So far this year I have spent a whopping $484.46 on seeds, soil, Tagro, and garden tools. My original goal was to keep my expenses under $600 and to try to earn back my “seed money” via selling extra vegetables at the end of our driveway.
But giving away my beloved vegetables and donating them has been really fun too, and even though in a way it is costing me money, I’m not going to stop doing it. So hopefully, somehow, I’ll be able to find a happy medium and still be able to recoup my expenses.
On one recent afternoon the kids set up shop. The picture you see above is what was left over at the end of the afternoon right before they hauled everything back in.
Rather than offering bunches of vegetables for a higher price, the kids decided to price the vegetables at $1/5 items. I’m not really sure what their logic was, but it seems to be working.
So far, they have collected $23, which I think is pretty good considering the selection is minimal right now. But hopefully, as the season progresses, we will be able to re-coup a little more money.
And if not, who cares, gardening is still about the coolest hobby out there.
Peace Out Girl Scouts, I’m off to cause some trouble.

OK so two thoughts:
1–The veggies are absolutely gorgeous!
2–Not everyone who follows you is a girl scout :).

I really have nothing close to a green thumb — most of my gardening experiments have turned out horribly, but that is, admittedly, because our schedules just got away with us and the garden was usually the last thing on my mind until I’d remember at odd moments (like during bouts of insomnia!)…So — I am SOOOOO appreciative of gardeners who do set out their extras! My husband does heating and air conditioning and is often traveling from service call to service call in obscure little places. Last year he picked up three huge boxes of tomatoes, one for $2 and two for $3…So for the cost of $8 I was able to make salsa, ketchup and homemade tomato sauce! It is a blessing to me to find little stands all over that offer what I could not otherwise (yet!!!! I’m still hoping!) provide for us myself! Between the stands and the local farmers’ markets (there are tons here where I live, including the oldest continuous operating farmers’ market http://www.centralmarketlancaster.com/) I am blessed to feed my family at least a lot better than what the grocery stores provide, and usually at least a bit cheaper!

That’s awesome! I’m really need to find somewhere that sells carrots in all of those colors – I think it would be great for the kids to see. Do the different colors taste different?

Can you sell in your neighborhood without violating the association rules? I have always wanted to do this, but thought I had to jump through many hoops to get approval. Tips?

Is there a law against offering vegetables at the end of your driveway? Seriously? I can’t imagine my neighbors would care. They might freak out if I did it everyday or there were hoards of cars coming through though.

To quote Mr. Rogers:
Please,…won’t you be my neighbor?
My un-green thumb would be dealing out $1 bills like a blackjack dealer!
Happy harvesting! And thanks for a great blog!
