I snapped a few photos of our square foot garden this morning and thought I would share. We pulled 10 ounces of radishes from 2 squares and replanted them with lima beans. I don’t think I’ve ever grown lima beans before but I thought they might be fun to try.
A while back we planted 1 broccoli plant and take a look at it now! Yee-haw, looks like stir fry will be on the menu soon.
The kohlrabi is getting nice and fat.
I went ahead and clipped all the lettuce {2 ounces} for a small lunch salad but as I was clipping, I noticed this guy:
Mmm yum. Too bad we don’t eat slugs because we sure grow a lot of them.
We have 3 tomato plants in our square foot garden and they all have flowers on them. I think I planted my favorite Japanese black trifle tomatoes in the garden bed but I’m not sure.
Celery. This won’t be ready to harvest until early fall.
And sugar snap peas. My favorite.
Since this was my first week of harvesting veggies from the square foot garden, I thought I would be fun to keep track of how much food we pull from the 4×8′ bed. I have absolutely no idea how much we’ll end up with, but I’m almost tempted to go for 100 pounds. Would that be attainable? I don’t know but I feel like I need to have some sort of goal.
What do you think is realistic?
Did you plant a square foot garden this year? If so, how is it doing? Will you be weighing your veggies too?

Lima’s make me CRAZY! They are one of my favorite things to eat and every year I spend countless hours wondering if they are going to make it. Beware, they are a 90 day crop here in the south and that LOOONNNGG wait can kill an impatient gardener!

Did you try feeding the slugs to the chicken? Chop them up into bitesize pieces. There’s a video of this somewhere on Youtube.

Like you, I too grow a lot of slugs and snails! Think I got the tip of using eggshells in the garden from you several weeks ago.
Crushed up several of them and have placed them around the lettuce plants and the celery. No more slugs! Knock on wood! Deterring them is what I want until I see one with an armor belly plate!
Good Luck!

Mavis:
Another deterrent for slugs is diatomatous earth. You may be able to find a box or bag of it at a local home and gardern center. It is material that is solely the very small leftover shells of tiny crustations and is normally used to help loosen up clay based soils and other things, AND as filtering material in some water filter setups.
Anyway this stuff is deadly to slugs and snails because it is sharp and they can’t crawl across it and survive. Spread it on top of the ground around you entire patch and they can’t enter.

I planted a square foot garden this year – – just herbs, tomatoes, and peppers for now. I just found your site recently and am looking forward to seeing how your sf garden progresses.

I used to hate finding slugs. Now, I see them as free chicken food. The girls love ’em!

Mavis,
You have inspired me this year. I live in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon and am growing lots of veggies this year. I have six potato towers that are almost as tall as I am and they are blooming away. I have harvested lettuce, swiss chard, peas, and my blueberries are starting to turn blue. I bought a scale and I am going to weigh my veggies. I am just curious. I hope to put up a lot of tomatoes, green beans, etc. Thank u for being so ambitious. It’s catching!

Hi Mavis! I have read about using a “copper tape” on raised flower beds to keep out slugs. I wonder if you or any of your readers have tried it successfully? Also, how do you keep your broccoli from bolting? Mine does it every year!!

Hi Mavis,
Do you know how to get rid of small green worms eating my cabbage? like you i don’t like using chemicals on my plants, so i was thinking maybe you know an organic way of getting rid of them, aside from hand-picking them of course.. 🙂 thanks!

Send me a picture so I can see the damage and I’ll try and help. 🙂
