously hoping to put together a couple of meatloaves and to try out a new pie recipe.
Read 52 Books
I am currently listening to How Not to Run and B&B on Hoopla and so far it’s pretty funny.

At the beginning of the year I posted here that I was starting a Master’s program and hoped to stick with it. This past Wednesday my last grade posted and I finished a two year degree in one year. I DID IT!!

Also, hate to break it to you, but there is no forced stillness in winter. Instead of caring for a yard and gardening, there is shoveling and plowing. Everything that needs to be done when it is 50 degrees still needs to be done when it is below zero. Since your kids are grown, it might not be so hard to hunker down here and there, but just because it is cold doesn’t mean life stops. You just get to be cold all.the.time.

Hahaha. This. Granted, I live in northern Idaho so definitely not the East Coast but winters are… fun. Let’s see, yesterday I snow-shoveled the driveway as well as the walks to all the livestock areas. We got five inches so it only took 1.5 hours. Then there was the changing of the water buckets for the livestock, it’s cold enough that the water keeps freezing over and has to be changed or broken every 6-8 hours. The dogs spend most of their days inside but do get to romp outside in the “heat” of the day for an hour or so. In the evening all the animals have to be checked for general health. It’s cold enough that any problems can go tragic very quickly. Of course they also need feeding, fresh bedding, etc. Fortunately, we’re still in the positives at night. Winter nights can go down to -20ºF up here.
The garden was mulched with straw back in October so it is pretty much on hold. The last dig for jerusalem artichokes and carrots was in November, after which the ground froze completely solid, so looks like we’ll be having the rest come Spring. Frost cloth, remember to put out frost cloth over everything you are trying to overwinter or work earlier in the Spring than normal.
All the mending. Dog winter coats need to be mended (they use them hard), halters and harnesses, etc, etc. Spring is the crush to get everything in the ground, Summer is the rush to weed and water and try not to fry with the wildfires, Autumn is the harvesting and preserving… Winter is the mending. Tools need to be checked and in tip top shape. Fences need repairs from trees falling in storms or from snow load. All that has to be dealt with while the fencing is slick with ice and the tools too cold to even think about touching bare handed.
I wouldn’t trade it for anything though. And you are correct Mavis, the garden does sleep during the winter.

Ahhh…yes, but if we know Mavis (like we all like to think we do), we know her optimistic outlook on life will keep her spirits high! The extra outdoor work will keep “muffy” away! And her frequent flyer miles will keep her friends/family only a flight away with new adventures to share! And of course, if things don’t work out (which I’m certain they will- remember she’s alredy had a test run) she can always “sell the farm, draw the horses and head west!”
Nothing ventured-nothing gained!!!

Ah I don’t even remember what my goals for the year were! I’ll have to look. I def accomplished a lot. I ran two half marathons, the second one all up hill, 4000 ft elevation gain. To be honest, that second one I mostly walked it because it was also 95F.
All this crazy year was thrown into complete turmoil in December. As the year went by, I thought it couldn’t get worse. Then December said “hold my beer”. Our county had been burning for two weeks. Now the third largest fire in CA history.
We’ve evacuated twice now due to smoke and fast moving fire. Even though we aren’t in an evac zone it’s scary. The school district cancelled the last 7 days of school before the two week break. We are lucky that we can afford to get up and drive a couple of hours and get a hotel.
But we are on our third hotel (nicest one yet). I’m tired of eating in hotels. And my five year old started throwing up when we got here. Headed home today, even though only 45% contained.
So for October, you could donate to an emergency services type of thing. Direct relief international has been great. The over 8000 firefighters fighting this fire are my personal heroes.
Or maybe an animal services group? We’ve had many down here rescuing and caring for rescued pets.
