Fred Meyer $14.85
I stopped by Fred Meyer to stock up on their buy 5 save $5 deals. 4 pound bags of sugar, half gallons of milk, 18 count eggs, a free yogurt and Pringles and Little Debbie snacks were all $0.99 each.
I also snagged a rain check for 10 more bags of sugar to get me through baking season.
Did you grab the free French style yogurt that was offered as a Fred Meyer Friday freebie? Did you try it yet? The Girl did and she said it didn’t taste like anything special. The packaging sure is cute though.
I did a better job at taking pictures of the meal we ate this week. I made chicken enchiladas one night and two extra pans for the freezer. Let me know if you want the recipe and I’ll post it.
Chicken curry over rice.
I also made salmon and green beans for dinner one night and breaded Zaycon chicken and green beans the next.
Right now we are picking zucchini, cherry tomatoes and green beans from the garden daily.
Fried rice is something I pretty much make every single week at our house. I don’t really have a set recipe because I’ll just use what I have on hand. Monkey Boy especially loves the stuff. It’s crazy inexpensive to make, filling and a great thing to pack into lunches too.
Beef Broccoli. The HH made it. And it was delicious!
The Girl and I stopped by an antique store the other day and this lunch pail caught my eye. The tin pail was as wide as the palm of my hand and it got me to thinking about what people packed in their lunches in the old days compared to what they pack now. These days lunch boxes are twice the size and aren’t as simple a hunk of bread, and apple and maybe a cookie. If you’ve ever volunteered in a school lunchroom then you know what I’m talking about. It seems like everything is geared toward convenience and packaged foods these days.
Then again, my daughter will typically eat fruit, cheese and a few crackers for lunch. I’m pretty sure all of that would fit in one of those lunch pails. Also, mom, if you are reading this, didn’t she fan out those apples nicely? 😉
Fred Meyer $38.28
I couldn’t pass up 2 pound blocks of Tillamook cheese for $4.99 each. The HH needed coffee and I also grabbed a few random things while I was at Fred Meyer as well. Normally I buy the chicken coup base at Costco but I went grocery shopping at 7 am and Costco wasn’t opened yet.
So here’s a little money saving tip. Fred Meyer has pears on sale this week for $0.99 a pound.
But they also have pre-packeaged pears in the 2 pound as well. If you don’t mind #2 pears {pears that are a little smaller} then grab a bag and weigh them.
The 2 pound bag of pears that I grabbed actually had 2.5 pounds of pears in it. Hey now, that’s like getting a half of pound of pears for free!
Also, if you are into buying salad toppings in the produce section, keep your eye out for packages of Delallo Salad Savors {next the the Wholly Guacamole at my store}. These were priced at $2.00 a box and had $1.00 off peelies on them which made the Salad Savors just $1.00. It might be a convenient way to get a little cheese, dried fruit and nuts.
And last but not least, Fred Meyer has 20 bags of Private Selection tea on sale this week for $0.99 when you buy 4 boxes. I tried to find out who really makes the tea {because I’m pretty sure Kroger doesn’t have a tea factory} but I couldn’t find out anything. Has anyone tried this brand of tea? Is it any good? I was tempted to pick up 4 boxes because this is a CRAZY good price for tea bags.
How about YOU? Did you buy or find anything exciting this week? If you shopped Fred Meyer, did you stock up on sugar?
Curious minds want to know.

If you’re a vegetarian, or like the Gardein fake meat products, they are on sale for 2/$7 at Safeway, many with a $2 off peelie on them. PLUS Gardein is doing a promotion where you can submit your receipt from buying 3 products and get a $7 gift card. We are vegetarian and their products are kind of treats for us, so I made money buying special food 🙂
Amanda says
Oh my goodness! I’m jealous! I live in PA so no Safeway, but I’m vegetarian and also love Gardein as an occasional treat. That’s an awesome deal!
Diana says
You should check and see if they have the peelies at any store around you, $2 off plus the $7 promotion still makes for a great deal!
Kirsten says
Yes on the enchalida recipe
( please )

Does this help on the tea: “Private Selection Earl Grey Black Tea combines black tea handpicked from tea estates in the Nilgiri Mountains of Southern India with Italian bergamot oil for a classic, full-flavored blend with light citrus notes.” Found here: https://steepster.com/teas/kroger-private-selection/27446-earl-grey-black-tea
Karen S Picoult says
Yes on the enchilada recipe and the HH’s Beef Broccoli recipe!
Melissa M. says
Yes, please! I would love your enchilada recipe and HH’s Beef Broccoli recipe, if possible!
Kara says
I love the Private Selection line of teas! We don’t have Kroger or Fred Meyer were I live (western NY) so I stock up when I visit friends and family in Kentucky and North Carolina. The citrus green tea is my favorite.
PollyS says
I just bought citrus green last week. V V good!
Mrs. C. says
Mavis, are Lucy’s chickens laying yet? How about an update?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. However due to a blog stalking issue with the HOA, I won’t be posting any updates about them. 🙁
Vivian says
No wonder you want to move. What a pain.
Alison R says
Sorry the HOA is so anti chicken!
Can’t they focus on the properties that are NOT in such good shape instead of yours ?
Ps I do not like HOAs either! : (
Carolina says
Yep, you DEFINITELY need to move to New England. Who could possibly be against the “girls” from Downton Abbey??? I wish I could afford to send you a few months of principle payments to get you out of there quicker!!! One of the delights of my life is connecting people with other people and places that they I know they would enjoy. With that in mind, check out the Frugalwoods blog. They are a young couple who left Boston behind and moved to a homestead of 66 acres in Vermont. I don’t know them personally, but I think they are your kind of folks!

You find great deals at Meyers! Thanks for the inspiration to do better with my grocery shopping. There is always room for improvement in that area!
Randi says
Heading to FM today after work (Monday). is the sugar deal still going? I went to QFC ( a Kroger store) on Saturday and the sugar deal was not there.
Mavis Butterfield says
The sugar deal ended for us on Saturday at closing.
Deborah from Texas says
We don’t have a Fred Meyers here in East Texas, but our local grocery store Brookshire’s had a buy one get one for 1-cent sale. I got boneless pork chops, and boneless pork loin roast. Plus a few other things. We buy up the meats we eat whe. They have a buy one, get one sale.
YES on the enchilada recipe. And HH’s beef and broccoli recipe. I love both. So does my DH.
Merrie says
Private Selection label rarely disappoints and the tea is pretty dang good in my opinion.
Those little jars of Oui yogurt are pretty cute. I thought the yogurt was good but I wouldn’t pay full price or even half price. Free is good. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
Free is good. I was thinking the jars would make a wonderful watercolor jar or for homemade puddings or custards.
tia in boise says
i thought the Oui yogurt was a nice texture–didn’t notice any other difference, really. it was custardy–not thick and squeaky like Greek and not liquidy like typical yogurt. it was also COLD (due to the glass?), which i loved. i was bummed at the selection, though. vanilla–meh; strawberry–ick; cherry….oh, oh okay. i was hoping for lemon or peach. definitely wouldn’t buy full price—i try to buy yogurt when it’s $.25 or $.33.
Christina says
Sometimes I fill a salad bar container with blue cheese and bacon bits. It’s cheaper to buy salad toppings that way than to buy them from the departments and prepare them.
Julie says
I think you need to be French to really appreciate the awesomeness of the Oui yogurt! lol We finally get yogurt like we do at home! Same texture and everything! There are always discounts so they are not too expensive at the end. I’m so happy they exist! Love it!

I’m curious what you do with that much cheese at once. I’ve always thought about stocking up when it’s on sale (my family are cheese lovers..), but I’m not sure if we would get through it before it goes bad. Can you freeze it? Would it separate a bit if I made it into a freezer meal? Where I live, cheese is too expensive to experiment with if I don’t know the outcome!
Mavis Butterfield says
The expiration date on the cheese is July 2018, so plenty of time to use it.
Lilypad says
I buy those Tillamook cheeses when they go on sale and I shred them and freeze them in a zipper freezer bag. I take out about a week’s worth at a time, leave it out on the counter and stir it a bit for half an hour or so to defrost, then put it in a sealed container (Pyrex or similar, it must have a lid) and stash it in the fridge. The cheese freezes really well and I haven’t had any trouble with this method. We are a family of three and I don’t eat that much cheese, so one of those huge blocks will last us at least one month. I got three of them (the maximum) for $3.99 each when a new Safeway opened near us recently. That was the best price I’ve ever seen.
Connie says
I live in New Jersey and Unfortunately, we don’t have a Fred Meyer or Safeway. I love yogurt. I’ll have to try Oui!
