If you have kids, you probably have some cheese sticks in your refrigerator. If you’ve never tried making your own mozzarella sticks before this recipe is not only super easy to make, but much healthier than those mozzarella cheese sticks you get in the frozen food section of your local grocery store. These are perfect any day of the week, but especially for Super Bowl Sunday.
Ingredients
8 cheese sticks, cut in half
1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, shredded
Marinara sauce for dipping
Unwrap cheese sticks, cut in half and place on a lined cookie sheet. Place cheese sticks on lined cookie sheet and freeze. Once the cheese sticks are frozen, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Grab 3 cereal bowls.
In bowl #1 crack egg, discard shells, whisk egg and set aside.
In bowl #2 place 2 tablespoons flour in bowl and set aside.
In bowl #3 mix together Panko bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning and set aside.
One at a time, roll cheese sticks in flour, than egg mixture and finally Panko mixture. Placed coated mozzarella sticks on a lined cookie sheet or silpat and baked at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on each side.
Special Note – Cheese sticks MUST BE FROZEN for this to work. If your cheese is not frozen, it will just melt into a gooey mess in your oven.

These are so good! Better yet, they are quick and easy to make. I cut the cheese sticks in half while still in the wrapper, and toss them in the freezer till I’m ready to make them. I use Italian breadcrumbs and omit the added seasonings. Thank you for this recipe!

so I tried to make these last night for my friends and they went horribly wrong. How long as they supposed to be in the freezer? Mine were in there for about 2-3 days and when I rolled them in the flour and egg…the mixture wouldn’t stick to the cheese? The Panko wouldn’t cover all the cheese stick because the egg and flour couldn’t coat it well enough. I followed the instructions to the T. So I’m guessing it had to do with how long they were in the freezer..?

HI!
I made these this past weekend. They were good but I was wondering if there is a way to make them not so oozy and messy. The cheese sticks were frozen overnight and I followed the recipe to the T. I baked them for maybe 8 minutes because they were all starting to get super flat and oozy. I brought them out and let them cool and harden up a bit. They were just really flat and I think the batter could have cooked longer but I didn’t want it to turn into one big flat cheese pizza! haha Is this normal?

Hi everyone — freeze the sticks AFTER they are all dipped and coated for about an hour. Take them directly out of the freezer and pop them in the oven for about 10 minutes. Delicious!
