Okay so it’s no big secret around here how much I LOVE landscape fabric. Some people are obsessed with shoes. Others can’t be without their cell phones, or a severe case of separation anxiety occurs. Me? I’d go into a state of mourning if landscape fabric ceased to exist.

I’m that way with tomato plants. Like some women are with shoes I walk by a shelf of tomato plants and have to look at each one all the while thinking “ooh how cute” or “I don’t have that one” and I. MUST. BUY. THEM. Even though I have no place to put them. 😉

Helen in Meridian says
Karin, have you seen the new green tinted quart jars at WINCO and Target? They are really pretty, and darker than the 100th anniversary recreation pint jars from last year.
Karin says
Yes I have , I live in Canada and they are around 16.00 for a dozen 🙁

Hmm, I think I will get some landscape fabric to put on the old gavel carport that now only grows weeds. I don’t want to plant any food plants there, but I could sit pots of hosta across the front of the carport to make it look better from the street. There is no longer a roof on the carport.

I used to like landscape fabric until I had to pull some up and saw what the soil looked like underneath. It was horrible. I did some research and found the pros in the short-term were good but in the long term not so good. So I’ve gone back to heavy mulch to keep weeds down which also helps the condition of the soil.

I love the concept, but it hasn’t been working as well for me as I’d like. I find the weeds grow up and eventually tear it. Maybe I need to double-up, or layer newspaper or cardboard down first… Also, I had a terrifying (for me) experience with a snake slithering under the landscape fabric and popping out at the edge of one of my raised beds. I’m terrified of snakes, and it felt like the something straight out of a horror movie!

I am curious to know how you plant a garden on top of it. Do you remove the fabric after a while? Or do you cut holes in it and plant? Thanks! You rock BTW 🙂
