This year I’m adding parsley to the herb garden. I started some Italian Flat Leaf Parsley under grow lights the other day and I’m pretty excited about it. Not only do I plan on using it fresh, but I’m hoping to grow enough to dehydrate for use in the winter months as well.
Brief description: Parsley is a biennial herb {lives for about 2 years}. It has a mild flavor and can compliment almost any dish.
Where to Plant Parsley: Parsley can be planted in raised beds, garden beds, or containers. It likes warm soil, so a sunny location is best.
Planting Seeds: Seeds should be soaked in water for 12-24 hours prior to planting. Start seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds about 1/4″ deep. Thin to 1 plant per pot when seedlings reach 1″ tall.
Growing Tips: Parsley roots like to go deep, so make sure you have at least a 10″ deep spot for them. Water deeply to avoid letting parsley dry out.
How to Harvest: Pick entire stalk, all the way to the ground.

Fun Fact: Parsley is a fantastic companion plant for roses and/or tomatoes. It will bring the smell out in your roses and help your tomatoes grow faster.

I grow parsley every year. I’ve grown the flat leaf and curly leaf varieties. It’s so easy to grow and needs very little care. I use it in everything! Soups, stews, roasts, salads, dips, etc. I love adding it to hummus in particular. It gives food a very fresh flavor. .
One thing to remember when growing it-rabbits LOVE it, so you’ll want to grow it where they can’t get to it.

just got our seed package from Botanical Interests, and we are planting some parsley for the first time. By the way, thanks for the recommendation. Not only did we get a free packet of tomato seeds, but they also gave us a packet of mesclun greens. So excited.

I love parsley and put it on and everything, I love that fresh bitter kick. However I think it’s pretty flavorless dried. You can chop and freeze them in little cubes for adding to cooked dishes. Trader Joes sells basil, parsley, garlic, and ginger this way. Hot peppers as well.
