One of the great things about living in the Pacific Northwest is the abundance of {free} natural landscape materials.  Although we live in suburbia, our property sits on a heavily wooded lot.  Living amongst the pine trees does have its downfalls, shade and berry stealing chipmunks to name a few. However living in the woods has also been a blessing.  Our kids have grown up climbing trees in their own backyard, building forts and have grown accustomed to deer, rabbits and even a family of black bears roaming through our neighborhood at any given time of the year.  I can’t imagine living anywhere else other than the Pacific Northwest.

Especially if you are a flower gardener.

Moss.  If you like to plant flower baskets, moss is plentiful here.

While clearing brush in the backyard yesterday I kept coming across patches of moss so I decided to put together a flower basket.

I decided on a budget of $10. I already had the basket, soil and all the free moss I could possibly want so I headed over to a local nursery to get the rest of my supplies.

1 Cyclamen plant with variegated leaves, 3 white pansies and 4 daffodil bulbs.

All for $9.99!

I simply lined the bottom of the basket with soil…

Carefully pulled the potted plants from their containers…

Stuffed the flowers into the basket…

Gathered a little more moss…

Tucked the additional moss around the flowers…

And… Viola! 

1 flower basket filled with spring flowers.  All for less than most people pay for lunch.  I think it turned out beautiful if I do say so myself.  What do you think?
