After visiting New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont on our trip back east last month, we decided to stop over in the coastal town of Newburyport, Massachusetts as we made our way back to Boston. Neither of us had been to Newburyport before and man oh man we LOVED the place. LOVED it! The brick buildings, white churches, the {enormous} walking downtown, the quaint little inns and of course the all the little shops and eateries.
One in particular though, totally stood out. And of course surprise surprise, it was a bakery. 😉
There wasn’t a fancy French pastry to be found at The Buttermilk Company. Nope, just honest to goodness scratch bakery muffins, cookies, bars and cakes. And they all looked magnificent.
The display case was very clean, simple, and stocked full of homemade treats.
I arrived just after the doors opened and picked out a shortbread cookie for the HH and a blackberry hand pie to bring back to the Inn we were staying at. I grew up with those sickly sweet preservative filled Hostess fruit pies and so when I find a real hand pie at a scratch bakery I almost always buy one.
The HH said his shortbread cookie was the best one he has ever tasted and the hand pie I had for breakfast was really good as well. It was the perfect start to the day.
Check out those giant whisk light fixtures!!! Aren’t they cool?
So if you ever find yourself in Newburyport, MA and you’re looking for a sweet treat, pop by the Buttermilk Baking Company. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
Keep calm and eat on,
~Mavis

That looks like a wonderful town. Have you thought about writing about the inns you stay at? Do you ever stay at bed and breakfasts?

So glad you visited one of my favorite places. I have to brag that my husband’s family helped settle Newburyport back in the 1600’s and he still has family living there. We have gone to visit and fallen in love as you have. Next time you are there be sure to visit the Burying Ground on High Street. Sounds strange I know, but it’s a beautiful place compared to cemeteries on the West coast and even has a wonderful wooden swing dedicated to a little girl from her father.

That cake is so simple and beautiful! I think bakeries are like art galleries, amazing and inspiring individual expressions of talent! I’ve also noticed the beautiful chalkboards and often gifted artists in cafés and bakeries draw/write on for their menus the past few years…(I like what the one behind the cake says!)
