Costumes were always a do it yourself project when I was growing up. I always coveted those storebought ones for years. My mother always said “use your imagination…we had to make our own costumes, you can too”. You know how that goes…we walked to school you can walk, kind of thing.
Which I love to do to my children…so they had to come up with their own costumes. I would sew them when they were younger naturally, but we always collected “dress up” clothes in a couple bins. They could work with what was in there. Since it is cold here on Halloween costumes made with jog suits were always great or that could have another layer of clothes underneath and accommodate hats and mittens.
We all sew naturally, I started sewing with the machine in grade school piecing quilt squares with my grandmother. I haven’t made myself a costume in years. My married daughter and her husband have matching crayon costumes now made by her mother in law. They dress their lab puppy up in the bumblebee dance costume my daughter wore when she was about 4. So cute.
Since we live in the country we get almost no trick or treaters, except a couple neighbor children and grandchildren. (And if you do make the trek to our house you get a really nice bag of candy for the effort.) I miss seeing all the fun costumes and the Halloween parade at the children’s grade school.
