It’s the age old question: How do you get your kids to eat their vegetables? Popeye did his best to spread a love of spinach and Jerry Seinfeld’s wife helped us learn how to sneak them into their food, but to instill a lifetime of veggie loving in our kids is much simpler than people might think.

What kid doesn’t like to play in the dirt? I don’t know about you, but playing in the dirt was high on my priority list when I was a kid. In fact, one of my favorite childhood memories was helping my grandparents harvest fruits and vegetables from their backyard garden. Apples especially, because my grandmother and I would make homemade applesauce together every year in her kitchen.

This is absolutely how I get my almost 3 year old to eat veggies. If I serve him a carrot from the store it’s “I don’t like carrots.” But take him out to the garden to pull a carrot from the carrot bed and he’ll eat it all the way to the carrot greens. Works like a charm.

I agree. Another way is not to have kid food and adult food. Food is food. My mom told us she was not a short order cook, period. We were expected to eat, and if we didn’t like it, then wait until the next meal. It helped that we had a big garden and got to help in it!
