Mavis–I love your raised beds. But I never saw a post about how you made them. Care to share the building process? Thank you so much!
~Jennifer
You are in luck! I just did a full on DIY How to Build Raised Garden Bed tutorial that just might come in handy. Step by step so you can go on out and build your own!
Hi Mavis. I highly recommend the movie “Batkid” currently playing on Netflix. It is the sweetest movie about a young boy’s Make-A-Wish to become batman for the day and how the entire city of San Francisco made it so very special for him. This is such a feel-good, joyful movie. Check it out!

Oh, Mona. What are you getting me into? I just watched the trailer and I’m already bawling like a baby. I’m putting it on my Friday Night at the Movies watch list. And I’m buying tissues in bulk!
Did I miss what the red spot that was on Lucy’s belly turned out to be?
~Flo
It went away by the next day so I’ll never know. I think it must have been a little bug bite or something, but she seemed like crazy ol Lucy, and the spot went away quickly, so I’m not really concerned. Thanks so much for checking on her, though. So sweet of you!
Hi Mavis–wondering how the zero waste is going. Very inspiring to see how much you’ve reduced.
~Addie
Honestly, my almost zero waste project is going much better than I anticipated. It’s amazing how much stuff can be recycled when you stop and look at the bottom of every package. I’m still finding we toss about a quart size baggie of trash away each week, but I’m okay with that considering last year at this time we were hauling a garbage can of waste to the curb each week. This is one of those quirky challenges I’m so glad I started and I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop!
I know this is a strange question, but I’m in the market for a good cutting board and wondering if you have a favorite. I’ve just always used the cheap ones from Ikea but they don’t last long. Care to share?
~Sam
I couldn’t share just one because you need both wooden and non: Norpro Cut-N-Slice Flexible Cutting Board or the OCD Cutting Board. You can’t go wrong with either one. Of course, if you have OCD tendencies like me, you know which one you should buy!

Hi Mavis! Love love love your blog. After reading for a couple of months the itch to start my own garden took over and my boyfriend and I built four garden beds. It has been my greatest joy besides my two pups and my new love.. CHICKENS! I saw your chicks this year, loved them and then saw them at the store when picking up dog treats, the rest is history. Brought home two Amerucana’s. I’m wondering what did you do to train Lucy to love them so much? I’ve introduced my dachshund to them which didn’t go very well but I also have a chocolate lab and am afraid to introduce them.
Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks for giving us this awesome blog and any advise you can offer!! :o]
