Yesterday Mrs. HB stopped by to bring me homemade soup and make sure I was on the mend after my cootie filled airplane ride. She’s such a good {old} neighbor and totally deserves a blue ribbon or something for friend of the year.
3 bean soup, chicken soup {plus noodles!} 2 Cokes because she says everyone likes a Coke when they are sick {!?} and 3 liberated bags of Earl Grey tea from her last work conference. Bless her heart!
My husband? He brought me home a pint of Chunky Monkey {my favorite}. And a box of toaster strudel and Pik.Nik. Which would have been like, totally rad, if I was 10 and rode a BMX bike.
But hey, you gotta give the guy an A for effort. Right?
Husbands… even when you’ve been married to them for over 20 years… they can still amaze you. 😉
I bought a $6 box of Tappas on the way down and the $7.50 cheese and fruit platter on the way home. Because sometimes, you really just have to throw caution to the wind and live it up. Especially on a 5 1/2 hour flight.
Breakfast $16.62 at some random coffee shop. Who knew a sausage and egg biscuit could taste so good with a little chopped jalapeno? It totally does. You need to try it. And, get this, when I ordered a “London Fog” they had no idea what I was talking about. So I told the barista and she was like…. oh wow, that sounds really good. And now I totally think it should be re-named to the Where in the World is Mavis My Head is in a Fog. At least in that coffee shop at least.
The best steak tips and meatloaf sandwich on the planet set us back a whopping $43.61 with 2 iced teas and a tip.
And then there were those insanely good Cobb salads from the hotel we stayed at. Those cost us a pretty penny too. $36 with a tip if I remember correctly.
There was of course some regular meals like the last round of Thanksgiving leftovers, ham soup, my first trip to Chick-Fil-A, quinoa salad and salmon and Brussels sprouts. And I know this is the part where I am supposed to feel bad for my over spending and tell you that next week I’ll try and do a better job. But you know what? I’m not going to.
Last week was the best food week of the entire year for me. My friend brought me something homemade, I got to spend 48 hours of undivided time with my husband, and another 3 days in bed. For this girl? It was pretty spot on. Not that I want to be sick anytime soon again, but c’mon, mixing things up everyone in a while? It’s pretty freakin’ fantastic if you ask me.
Life. It’s just one big surprise after another.
Keep on, keepin’ on,
~Mavis

I had to research London Fog. I am a barista and have been making them for years, but a lot of people don’t know about it. Wikipedia said it was started in Vancouver, BC and is called a Vancouver Fog in Scotland! I’m curious on your experience with it during your travels in the UK?

How interesting! I had no idea that’s where the drink got started. I haven’t been to Europe since I discovered London Fog Lattes… but that would be interesting to find out about ordering them over there.

Here’s a nifty article on London fog drinks!

I gave a great recipe for those potato chip sticks. If you like chocolate covered pretzels you’ll love these.
I bag semi sweet chocolate chip
I bag butterscotch chips
2 c potato chip sticks (or broken up chips)
2 c cocktail peanuts
Melt chips, mix till smooth and add sticks and peanuts. Drop by clumps (you decide size, these are rich!) On parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Put in fridge 15 minutes or until set.

Nothing tastes better when you are sick than those salty little sticks, or the saltiness of boxed Lipton Noodle Soup. Homemade Noodle Soup may heal, but a bowl of the little Lipton Noodle Soup to start feeling better helps too.

I love those Tappas boxes they sell on Alaska Airlines. I always by one for myself and two more of my boys. They love them too and make a healthy lunch. BTW my sons are 28 and 37.

A long time ago coke syrep was given as medicine. I think back when it actually had cocaine in it. I have to have coke from McDonald’s when I’m sick. It tastes the best.

So glad Mrs. HB came to your rescue with the soup. I love reading about your friendship.

Good for you on enjoying yourself on your trip! I am a really thrifty person so splurging (especially on myself) is really hard, so I promised myself when my husband and I went on a trip to Las Vegs, I would not feel guilty. It was our first trip alone since our kids were born and we loved it! We stayed at the Bellagio(horrendously expensive) but it was so glamorous with fluffy bath robes waiting for us:) The best part was we cashed out our loose change we had saved up for over a year for $200 to gamble with and we actually won it all back(thanks to my husband betting $4 on a horse race…all of his horses placed, I think it’s called a trifecta….horse racing is not my forte) So yay for living it up!

Hi Mavis. Yesterday I made your Cinnamon Pot Roast for dinner. It was amazing! Thanks for posting that recipe.

Awesome Janet! I’m glad you liked it.

There’s a big difference between going enormously over budget once in a while when you do actually have that money, but you’d generally like it to go towards long-term “wants” – vs. going enormously over budget when you don’t have that money and it’ll be eating into either short-term or long-term needs. I think it’s great for you to demonstrate that you can be silly-frugal in various ways even when there’s money in the bank, but it’s a totally different situation when you do have that cushion than when someone’s really just barely getting by. So yes! Enjoy the expensive but enjoyable things sometimes, when they are in fact higher priority than the long-term want goals! But also realize that the freedom to break the budget without consequences is something not-universal, and also something that makes keeping to a budget the rest of the time feel less restrictive in some ways, because you aren’t denying yourself of *all* expensive treats. But in your situation, with a decent financial safety net, occasional splurges make sense!

So nice of Mrs HB to bring you some soup. We try to do that for our neighbors, too, when they’re sick. I know I appreciate it when we receive some!
When I was a kid, I was given Sprite or Fresca when I was sick. Soda was a rare treat for us kids. My mom was shocked to hear that my brother and I both faked fevers occasionally by putting the thermometer in our hot liquid beverage or next to the light bulb. We kept that secret for over 40 years!
The other things we got when we were sick was the over-the-counter cough syrup with codeine (very nap inducing!) and “honey lemon plus” – a mixture of hot water, lemon, honey, and “plus” (a little whisky or bourbon!) . Let’s just say that we slept very well when we were home sick!
