Yesterday as Mrs. Hillbilly and I were headed to the Anderson Island Historical Farm when we came upon a garage sale. It didn’t look like much of a sale from the road, but we parked the car and took a look around anyway.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that garage sales rule!
Pretty much every garage sale I’ve been to has a boatload of pots and pans and other mismatched kitchen and household goods. This one was no exception.
There were even rusty old paint cans.
Trinkets.
Mrs. Hillbilly went away with a chess board, a mini beaded gourd and some sort of science kit.
She bought the science kit for her kids so they could use it next fall for a science fair project. They are going to place Mrs. HB’s baby teeth in the tubes and see what will make them rot the fastest. Diet Coke, Lemon Juice, Alcohol, Sugar and who knows what else. Weird, but cool.
Oh and check this out. This is that lady who was hosting the garage/front porch sale. She was a total nut. I bought a tambourine for a buck and she chanted some sort of folk song for me.
I think maybe she had something in that cup of hers other than tea. Hmm.
I ended up leaving with an old wooden bowl, 2 wooden butter spoons, a vintage potato masher and a tambourine for $5. The Handsome Husband took one look at my purchases and deemed them all trash.
I say they are treasures.
What do you think?

I love them ,I think they are most defiantly Treasures .I have been wanting wooden bowls for a long time and they either cost way too much or you can’t find real ones. good for you .
Erin Wilson says
Trash?! Yeah, I would have cleaned them out of wooden bowls/mashers as fast as I could.
Dianna says
Mavis, you left with too few wooden bowls! I would have had to had them all. I’m all about wood and pottery. I was just dreaming about asking for some really good wooden spoons for my birthday this fall. It will take me a while to collect the set I want, but I know they will last for years!
Tracie says
Totally would have bought the other wooden bowls. Those are amazing! So I vote “Treasure”.
Kay Crichton says
I would have grabbed more wooden things. The gourd that your friend bought is a real find and actually worth quite a bit of money, in addition to being beautiful. Good finds.
Mavis says
I know! She swooped it up before I could grab it. Ha!
Helen in Meridian says
I would have purchased the covered bowl and the giant bowl and the next to giant bowl too. How much were the largest pieces? The whole table looks like a picture out of a country or southern magazine.
Mavis says
There were no prices on anything! I thought I did pretty good for $5. 🙂
Lisa says
I don’t like it when people don’t mark items. I don’t want to insult people with too low of a price, but want to get the best deal I can. I think you got several treasures!
Holly Burnham says
I predict you will use that little wooden bowl often. The butter spoons are very neat….I don’t think I’ve ever seen those.
Sandra says
Mavis – tell your HH and family that our family thinks you are just real cool ! ! !
Tali says
TRASH!……………….:)
Jules says
I would have bought the house if it was for sale! Love the front porch!
And the wooden bowl is pretty cool. The tambourine – totally worth it if you need another way to get your kids moving in the morning.

When I see you in your fabulous gown, it reminds me that when I lived in Portland I won a drawing to have my picture taken with the Portland Rose Festival Court. I got to rule over Rosaria for 15 minutes. Of course the dh and boy were into taking pictures of all the lovely high school senior girls in the court. I only had a day’s notice and realized I didn’t have a gown. My peach silk dress looked great with their plum long gowns, but I vowed to never be without a formal or two…just in case. So, I have some gowns but no tiara. Do you have a tiara?
Mavis says
I have no tiara Helen. Now I need one! I like the way you think!
Nada says
How on earth did you walk away without buying every one of those fabulous wooden bowls? Treasure indeed!
kristie says
My thing is your husband doesnt seem as supportive of u trying to better ur lives …repurpose, recycle, reuse…. does he not see whats going on in the world ..monsanto…gmos….small farmers being put out of business….or does he not care…
Susan says
WOW!! Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!!
Not Mavis, BUT my DH would also call those purchases TRASH! And that’s ok…he’s entitled to his opinion. It doesn’t mean he’s unsupportive or doesn’t care about the world. We all have things we are passionate about. And garage sales, thrift stores and used items are NOT his “thing”.
But he has other wonderful qualities. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be married to him for almost 42 years. Likewise, Mavis has been married a long time. Something’s working right! 🙂
It’s just not right to attack someone’s integrity or character when you don’t even know them!! Your post came across as angry.
