Yesterday I headed to the Home Depot for a new hose nozzle. That’s it. All I needed was one thing. But do you think I left with one thing? No, of course not.
While I was there, I made a big mistake and veered over to the plant section. I’ll just take a look, I told myself. Well it wasn’t long before I found a huge table full of potted sweet potato vines. And before you know it I had laid down $25 bucks to replace the spent flowers currently growing in the flower pot that sits in front of our garage.
The flowers I had grown from seed earlier this spring had run their course, and it was time to freshen up the pot. Plus the Handsome Husband had mentioned the other day the flowers looked like crap, so see, I had to buy new flowers {that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it}.
What is it with woman who live in suburbia and there flower pots anyway? It’s like flower pots are their show piece, a conversation starter if you will.
Men have their lawns to brag about, and women have their flower pots.
It’s weird, but true.
Yes darling… I planted this seasons pot with and sweet potato vines, coleus, fountain grass and dusty miller, doesn’t it look divine?
So there you have it. I am a victim of my environment, and I am keeping up with the Jones’ via my flower pot.

P.S. I want it known that I typically don’t buy many annuals. I prefer perennials, for obvious reasons.

Pretty! I just dumped my flowerpot because it looked way worse than yours. It was just flowers and there were like 2 blossoms left. Maybe I’ll go find some fall plants to put in it 🙂

Next time your petunias get leggy just trim them back. They will put on new growth and more flowers.
Mavis says
How far should I trim them back Tanya? I love growing petunias.

Don’t know if u have frosts where u live, but if u do, the coleus will turn to mush. They are warm weather plants. But it looks great. Would love to hear how u get on growing sweet potatoes. We call them kumara here and they down grow in my area because of frosts and they need a long sunny growing season here.

Yes–how DO you cut back a petunia?–didn’t know it was possible!!

You should try taking cuttings of your plants. I bet you could overwinter them in that fab greenhouse you have.

Mavis, your planter looks so good! So here is a question from a novice – how do you fit all these plants inside one pot? I tried to put one planter together earlier this summer but the ‘outside’ plants died (yes, I watered them so that was not it). I think it’s because they didn’t have enough room for the roots to get the nutrients from the soil. How can you estimate how many plants will fit inside the planter? Maybe I crammed too many. I see yours is pretty full too. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks
Mavis says
It may not look like it but it’s actually quite a large planter. When I plant my flowers I make sure there is plenty of good, well watered potting soil in the pot. I typically break up the plants root ball a bit to give the roots a little breathing room and then just stuff everything in the pot, give it some more water and let it do it’s thing. All I do after that is try and keep the plants well watered.
So although I do cram a lot of plants in there, there is plenty of room below for the roots to grow. How deep was your container? Maybe that was part of the problem? Sorry, I wish I could help.
