I hope you all took my advice and took a nap this week. If you tried, but couldn’t seem to fall asleep, here’s a list of foods that actually help you get a better night’s rest {or mid-afternoon’s rest, whatever floats your boat}:
- Cherries – They are high in melatonin, a natural sleep aid.
- Fish – Fish, especially cod, tuna, shrimp and halibut, have tryptophan. {The fish listed have even higher amounts than turkey.}
- Lemon Balm – Lemon Balm is part of the mint family. It’s super easy to grow, and you can float a bit in hot water for a make-shift tea, or use it in cooking.
- Chamomile – Chamomile is another herb that has been used for insomnia for thousands of years. {Guess I’ll have to add another cup of tea to my daily regimen, darn!}
- Bananas – They have high levels of potassium and magnesium, which help with muscle relaxation.
- Spinach – It really is a super food. Like bananas, spinach is high in potassium and magnesium. It also packs a punch in the calcium department, which helps your body manufacture melatonin naturally.
- Dairy – Again, high in calcium. Guess Grandma was right, a glass of warm milk before bed really does help you sleep.
- Almonds – Almonds are high in magnesium and calcium. Bring on the almond butter!
Sweet dreams,
Mavis

Will have to try a few of these. We’re already at 15 hours of daylight here. Sunrise at 6:30a and sunset at 9:30p and we’re no where near Solstice! I have the hardest time adjusting until about Mid May then I can fall asleep regardless, right now my brain is zinging from all the extra daylight.
Think how much gardening and shenanigans youi could accomplish living here Mavis! LOL!

I drink spirulina and chia seeds mixed in pomegranate juice before bed. For some reason that does the trick for me and I sleep through the night usually. It sounds gross, but it’s actually pretty good-I think so at least!

Do you grow chamomile in your garden? If not, it’s really easy and you can dry your own flowers so you can enjoy them in the winter 🙂 And I have to agree with the lemon balm… it’s one of the most soothing teas I know and I love the fact that it’s one of the first herbs that pop up in the spring!
Have a great day!

My 7 year old daughter is convinced that a banana before bed works. She developed some sleep issues a while back and after searching for things that could help that she would actually eat. On the days where she feels like she needs a bit of extra help sleeping or if her legs are feeling a bit crampy or tired from sports or playing she will ask for a banana before bed and she swears it works for her. Now that I see cherries on the list I will have to give that a try.

I used to drink a mug of hot milk every night before bed. Now I drink a mug of hot heavy whipping cream. I know, don’t tell me how bad that is for me. And how it must taste like butter. I know all this. But heated, oh it’s so nutty and creamy and sweet and thick and good. And I am talking nonsense and falling asleep in my chair before the last gulp. Love it. Sweet nibblets, it’s divine.

Oranges, too! I don’t know why. But I believe it!
Every night, I eat oranges.
