Here we are, the end of April and the backyard garden plot is finally starting to take shape. Just a few more weeks to go until I can plant my tomato starts and really start to see some progress from above.
The recent cold weather has done wonders for the peas, broccoli and cabbage plants. The herb garden is coming alive too.
Yesterday, I transplanted my tomato seedlings to larger pots and lined the greenhouse walls with them. Hopefully by the time they are ready to be transplanted they will have established a nice root ball and will be easy to remove from the free pots I scored last week.
Not much is going on at the future heirloom pumpkin patch. It’s too chilly to plant pumpkins so for now it sits empty.
The raspberry canes are starting to leaf out. It looks like I still have quite a bit of dead raspberry canes to prune, but sometimes it’s hard to tell if a cane is dead or not so I think I’ll wait just a little longer to see if there is any new growth.
The potato towers I built are looking great, and so are the new rhubarb plants.
And lets not forget about the flowers. The hillside of periwinkle is in full bloom and looks divine.

Radish. Once it is ready to be harvested I think I’ll plant some more. 🙂 Tomatoes will be going in the inside of the windowpane.

I saw some tomato plants at Walgreens today $2.99 each. heirloom variety, really big and already flowering. I was afraid to buy one just incase it is too early to plant outside. I’d most likely kill it inside. How do you know when its okay to plant outside? I live in Portland so our weather is similar to Seattle.
I was really surprised at the variety of veggie plants at Wags. Peppers, tomatoes, peas, squash, etc.

In So Cal. My small garden has 6 tomatoes, 2 cherry tomatoes, 8 cucumbers, 2 bell peppers, and a row of green beans. No extra room, unfortunately. But the tomatoes are now flowering and it’s time to start tying up the cucumbers, so things are coming along nicely.
I’m SO envious of your gorgeous, large gardening space, though!!! I’m also envious of your unending energy to be able to tend to it all!!!

Everything looks great. All those hours you have been putting in are really going to start to pay off soon. My garden is humming along. I pulled out the fall peas and am waiting for the new batch to start to flower. My tomatos are planted. Been enjoying swiss chard, kale, lettuce mixes, carrots. We’ve been in the 80’s so everything thinks it is summer already. I love the pic of your green house full of your upcoming harvest.

Just curious where you get the compost food…in the dumpster behind a grocery store I’m guessing. Do you need to have permission to do something like that and do you check daily or just certain days. Thanks so much!

No, I don’t get it around back behind a grocery store. All I did was walk in and talk the the produce person and ask if they gave away free scraps. I told them about my chickens. All the food I brought home was going to be throw out.

I am sitting up here in the Boise Valley with my strawberry starts plodding right along in my new raised bed that my Handsome Husband built, then in my garden the peas, spinach, pumpkin and the winter and summer squash are just cute little plants! I am ready to move my broccoli starts outside, but I am going to be VERY protective of my peppers and tomato starts! I have no plans of destroying the last 2 months of starting them from seed in a possible frost. Still no sign of the corn or potatoes, however the potatoes are past the germination period. I will give them another week before checking them out underground. I just hope I get the rest of my garden in before my #3 is born (due May 13th). Mavis, you were the 3rd person to find out I was pregnant. Just me and my husband knew before I told you at a coupon lesson in Boise. Crazy how time flies!

I was just at Epcot and went through greenhouse garden on one of the boat rides.
They had many veggies vines tied up including cucumbers. It was fascinating even though I’m not a gardener. I especially loved their pumpkin vine tie up where the pumpkin grew in a “hammock” overhead.

I’m along the Illinois/Wisconsin border, well established in Zone 4. I’m rarin’ to go but still need to take a tiller to my garden beds and some other parts of the yard. If things go right, that’ll happen in the next week or so.
We’ve had frost warnings every couple of days for the last month, so most of what I want to plant has not gotten put in the ground yet. However, I can tell you that I’ve got seed potatoes that are just ripe to be put into potato towers like yours.
@Patti M. you’re talking about The Land in EPCOT. That has to be my absolutely FAVORITE attraction in the whole of Walt Disney World. I would really love to take the “back lot” tour of that area and talk with the gardeners there. Did you see the Mickey Mouse shapes that they put around pumpkins? They end up growing into the Mouse icon!
