Have you ever read the ingredients on the back of a packet of taco seasoning? Maltodextrin, monosodium glutamate, silicon dioxide, soybean oil and malic acid are just a few I noticed.
Want a healthy alternative? Try this recipe for taco seasoning, not only is it way better than that stuff in a packet, a 5 year old can pronounce all the ingredients.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika {I used smoked paprika}
1 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
Mix all the spices together in a small bowl, then store in an airtight container.

Oh this is too funny for my sister and I were just talking about making our own yesterday morning! And I hadn’t gotten around to looking it up any where. Thanks for this Mavis. And Happy Halloween!

I make my own too. So yummy and cheaper. I like where other recipes put some cornstarch sort thickens up a bit. 😉

I’ve been making my own for about 6 months now. So much better than the store bought stuff. And Mavis, I’m like you, if a 5 year old can pronounce the ingredients, then it is way better for you!

Thanks for the info, I totally want to start doing this

Last sunday I was halfway into making chili con carne when I realized I was out of my usual chili spice mix… I made a small batch of this and used it in about the same amount I would normally use… fantastic! Thank you for this very useful tip!

Is this recipe for one pound of meat?
Mavis says
I like to use about 1 tablespoon of spice mix per 1 pound of meat.

The photograph looks like there is masa harina included, but I don’t see it in your recipe. If you’ve never tried it in your mix, you should. I like the slightly different flavor and the way it changes the consistency of the prepared meat.

How much of this to 1 pound of meat? Or is the whole thing to one pound of meat?
Thanks!
Mavis Butterfield says
1 Tablespoon to 1 pound of meat.

Just finished up my first batch of homemade taco seasoning. It was such a hit with family and friends that I am attaching a label to the jar with the recipe. I tripled your recipe and store it in a clean glass pizza sauce jar. Due to a sensitivity to MSG and sulphites I am searching out homemade recipes. I’m so glad I found your website through pinterest. Thanks for a great recipe to add to my spices.

Mavis, I’ve been making this for a few years now, and I haven’t thanked you yet! It’s fantastic, and my family (including 2 young girls and my Mexican husband) all enjoy it 🙂 The only thing I didn’t already have was the Chili Powder (my husband didn’t believe in chili powder mix – he made his own blend whenever he made chili colorado), but NOW, I do, and we have this almost every week, usually Taco Tuesday 🙂 I actually had to mix up a new batch this week (Taco Monday – sue me!) while the meat was already in the pan (turned off the heat though), and was back in action in a few minutes 🙂

Do you add water to this recipe like store bought taco seasoning?
Beth says
I’m wondering the same thing. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this recipe. I made up a batch yesterday and used it up. I needed another batch today and since we like spicy, I added cayenne pepper. Very good!

Why do you use oregano & not coriander? Just curious✌️
