Do you ever purchase pre-bagged produce at the grocery store?
If you do, the next time you’re at the market weigh a few bags first before you toss one in the cart. You’d be surprised at how much of a difference in the weight of the bags.
The bag of apples you see above was suppose to contain 3 pounds of apples, but it actually weighed 3 pounds 8 ounces. I don’t know about you, but half of a pound of free apples sounds like a pretty sweet way to save money at the grocery store without using a coupon.
How about them apples?

P.S. Do you do this too, or do you think I’m total crazy person for doing this.

Absolutely you should weigh stuff that isn’t sold per pound!! I do that when I buy Romaine or green/red leaf lettuce when the price is per head and not by weight.

Yes, I do this. I often find the extra 1/2 lb. It is the same as looking for the biggest watermelon when they are all the same price.

Hey, I don’t know if you will see this or have time to comment, but you posted a pizza sauce recipe a week or so ago with a “mystery” pepper. Can you tell me what it is? I made it with 1 jalapeno and it was mighty spicy, but maybe that was from the red pepper flakes. I’d like to make it again, but maybe a different pepper would be better? Thanks!!!!!
Mavis says
I have no idea what the pepper was… LOL. You might want to try it with an milder peper… maybe an Anaheim pepper?

I made your sauce and my family loved it. I added a can of green chilis in place of the pepper because I didn’t have any. I also didn’t have quite enough tomatos so, I just added 2 cans of diced tomatos. It turned out great anyway!

Glad to know you liked it. 🙂

My problem with it is that the stores I frequent at often stash their less desirable fruit this way.

I worked at an organic grocery before and I learned to “pretty up” the lettuce, cabbage, etc. by taking off the wilted outer leaves. After a few days, the head is quite a bit smaller and less fresh, but still just as expensive if sold “by the head”. I always reach in back or underneath for newer, fresher, bigger heads! (or wait until the produce is restocked)

My mom did this for years, I always weigh bagged item, my husband thought I was crazy until he saw the difference. I do it with the chicken breast I buy from our local chain store, mother can range from .6 kg to over 1 kg, I do that as well for the cheese that is sold at Safeway for one price, every little bit helps .
