I can’t believe that is the final month of summer already {well, at least by the back-to-school calendar}! This summer flew by for us. Luckily, I still have at least until October to get my hands in the dirt and grow the heck out of stuff. I am loving having this new yard to occupy my time, and with the fence installed snoopervising has gone done by about 80% so it’s very zen like in our back yard. Just me, Lucy, my headphones and the awesome smell of dirt. Who could ask for more?
Seeds to Start Indoors in August
I am going to start more lettuce indoors this month. It’s still too hot to get it to germinate outside. If you have a growing season that lasts into October, you still have about 90 days of growing season left, so start cooler weather tolerant seeds indoors and transplant them into your garden later this month or early next month.
What I Plan to Plant Outside This Month
Truth be told, I may chance it in my shadier areas and direct sow some lettuce seeds. I plan to plant another row of carrots, turnips and beets too. I’ll probably also do some bok choy as well. Plus, I’m going to make a plan for my full fall garden this month, so standby on those details.
Vegetables to Harvest This Month
Everything! This is the month for tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, beans, cucumbers, onions, oh my! The list goes on. At the old house, I loved this month because I usually just strolled right on by the produce department at the grocery store. It feels really self-satisfying to grow your own food and then stuff your face with it.
Houseplants and Bulbs
This is a good month to start planning the bulbs you want to plant for the spring. If you are going to order them online or from a catalog, do it now so that you have them ready when you need them. Tulips, mini daffodils and hyacinth are on my list again for this fall. As for houseplants, continue to water regularly and make sure they get plenty of light.
Basic Yard Maintenance
I am honing my game plan for trimming hedges this fall. I also plan on pulling up spent plants, reseeding the lawn, shopping for perennials from the Home Depot clearance racks. We plan on aerating this month too. I think I am going to move the sunburned Hosta plants from the front yard to the side and back, just to save them–plus sunburned Hostas are kind of an eye-sore.
Indoor Home Maintenance
There’s no way I am spending any more time than I have to indoors this month. There will be plenty of time for that when the weather turns. Plus, I have to soak up some vitamin D-Dr.’s orders. 😉

I love your posts. I haven’t been following you long, but I love everything I’ve seen. You make me want to get a garden growing soon. It’s much too hot here in Texas to be out except for early mornings or late evening. And then the Mosquitos are out. The high temps have been in triple digits for the last few weeks. Since it is humid where I live, it seems much hotter than what the thermometers say.

I too am new to your site and find myself visiting at least once a day. Great job Mavis. I am working on my own project and find your pages so informational. I don’t even HAVE a garden! But I do have a child in college and a 9 year old niece at home, so healthy living, budgeting and organization remain a top priority. When I get my blog up and running I will make sure you’re one of the first to know! I’d be honored to get any feedback from you. Keep Posting!
