Quote of the Day “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
Poor little Lucy puggle. Yesterday the HH gave her a small piece of his bacon at breakfast. Then off and on yesterday and throughout the night, she kept trying to clear her throat. At first we thought well, she’ll work it out and everything will be fine. But last night was like sleeping with a sick toddler so I’m going to call the vet this morning and see what they have to say.
Mrs. Hillbilly was over yesterday {more on that later} and said it might be kennel cough. I said no. Because for starters, she doesn’t hang out in a kennel {she does go to doggy day care about once every 2 weeks for a few hours to play though}. I think it’s because of the bacon. I just hope there is something the vet can give her to help clear her throat… I’d hate to have her have a scope down her throat.
Lesson to be learned here… Don’t give your dog bacon. No matter how small the piece. 🙁 What do you think? has this ever happened to your dog?
Other than the bacon episode, yesterday was another great planting day in the garden. Spring is here, and you can read all about it over on Dig for Your Dinner.
Have a great day everyone,
♥ Mavis

Mrs. C. says
No bacon or other fatty foods, no matter how small. Apparently, it can trigger uveitis in a dog, an inflammation of the eye, which the body interprets as an infection. You will then have to get expensive treatment from a veterinary opthalmologist, which will cost almost $1000 because, to be safe, they have to rule stuff out. The dog will then be predisposed to get it again, and will have to eat a low fat diet to avoid it. ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS. All because of a piece of bacon smaller than my pinky nail.
DG says
Doggy Day Care?!?!? For a dog with a lovely back yard and loads of personal attention? I truly do not understand this.
Mavis Butterfield says
Ummm because she likes to interact with other dogs? If I never left home or had any interaction with humans I’d get pretty lonely.
Andrea says
My dogs eat tidbits of bacon regularly (as well as other things, of course we live in a rural area) and have never had problems. Does she try to eat grass in the yard?
Kathy says
Poor little Puggle! I think I would give Lucy some bites of bread to see if maybe that will help get any little piece of bacon that might be caught unstuck. And lots of water. I have a Beagle and they do a strange thing that is sorta like a cough but it is just something Beagles do. When my dog first started doing that, I was very concerned until I got online and read about it. I call it “snorkeling” when she does it.
Trish says
Hi Mavis,
I have a pug and he would have episodes at night sometimes where he would act like it was painful for him to swallow and he would do it over and over like something was stuck and he would salivate and be uncomfortable all night long then cough like his throat was irritated. the Vet diagnosis him with GERD or reflux and we give him a pill for that before dinner. fatocimide I think it is call (and I spelled it wrong) like 5 mg and it helped.
Apparently pugs are prone to that, it may be the pug part of the puggle coming out!
good to consult with a Vet first thought.
Lisa says
Kennel cough comes from being around other dogs. They can get it from going to doggy daycare. There is medicine to take once or twice a year to prevent it. Even if this situation is only bacon related it’s a good idea to discuss kennel cough with the vet.
Mrs. C. says
The uveitis I mentioned above is some type of immune reaction. They don’t know if a dog will get it, and they are not 100% sure why some get it when they do. I never had to worry about this ever before until last October. We have three dogs, and we rarely gave them treats like that. Now we don’t at all.
Laurie says
I agree with Mrs. HB, sounds like kennel cough. If you take her to doggy day care, be sure she gets the bortadella vaccine when she gets her shots. Anytime dogs are in an enclosed area with other dogs, they can pick it up. Poor Lucy, I hope she feels better soon.
Robin says
My Jack Russell coughs and will vomit and, ultimately, have diarrhea when given even a tiny bit of bacon. Unfortunately I didn’t connect the dots until the third time!
