Backyard Garden Plot Pictures – Week 17 of 52
It’s amazing how different a garden can look when you’ve been away for a week. In my opinion this is when it starts to get fun {picture wise}. Now that the weather is starting to warm up we can see more growth and green stuff sprouting up in the garden beds. Pretty stinkin’ awesome if you ask me.
The garden fence is my favorite part of the garden right now. It’s popping with color and I LOVE it!
The broccoli raab bolted while we were out of town. Boo! Now I have to pull it up and re-plant the raised garden bed. I’m not sure why it happened but I have more started in the greenhouse so I’m not too disappointed.
The bases around the DIY pea teepees is starting to fill up.
I’d say we are about another 5 to 6 weeks away from a bumper sugar snap pea harvest.
After visiting Eliot Coleman’s greenhouse at Four Season Farm, I seriously need to get my act together and fill this sucker to the top with garden starts. After seeing his greenhouses, mine is practically bare.
According to the gnomes there has been no new growth in the potato towers.
Here is a view from the back deck. I still need to have the HH get a truck load of dirt and put it in that bare patch juts behind the daffodils that are sitting under the cedar tree. Also, our second batch of peas {green arrow I think} are starting to appear in the patch of soil near the chicken coop.
The fava beans in front of the chicken coop are looking really healthy.
I haven’t grown them in so long I’ll have to look up a few recipes before we harvest them later this summer.
The future pumpkin patch looks totally bare and lonely. It didn’t occur to me until just now that I should go out there and plant a bunch of lettuce seeds or radishes.
I can’t believe the daffodils are still hanging in there.
A view of the raspberry patch from the kitchen window.
My container herb garden.
Check out the oregano. It’s looking pretty fierce.
What’s new at your place? Have you planted anything yet?

Your yard/garden is beautiful! I love your bulbs. When we buy a home, I’ll be planting lots of bulbs.
I took your advice and started work on a container garden as we’re just renting. I also was able to plan out some garden space in the actual ground. We planted some herbs, as well as some tomatoes (started them indoors).
Thanks for all of your inspiration!

Here in Portland (OR), the potatoes (planted mid-March) are finally coming up. Lettuce is doing well but not ready for harvest yet (the soil has been REALLY cold, but we’re supposed to get lots of warm sunshine this week). Strawberries are blooming but no berries have formed yet, and I haven’t seen many bees venturing out. Garlic’s doing great. I’ve got broccoli starts in the greenhouse that need to go outside SOON. Onion starts are still indoors under the grow lights, and I’m keeping my tomato, pepper and eggplant starts inside as long as I can, to give them a head start until the soil warms up in May. We’re just now getting our two new raised beds prepped with a good compost and mushroom compost mix – I think beans and maybe the onions will go there. Yup, I know it’s spring for sure, because there’s too much to do in the garden. What a wonderful “problem” to have!

Here in Westminster, California, I’ve been harvesting radishes for a while (and lettuce from under grow lights in the house). The first Zucchini flower is just about to open, I’m a couple days away from harvesting nice broccoli crowns, and I harvested my first cucumber today!
You’re an inspiration, Mavis. Normally, I wouldn’t even be getting my garden planted until late April (we have a cold backyard in winter).
Mavis says
I cannot believe you are harvesting cucumbers already! Awesome!!

I just read in a book that you can companion plant corn and pumpkins. Perhaps you should start the corn in your pumpkin patch.

I love checking out your weekly garden. I have planted, peppers, zucchini, strawberries and tomatoes. It’s not a big garden, but it’s a start!
I have a question, you said the broccoli raab has bolted, how can you tell if something has bolted and why does it happen?
Mavis says
Hey Cheryl,
That is a great question. I will write up a picture post for you shortly. 🙂

You are awesome, thanks.
