This picture is for all you wonderful people out there who left me encouraging comments about my bark snafu telling me not to worry, that the orange bark wasn’t really that bright and don’t worry Mavis, it will be okay, the bark will fade in a few months.
Really? After seeing this updated picture do you still believe everything is under control here in Mavisland?
I can’t stop laughing it’s so bad.

YA it is pretty awful 🙁 but that being said, great pose…was it taken from your roof?
Mavis says
Back deck. 🙂
Carol says
Think of it this way – it matches your chicken coop.
Mavis says
Totally true!
MaryBeth says
Bark color aside, I think this is the best picture of your gsrden.
Grandma PattyB says
I agree!
Bren says
Wish I had your backyard
Desi says
Hmm, I still think it doesn’t look bad. I guess you could spray paint it…
Annette says
Really it’s amazing how fast it fades.
Mandy says
I say work the color into your other posts, then it won’t stand out so much. . .
“Oompa, loompa, doopity doo, I have an Amazon deal just for you!”
Mavis says
Awesome!
Lisa says
I think it looks great!
Karen Coghlan says
I wish I had your energy… The bark is a good contrast with the trees and plants.
Robin says
Well look on the bright side if aliens from space are looking for a stand out spot to land your house will be easily identifiable. LOL thanks goodness it will only fade from this point forward.
Mavis says
Hey, good point. I totally forgot about the possibilities of a UFO landing site.
Brooklyn says
Wow your garden is beautiful!! Im sure the orange will fade after a while;)
sharon says
Humm.. you did say you really wanted colour this time of year 🙂
bonnie fuentevilla says
um………………….tell your HH not to give you a hard time. If he’s like my HH, he will like the conformity.
Deborah Robbins says
Your garden in all it’s glory is beautiful…..Just imagine all your veggies, flowers in bloom, critters scampering about…..The bark is just fine….
Kerrie says
Well I’m not gonna lie…..it’s pretty bright! My OCD tendencies would have me ordering enough to give it partial coverage in a darker color…..or maybe just buy a pair of tinted sunglasses that made it look like another color to me 😉
Heidi says
Given I’m an OSU beaver by marriage and their colors are orange and black at our house you would would be considered a totally committed fan. My boys would think you were the bomb
Jules says
My first thought, Pretend you love OSU! GO beavs 🙂
Krista says
i think its very nice looking:)
Sakura says
I’m in Utah, and Southern Utah looks like that naturally, no bark needed! I think it’s lovely and it helps us spot all your hard work laying bark a lot easier!! 🙂
Linda says
Look at all of the hard work that you’ve done…. It looks fine! Don’t worry, go have a glass of wine or some hot tea and relax a little !!!
Bridget P says
I’m with Jules and Heidi on this, totally Beavs colors!! 🙂
Tali says
my eyes, my eyes…..I think I’ve gone blind!
lol, Mavis….nice to see that not all is perfect in your world…:)…it will fade, not before your HH will let you know what he thinks about it but who cares…..you have enough sense of humor to handle it.
Becca says
Not bad. It probably looks so bright because you were used to the already faded bark mulch. This stuff will fade soon too.
Shelley van Erp says
It will fade over a long time. But I like it. The colour compliments greens and purples so run with that. And have you seen the 80s colours are back? Just get a perm and a mullet for the HH and you can be a trend setter.
Solecito Bonito says
Wow I luv it!
Tracie says
I think it looks great Mavis. I am sure it will fade as it weathers!
Jen says
What does it say about me that my first thought was “Ooooh, a woman after my own heart. Look at that tidy yard!”
And then when I read your comments: “What orange?”
Deb L says
oh wow. LOL at least it will fade, and once all the veggies and flowers grow in nicely the contrast might be really cool! At least the greenery will tone down the bark 🙂 And… it isn’t that bad. Truly. full disclosure: I would paint the exterior of my house like a stripey Dr Seuss book if I could get away with it. 😉
Elizabeth says
Bark aside… I’m glad to see this photo because it gives me a better understanding of what your yard actually looks like. I had no idea how deep it was! Curious what your acreage is?
Mavis says
A little over an acre, but we are only using about 10% to grow food right now.
Melissa says
It makes me notice how organized your garden and chicken coop area are.
Marsha says
It will most definitely fade. Did you end up getting the whole thing done with 30 yards of it? Also, do you mind letting us know how big your lot is? This pic makes it look huuuuuuuge!
Nancy McDaniel says
The beautiful bright backdrop will certainly make all your plants stand out as they grow in. Think of it as tactile modern art! Love your blog!
Mavis says
Modern Art. 😉 I will tell the HH.
KC says
On the plus side, it’s on your garden rather than on you? (I think it’s spray-tan color, personally)
But seriously, the top layer will fade fast with the alternating rain and sun.
Pam says
At least you didn’t pay to have 75 yards of that color blown in!
Mavis says
Sooooo true.
Bonnie G Morrow says
Well, I think once you get busy with all of the chores of gardening it won’t bother you so much. You just have too much time to look at right now. Just look at it this way: You are lucky you can afford the bark and landscape fabric rather than having to fight weeds all year in your paths….. Hope that helps. 🙂
vicki says
Love it Mavis. We live in Missouri and with the drought last summer everything turned brown would have loved all that color!!!!
Lisa says
I would think you’ve made quite the hit with the little leaguers! Play Ball! (hee-hee)
Brandie says
Im with Sakura, Some of the most beautiful parts of Utah and Arizona are that reddish orange color. I like it, all the green will look very pretty with it when things start to fill in.
jubob says
mavis i think it looks wonderful. and once all your raised beds etc, are going strong, you won’t notice the color. everything will blend and who knows maybe this color will accent the flowers you plant. chin up chicky
Teckla says
Realistically, I think you are going to have this color for a year or so before it fades too much. I laid down 10 cubic yards of it last may and it’s still pretty bright. Best thing, though, is that you have all your garden and other plantings and the green will make a nice contrast. Like another commenter said, at least you have the resources to buy it and didn’t have to pay for 75 yards either! Life is full of laughs. I so enjoy your blogging. It makes my day happier. 🙂
Blair says
Your bit of sunshine on a gray day! Lots of planting area!!!
Susie says
You said it looked darker when it was wet, when you chose it, right? Well, it rains an awful lot up there, plus you’ll be watering your crops when it doesn’t rain. Sooooo, I’m thinking it will be nice & dark a good portion of the time. Don’t sweat it ~ it’s mulch. And the color adds character & will make your green plants “pop”!

We Boise State Broncos love Orange and Blue. In fact our Turf grows Blue here.
