Yesterday it rained, and then it hailed, and then it rained some more. So I stayed inside, read emails* and baked all day instead of working in the garden like I had planned. If Mother Nature does not deliver a roasting hot summer this year to make up for our chilly, rainy, and unpredictable late winter weather, I think Mr. H and I will have to break out the sling shots and start launching rocks towards her home in the sky very, very soon.
I want to get this show on the road. I want to grow food. But first we need some heat. I am so incredibly ready to get this garden going and to try to grow 2,000 lbs of fruits and vegetables in my backyard. I’m ready to start waking up at 4am to drink a few cups of tea before heading out to water the garden before the sun rises. I want to hear the birds chirping, and frogs croaking and to get a little dirt under my nails. I want to turn my phone off and just breath. I see a lot of work ahead of me and I’m excited. Excited to be back doing what I love. Planting a seed and seeing a result. Fruition = Bliss.
But first, I have to secure the homestead. Buff the Wayward Chicken and friends escaped their chicken run a few days ago and ate all my onion starts. Luckily they didn’t find the leeks. To say I wasn’t very happy about shelling out $10 for 500 new onion starts would be an understatement.
Not to mention the whole process of replanting 500 onions {I bought a little extra this time to be on the safe side}. If you have never had to replant anything before because you don’t have chickens, then consider yourself lucky.
Peace Out Girl Scouts,
I’m off to play in the dirt today.
♥ Mavis

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been blocked over there. I just read the “Ode To Mavis” post there and responded — and then I tried to post onehundreddollarsamonth dot com for those looking for you, but that somehow didn’t get posted. 🙁
I think most people read multiple blogs every day, so I don’t know why they would worry about pointing people in your direction. That is sad to me. Even though you were always my favorite over there I will still go there for information AND now come here to read your personal stories. I just wish I knew about your blog much, much earlier!
Thank you for all you do.
Mavis says
Thanks Mary Ann. I’m glad you were able to find me. 🙂
Mary Ann says
Me, too, Mavis.
They’ve now taken down my post in which I complemented you and mentioned I would be reading your blog (but didn’t give the name – that was another post that never GOT posted).
I may change my mind about continuing to visit that blog. How they’re handling this is unnecessary.
Susan says
So much deleting and censorship going on over there!
Unbelievable and childish 🙁
Mavis says
I’m sorry to hear that Mary, but I’m glad you found me. 🙂
Kim says
Mavis – you’re awesome! I just found you this morning and am SO happy to be able to read your posts again! It’s funny that it’s only been two days, but the thought of not reading your posts was so sad! I’m sure you will be getting a flood of new followers here and I am glad to be one of them. I appreciate your sense of humor and expertise! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us!
Mavis says
Hi Kim, I’m glad you found me. 🙂
Katie says
I am SO sad you arn’t on fabulesslyfrugal anymore….you quickly became my favorite part about that site. It seems so wrong they put up an Ode to Mavis post saying how sad they are to lose you but block your comments and don’t want any of us to find you. But one thing about couponers…we are resourceful! Lots of people will find you even if they won’t post your site…I did 🙂 Excited to follow your blog!
Mavis says
I agree, couponers are very resourceful. 🙂
Heather S. says
I only followed them to follow you in case you posted something there that you didn’t post here. So many people are asking where to find you, but they won’t post any comments that people put in with your new site… I even saw in their chat thing where it changes the name of your site if someone tries to type it in (who knew they could do that?). One person got creative and posted it one word at a time to try to get it to people. I know you said that you can’t read the comments so I wanted to tell you that everyone is posting how sad they are to see you go, how much they were looking forward to hearing about gardening tips, how they looked forward to your Mondays with Mavis posts, how inspiring you were, and how they appreciated you making couponing (hmm, that doesn’t appear to be an actual word) more fun. I’m so glad I can read you here and I hope you don’t get discouraged and stop writing. You are my favorite blog so thank you for taking the time to post and thank you for making me smile!!!
Alisha says
I am so glad I was able to catch the one word comments quickly to find your blog here! Although I do like the FF website, I think it’s extremely unprofessional how they are acting about all of this. I mean, really, deleting anything having to do with your website?? Anyways, I am going to miss you on there. You added many smiles and laughs to my days reading your posts 🙂 I’m glad I could find you on here so I can keep following you 🙂
Mavis says
Thanks Alisha, welcome! I’m glad you were able to find me.

I stayed up till 11pm (waiting for bread to bake) and read all of your chicken posts! I am so glad I found you (again!) & will make sure to have my little sis (12 years old) read your posts as she is in charge of the chickens at my parents . 🙂 Mavis, I just have to say you are my Folgers!!!
Mavis says
Ha Ha that’s funny. Homemade bread. Yum! I need to make some. 🙂
Kayla says
So glad I was able to find your blog, Mavis. 🙂 You’re my frugal living hero.
Kathy says
I think they took the whole thing off their site now. Can’t find the Ode to Mavis at all now!
Pretty sad…we do follow more than one coupon site…this is just one more great site we can all visit. Makes me NOT want to go to FF if this is how they are going to be.
Mavis, I don’t know what happened over there or why they are being like this but you did bring a lot of people to their site, there is just no need for all of this….
Best of Luck!!!
Mary Ann says
It’s still there. It’s on the second page now.
JenniferM says
HA! Glad I found you! I was not about to miss your gardening posts! You have inspired me to try to grow 500 pounds for my family this year and I want to be around when you reach your 2000 lb goal. Rock on Mavis. I will miss you on the other site but will be saving you to my favorites!
LaToya says
Yay! The girls are coming over. I was banned from the site – LOL! I can’t post at all either in the comments or on the side chatbar. It says YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED. Wow. For referring people here. Oh well, true colors. Whatever. So yeah. Farming, let’s get it on!
Kathy says
I only knew about this site because of you, you writing it out word by word, right before they took it down so, thanks!!!!
Desi says
LaToya, I think they will be sad they did that. I read your comments on FF all the time! I wonder if I’ve been banned yet? I’d better go check!
Linda says
Mavis, LOVE LOVE this site!! Cluck on girl scout!!
LaToya, Wow! They banned you also!
Mavis says
Cluck on!
Brandy says
Hi Mavis….I love your blog! I hope your site is ready to handle all the additional traffic you will be getting. 🙂
Mike says
It’s been snowing here all morning…rain, snow, rain, snow = Bleck! I agree with you, lets add another band to those sling shots and get some more favorable action from Mother Nature. Mrs. H and I are loving your gardening posts…YOU are a rockstar! Keep an eye on those chickens of your’s, sounds like they are trouble makers.:)
Mavis says
Thanks Mr. H. I look forward to more of your garden posts this year as are YOU ARE THE ROCKSTAR! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Amber says
I love you Mavieroo. That’s all.
Mavis says
I love you too Amberlina! 🙂
Helen in Meridian says
I love you both and don’t understand why they deleted my 3 posts with directions to you. They give out lots of other blogs and acknowledge them, but not My Dear Mavis. PS I was State VP of Girl Scouts in Idaho. Were you a Scout too….Rock On Girl Scouts.
Mavis says
Of course you were Helen. All the cool people were scouts when they were younger. 🙂

I “found” this site late last week when I read a comment you had listed on another site (CCNW?) and there was a link that brought me here. I was thrilled! I’ve been following you on Fab Frug. for at least the last year. I have thought many times…How does she do it all? Then when I saw this second blog you’re posting to, I really thought, Wow…you must be over the top. When I read earlier this week that you were leaving Fab Frug. I was relieved for you. I don’t know what the circumstaces were but now perhaps you won’t be quite so stretched. I’ve stayed up way too late the last several days reading pages and pages of posts on this site and your previous blogspot site. I’ve enjoyed all of it.
I’ve decided not to leave a comment on Ode to Mavis but here so that you are sure to get it.
I am inspired by your energy and enthusiasm. You accomplish so much and do it so well. You have great endurance and see your goals all the way through. I love seeing all of the things you’ve been cooking, projects in your garden, and awesome shopping trips. You’ve inspired me to cook/preserve more and keep up with my garden. I’ve had the coupon/rebate bug for over 20 years since high school. I used to keep my “stash” under my bed in college. 🙂 I appreciate all your research and help with couponing. I’m doing a little more dumpster diving too…yesterday I searched through four of them. Your sense of humor, be it your comments or your outfits make your postings so fun to read. I told my husband that you refer to yours as The Handsome Husband. He liked that and thinks I should do the same. I’m curious why your son is Monkey Boy and daughter is The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird. What’s the background?
Mavis I feel like you are a celebrity. I saw you at a Cross Country meet last fall. I instantly knew it was you. Not one of those moments when you think to yourself…Hmmm…where do I know them from? I didn’t stop to talk because first…Uh…how do you approach a celebrity? You don’t know me…you’ll think I’m a stalker and you were tending to I think an injured/hurting daughter. Not an appropriate time. However, first thing I told my daughter (runner) was, “Guess who I just saw?…Mavis!” I feel like I have this one-sided friendship with you. Anyway “friend”….thanks for all the inspiration, suggestions, and motivation that you give to me. Carry on!
Mavis says
Dear Stalker, thank you for not coming up to me while I was tending to a runner. If it was the race I think it was then I was helping a girl who thought she was going to pass out get back to her tent.
Thanks for all your kind words and I don’t think you are a stalker lol. If you see me again come up and say hi. I’m really good with awkward situations. 🙂 I’m glad you use coupons and garden as well because saving money rocks.
Angela says
Wow, such drama in the couponing world! Kind of turns me off to that sight, but anyways…
As far as gardening goes, we’ve had so much rain in the state south of yours that we haven’t even been able to prep the soil. It’s like a huge mud pit… 🙁 I’m already dreaming of tomatoes and green beans and corn. I’ve already run out of everything that I canned or froze so I realize that I need probably double what I did last year. Please sun, we need you!!! 😉
Angela says
*site* not *sight* – is it bedtime yet?
Mavis says
I agree, bring on the sun!
Jim says
Hey Mavis,
As everyone has stated you are truly inspirational, as a fellow blogger, I must say I love your style of blogging. I personally believe that if you just be yourself your readership will flourish, just give it time. I didn’t read FF for the deals, especially since most of them weren’t even local to me… I have at least 50 more sites in my RSS reader to do that, it was all about you and how you connected with me on a personal level.
Just keep being you!
–JIM
Mavis says
Thanks Jim. 🙂

Woohoo, I was so happy to find my Mavis fix! I’ve learned so much from you over the past year, and can’t wait to keep on reading about your adventures in bartering, growing your own food, etc.
Mavis says
I’m glad you were able to find me. 🙂 Have a great Easter!

I have spent hours going through your blog today and you have made me laugh so many times. I must say I really missed reading Monday with Mavis. Now I don’t have to miss a thing–Love your blog. Just so you know your followers come in all age groups. I am a grammy and your humor was the highlight of my day. Will be fallowing you daily.

Thanks Debbie, I’m glad you are here. 🙂
