Thanksgiving, it was like 2 months ago, right? Okay, so it was really last week but holy cats Batman, turkey day seems like it happened ages ago to me. I had hoped to stay clear of any sort of store last week and luckily I already had all the ingredients I needed so I didn’t have to venture out into the madness and crowds.
Leading up to the big day we ate a lot of pasta for some strange reason. I didn’t plan it that way but every time I opened the pantry those adorable fettuccine nests from Costco were staring back at me. I also made a batch of Nutella and Banana Muffins, another {plain} pasta dish, homemade turkey soup, and of course there were all those Thanksgiving leftovers that took 3 days to gobble up.
The Girl made her turkey and as usual, it was perfect.
My gravy HAS to rest in the center of the mashed potatoes…. Does yours?
With no trips to the grocery store and it being Thanksgiving week and all, I don’t have too much to report. But one night The HH did come home with a couple of pieces of salmon a client gave him… so that was pretty exciting.
Now that all the leftovers are gone it’s time to get cooking again.
On my list of things I plan to make this week:
- Quinoa Salad with Feta {I’ll have to modify it since I don’t have spinach}
- Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Sheet pan salmon and green beans
- Sausage and broccoli quiche
- Roasted Brussels Sprouts
- Tater Tot Casserole {freezer meal}

I totally agree with you about gravy has to be in the middle of the mashed potatoes! We had a pretty simple Thanksgiving but no we aren’t through the leftovers yet and we have eaten them ever day so we have had turkey and side dishes 4 days and counting.. Does anyone ever finish the stuffing? We never do! I think I will take the rest of the turkey and freeze it to have turkey and noodles later. I did make a great dessert that was well received which was mini cheesecake parfaits with cranberry sauce on top-it was a no bake recipe and very easy- and a great option for those who didn’t want apple pie and pumpkin pie.

We started out Thursday with a big fish and shrimp fry, au gratin potatoes, Cesar salad, and banana pudding. Friday we had a smoked turkey breast, a cajun fried turkey, green bean casserole, mac n cheese candied yams, carrots, salad, rolls, dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy, chocolate pecan pie and peach cobbler. Sunday we smoked a boston butt for 18 hours to make pulled pork which we served with potato salad and beans. My fridge is stuffed to the brim. We shouldn’t have to go to the grocery store all week as we can eat leftovers. Every year I say I need to cook about half as much as the year before, but alas it never seems to happen.

Have you seen the beautiful 6 qt Pioneer Woman slow cookers at Walmart. They are made by Hamilton Beach and only $24.99 or $29. You can look at them on Walmart web site.

No gravy here. You see, my spouse’s proper mashed potatoes are made with sour cream, butter, and cream cheese. Gravy is simply unnecessary.
In any event, we traveled this year, visited 3 cousins of mine who I haven’t seen in decades (they all live in the same town now). My elder cousin hosted, and had mashed potatoes without the heart attack. Still, I opted out of the gravy due to gluten issues.

We are down to the last meal of turkey vegetable soup for tonight.
We had a larger crowd than usual…each of our 3 grown children brought someone who would otherwise be alone and a couple of our Granddaughters were here, too. It was a lot of fun!! 🙂

We spent our Thanksgiving in Florida (we’re from Michigan) which was pretty awesome but kind of weird at the same time. We were in our motorhome but managed a pretty decent meal of ham, mashed potatoes and carrots. I really missed the stuffing and cranberry sauce but couldn’t complain about the 80 degrees vs 40’s at home.

My husband HAS to have a “potato volcano” every time gravy and mashed potatoes are served, just like you, ha ha! The children have learnt this and now all make their own potato volcanos. It’s fun to see what we pass on to them.

2nd turkey went into brine this morning to be roast tomorrow afternoon. After 3 days of preparations, Thanksgiving Day was wonderful with our first 10 day old grandchild! I parceled out all the leftovers and sent them home with each of our “kids” knowing I had another turkey defrosting. The majority of this turkey will be portioned out into lunches with mashed and gravy for HH’s lunches. I’ll boil down the carcass for soup stock, pressure can it and give to my daughters. Turkey soup isn’t my favorite meal.

We went to my brother in-laws. My husband said we must host Christmas because we had no leftovers at our house, which was a tragicty.

Your grocery totals for the year are impressive. I have been doing a No Spend November and had a limit of $25/week for groceries. I also made the rule that I could use a $50 gift card I had and a Publix gift card total of about $15. I still have gone over by about $50. I really can’t wait to go shopping—I am craving salads and fresh fruit.
You have been my inspiration for saving money. I really want to pay off our mortgage early. We may actually move and downsize to do it, but we haven’t found anything we are interested in purchasing. So, in the meantime, we will continue to try and pay down our current mortgage. We actually cash flowed our daughter’s wedding in October, so we haven’t pay as much extra on the mortgage as we would have liked this year.
