I have in fact found the slowest cashier on the planet. And, this is what I will look like when I have no teeth and just have gums to press my lips together. Also, it appears my clothing choices are getting slim and I’m on my way to a rodeo with my bag of bean soup mix from the bulk section. Go fight win.
Do you love Good Earth Tea? Do you have a Winco nearby? Ibotta has a $1.50 rebate on 1 box of Good Earth Tea right now…. That’s makes this magical afternoon pick me up only $0.50 a box!!! Don’t have the IBotta app? Get it HERE.
Do you refrigerate your bread? I was at a friends house the other day and was getting some milk out of the fridge {for tea} and noticed she had a loaf of bread in the fridge. Do you do this? If so why? Wouldn’t it dry the bread out faster?
Honeycomb. What do you do with it? Eat it obviously… but but how do you serve it and what do you serve it with? Inquiring minds want to know.
Winter is over. Well, at least here in the Pacific Northwest anyway. That means I no longer have an excuse to walk around town {or the house} in my cozy boots or puffy coat without looking like a total weirdo. And that’s lame.
How did we remember where we parked in big parking garages or on city streets before we all had cameras on our phones? Did we carry around pen and paper? Did we wander around in circles trying to find our cars? It’s been so long I can’t remember. I gave up carrying around a purse several years ago. These days the only thing in my pockets are my car keys and my phone… with one of those cell phone wallets stuck to the back of it. I could be wrong… but my guess is the big purse thing is on the decline. What do you think? Do you still carry a purse everywhere you go… or am I just weird?
Have a great weekend everyone,
~Mavis

Honeycomb on a cheese platter is great, and some to drizzle on a fresh pear wedge – divine!
Anita says
Hi Mavis,
I had that very question about how to eat honeycomb just last week at the farmer’s market. So, I asked the vendor. He said you can just smear it on bread or toast and eat it, honeycomb and all. He did say that you cannot put the honeycomb in your tea though. I bought some, but haven’t tried it yet.

Jeanie says
I’m intrigued about the honeycomb too! It looks delicious…but I adore honey! I guess for non-honey folks it wouldn’t look half as good.
Bread. No fridge. I don’t know why people do that.
Parking garage…I think I wrote it on a strip of paper that I kept in a giant purse.
Purse. This is a toss up. I have a big carry-all purse that I usually do take everywhere because I like to have a book, notepad, etc., and I don’t like using my I-phone for that stuff. I hate carrying it though and sometimes if I am running in someplace I leave it in my car and carry a wallet.
Sarah says
No purse for me! I might look like a man though, with my phone/wallet shoved in my back pocket!
Pamela says
Of course I carry a purse. A small one. I can’t stuff my pockets with everything I need then go to work. That would be very uncomfortable. I can’t think of one person I work with that doesn’t carry one. Bread in the fridge..very rarely…in the freezer most of the time!
Jennifer says
Just spread the comb honey on warm toast. Yum. Obviously I should start to sell it that way, $30/lb?!? It is time consuming and messy to extract the honey and I sell extracted honey for $10/lb.
Brandy says
I was thinking the same thing!! 30.00/lb?!?!?! Whoa!!
Linda says
I still carry a purse. I still feel the need to carry a lot of stuff with me-tissues, mints, sunglasses, a book.
Jam says
I put bread in the fridge. It lasts longer. A lot longer. Especially when it takes us a while to go through a whole loaf of bread or bag of bagels. It can dry it out a bit, but not much.
Kellianne says
Yep! I’d be throwing bread out all time otherwise. We don’t eat lunches and mostly use it for breakfast/toast anyway. Doesn’t matter so much if it dries out a little.
rachel says
I’m a big cross-body purse carrier. I have a toddler so I need hand’s free carrying to chase him but still need to pack everything including the kitchen sink. #life When I go out doing errands without him, I just grab my wallet and phone and keys though.
I put bread in the fridge. Not always. I did constantly when I lived in Arizona because it was so hot my bread would go bad if it wasn’t in the fridge (bananas too). Now I live in Wyoming and I do it when I don’t think we will eat the bread fast enough. Sometimes we eat a bunch (toast, sandwiches, french toast etc) and sometimes we just have a slice here and there and so I pop it in the fridge to make it last longer. Maybe it’s a placebo but it seems to make me feel better about life.
Michelle says
I also have a toddler, so a purse/bag is a necessity! I typically just carry a bag that has whatever I need in it. And, when I go anywhere without her….just wallet, keys, and phone. ๐
And, the same with the bread. It lasts longer when I put it in the fridge. We don’t always get to it fast enough, so even if it is a little dry, it’s at least edible. Moldy bread not so much!
Rita says
Definitely need a purse when I am away from home any length of time. In fact it’s about time to switch to my spring purse!
sharon says
Bread in the fridge… my sister-in-law gifts us REALLY good bread from a local baker made with all natural ingredients. We live in a high humidity level. Those two combined mean the bread goes moldy faster than we can eat it if its not refrigerated.
Karin says
My Dad and son eat honeycomb spread on toast, wax and all. Bread definitely dries out faster in the fridge but it will last longer without going moldy so I guess it’s personal choice between to two. I choose the counter. I can’t go without a purse. Must carry my sunglasses, regular glasses, keys, advil, nail file, emergency female products, etc…
Pauletta says
I love honeycomb spread on a warm buttered biscuit for breakfast. Yes, I carry a purse all the time. I feel naked without it on the rare occasions that I leave it at home.
Iverna says
When our daughter was tiny, we came home to find a partially eaten loaf of bread scattered all over the kitchen. Moved the bread from the counter to the top of the fridge. Happened again. Kitten loved bread… so as long as we had him, we kept the bread in the fridge.
Julie C says
I used to have a cat that loved bread and I had to keep it in the fridge for that reason, too. At the time, we went through it fast enough not to worry about it drying out.
TX Deborah says
I love Good Earth tea, but have to order it from the factory. No one in my area carries it. : (
As for a purse, yes, I carry a big one everywhere. Well, almost everywhere. I keep a lot of things in there. More than I need, but don’t tell. I took my MIL to her doctor yesterday and weighed my purse. 9 pounds! But I had my IPad in there and a few other things for her, as well as my usual stuff. I need a smaller purse with less stuff in it. I have to go look in my closet to see what I can find.
Alice says
Real bread molds in three or four days. I am the only one who eats it here, so if I make it, it goes in the fridge. If I buy it, it can leave it out. What does that tell ya?
I just grab a hunk of honey comb and chew it like gum. Then, I spit the wax out.
I carry a wristlet or just a credit card and driver’s license in my pocket.
Kristina says
I love Good Earth tea. Did you ever visit the Good Earth restaurant chain before it closed? Very yummy in an 80s health food sprouts and tofu kind of way. I keep bread in the freezer. With the chickies having flown the coop, we just don’t go through a loaf fast enough to keep it from molding before we can eat it.
Gina says
Bread in the fridge. My cat loves bread, and if I don’t hide it, I go to make a sandwich and there are huge holes all over the bag, where he helped himself. We don’t go through bread super fast, and it doesn’t grow mold so fast in the fridge. If it does dry out: croutons!
Honeycomb… I just eat it straight. Yum!
Purse! I love purses! I could care less about shoes, but man, I have to have Purses! lol
Lisa L says
We keep our bread in the fridge. It dries out a tad but makes it easier to spread butter and whatnot on untoasted bread without tearing it. The loaf will last for WEEKS in there.
Good Earth Tea – sshhhhhh. This Ibotta rebate reloads every week. I’ve been getting hubby’s tea for $.48-$.98 for the last couple of months buying one box a week.
Is that really $30./lb for honeycomb? I didn’t know what to use it for but for that price, I think the bees should hang onto it. They will need it much more than I will.
Happy Friday!

Love the picture at the cashier and your description – – – so funny!
I carry a purse everywhere. I have to have my tissues, wallet, keys, phone, hand sanitizer, compact, and lip balm. Too much to stuff in my pockets.
Heather says
Bread in the fridge, I have the cat problem, too. I carry a phone, small wallet and keys with a hankie in cold weather. Love honey and honeycomb…..eat it any way I can. Extremely sad your furry boots and puffy coat season are over. I don’t think there is a thing wrong with your clothes. You are presentable, clean and kind…what more should we ask for?
Bridget P says
I carry a purse when I am out where there is lots of people give me something to hold onto for anxiety, unless hubby is with me then I just grab my change purse and phone.
I still use my memory trick for my car using landmarks I say quietly to myself before going in somewhere and when I come out I see those landmarks and know where my car is.
Jennifer says
Alton brown once said that fridge temps are perfect for stealing bread the fastest. That said, I totally get the cat-eats-bread issue. We used to keep our bread on high shelves for that same reason. I keep homemade bread sliced and in the freezer. In high humidity areas, fridge would make sense.
Indiana says
Refrigeratng any bread product causes it to stale faster – some type of crystallization (very scienc-y) happens. Freezing is best if you can’t use if fast enough! I can’t think of any female I know over the age of 16 who does not
carry a purse. Gotta have lipstick!
Cait says
My gluten free bread goes in the fridge to make it last longer- too damn expensive to let mold. My husbands regular bread goes on the top of the fridge to hide it from the cats. He can eat a loaf so quickly so its never a issue for mold.
I still carry a purse for the most part. Living in NYC its your whole life for the day. Gotta stash snacks. Now I just moved go vt and Im rethinking needing a purse.
Jenny Young says
Aldi has ruined me with super-fast cashiers! If I understand correctly their registers time how long it takes to check out each customer & they can be penalized if it takes too long. Those people work super hard! Then I go across the street to Wal-mart & visit the senior center as each old lady has to examine each item I buy thoroughly before running it across the scanner & asking me detailed questions about what it’s for/how to cook it/on & on. I consider myself pretty close to being an old lady as I’m well into the empty nest & a grandmother…..I just think my time is worth a little effort on their part not to waste it.
When we have bread, it in the freezer. I pull out one slice or roll at a time, defrost about 15 seconds then toast it. So good! I keep tortillas in the fridge. The reasons…we don’t eat bread fast to keep it from going bad.
We used to fight over the honeycomb when I was a kid. My favorite way to eat it was on PB & honey sandwiches or topping the heel of a fresh loaf of homemade bread slathered with butter!

I always use the self checkout at Winco.
KAte says
We keep bread in the fridge, but it’s purely a counter space issue. As in we have no counter space in our tiny rental kitchen but we do have room in the fridge. As long as the bag stayed closed it doesn’t seem to get too stale before we can use it up.
I understand that you can just chew honeycomb like gum and then spit out the wax.
jennifer says
I use the honey and honeycomb to make granola. The wax in the comb helps it to hold better. And the propolis (which is what wax is) has SO many healthy benefits.
Carrie says
Beeswax is actually made from the honey bee’s glands and propolis is made with resin from trees. Propolis is “bee glue” and they use it to seal up or repair areas in their hive.
My partner chews on the wax (do does our dog!). I don’t care for it but I sure love their honey. We have 4 hives at home and just caught a swarm yesterday and put it at my work (I work at a nature preserve).
Marybeth says
I carry a purse because I need somewhere to keep all of my stuff, water bottle, snack, tissues, meds, etc. I do have a wristlet that I use sometimes.
I only keep bread in the fridge in the summer. It gets moldy faster then we use it. We don’t use sliced bread a lot in the summer because the kids don’t have to make sandwiches for school.
Ellen says
I think you look fine….why? Because I dress like you!! If I wear nice clothes, then I don’t feel like I can work around the house or garden and if I decide to do so I sure don’t feel like changing clothes. That’s my reason and I’m sticking to it.
Lisa MTB says
My cat also has a strange and ravenous hunger for bread. We’ve been keeping the bread off the counter since he was a kitten– sometimes in the breadbox, sometimes in the microwave (we don’t use it to reheat food very often), sometimes in the fridge (if we’re eating it slowly).
Teckla says
Bread in the fridge! There is just me and it will mold long before I can get through a loaf, especially since I buy the really good, intensely grain/seed stuff. Somewhere along the line I got into the habit of tying it loosely inside a plastic shopping bag and that helps keep it from drying out so fast. Takes only a second to get it out, then unless it’s for toast, I nuke it for a few seconds on the lowest power setting. Yummy!
I like just popping the honeycomb into my mouth. Then I spit out the wax. Honey is so good!
And, yes, I still carry a purse most of the time. I long ago made a concerted effort to minimize what I carry though. Years ago a friend accidentally dropped her purse on her big toe. BROKE IT! Sounds funny, but hobbling around wasn’t and it was a big lesson for me. Though I use a belly/fanny pack on vacation, garage sailing, etc. Have started looking for a nice cross body bag recently, though.
Love the blog; love the comments!
Janet says
Honeycomb – YUM! Hubby and I love an afternoon snack of green apple, honey comb, and blue cheese. Seriously, try it.
Bread in the fridge – Yes. I do it to keep it fresher longer. While living in arid Arizona we never did. Moved to Georgia and found out bread molds quickly in humidity.
Thanks for writing an enjoyable blog that I can sneak read at work! Lol!
Leslie says
Bread in the fridge: Yep, gets stale faster.
Honey comb: Serve that baby on a spoon, directly to your mouth.
Purses: I like them but hate carrying them.
Karin C says
Bread sits on top of our toaster on the counter unless it’s in the freezer , never have stored it in the fridge it hardens it up and goes stale faster, friends who have a bakery said to store in the counter or freezer if you only use a few slices a day .
Purse , I have a mid size shoulder bag with wallet , my 2 Epi Pens ( Dr says to always have 2 in case one doesn’t work or you need another dose, basic meds like aspirin and I work in health care so back pills , lip gloss , envelope of current coupons, not much really but would feel naked with out it, my mom had those kind you could buy on TV with the 8 gazillion pockets and the clip on key ring in about 5 different couloirs so maybe that’s where I got used to having a purse .
PS your not weird your you ๐
Jennifer says
Bread in fridge because it will mold before we use it all, otherwise. I don’t (and have never) carried a purse…wallet in one pocket, phone in another, keys in front pocket. All my pants have pockets, and I don’t wear dresses…so no problems. Honeycomb on hot biscuits…mmm. And you look great! Of course, you are dressed up in my book..fancier than what I wear to church, even! It’s nice, since I can steal the hubs’ fishing shirts to dress up and I don’t have to ever try clothes on.
Sarah says
Scientifically, bread goes stale faster in the fridge.
Wheat flour, the primary ingredient (along with water and yeast) of bread dough, is packed full of granules of starch. That starch, in its natural state, is largely in crystalline form, meaning the starch molecules are arranged in a defined geometric structure. Once mixed with water to form a dough and baked in the oven at high temperatures, the crystalline structure of the starch breaks down as the starch absorbs water and becomes increasingly amorphous (meaning the starch molecules have no clearly defined structure).
As the bread cools, however, those starches begin to slowly regroup into a more ordered, crystalline structure again, and it’s this gradual return (“retrogradation”) to the crystal state (“recrystallization”) that causes bread to harden and grow stale. This process is so central to staling, in fact, that even bread that has been hermetically sealed to prevent all moisture loss will still harden and turn stale.
The reason a refrigerator is bad for bread: When bread is stored in a cold (but above freezing) environment, this recrystallization, and therefore staling, happens much faster than at warmer temperatures. Freezing, however, dramatically slows the process down.

Bread: usually in the fridge so it doesn’t mold
Purse: Always. Big one for every day, crossbody for the fair, trips, etc
Cashier: I have a knack for picking the slowwwwwwest ALWAYS (makes me CRAZY!)
Pictures of where you parked: I have NO sense of direction. So almost always I try to park in the same area of the parking lot I usually do at that store. And, huge parking lots, I try to ALWAYS go with someone else, because it would turn into a Seinfeld episode with me wandering around the parking garage for HOURS.
Darlene says
Yep, bread always in the fridge. Mine never dries out and seems to last forever. We don’t eat it very fast, so it hangs out in there for quite a while, and it’s never been moldy or dry a single time!
Denise says
Parking lots! I usually park in the same place at the grocery store so I can find my car easy. I have a tiny sports car that likes to hide behind big rigs. Once I was at a mall and couldn’t find my car in the parking garage. I knew which tier I had parked on, so after wandering around panicking I called from the security phone to tell them that my car had been stolen! The lady on the phone kindly asked me if I had looked in the other garage. Sure enough, they had matching garages right next to each other and, lo and behold, there was my little car! What a relief.
Alyson says
My son’s sandwich bread lives in the bread box – he gets through a loaf in a few days. English muffins in the bread box – they last a couple days to a week.
Tortillas in the fridge.
Good bread (sourdough, bakery, home-baked) are sliced and put in the freezer, to be removed a few slices at a time. We mostly like that kind of bread toasted (unless it’s right out of the oven!), so the freezer works.
I carry a big bag with assorted items, but only take a cell phone wallet or wristlet into stores. The big bag goes when I have to sit and wait for a while – doctor’s offices, kids’ rehearsals, etc.
