Is it just me?
Or do you despise the Costco square milk jugs too?
Sure it may take up less space on the shelves, but even after 4 years of occasionally buying these square jugs, I still haven’t figured out how to use them without spilling milk on the counter. It’s just not worth the $.12 savings if you ask me.
What do YOU think?

In our house, we refer to Costco milk cartons as “tilt and spill”. I used to buy my milk almost exclusively at Costco. Since they switched to these awful cartons, I usually buy my milk elsewhere. I don’t know what Costco was thinking when they agreed to sell this “tilt and spill” milk.
Tali says
ditto every word!
Molly says
We also stopped buying their milk when they switched to the square containers.
Barbara says
I don’t like square containers too…
Theresa says
I don’t know how you are pouring your milk from these containers, but I have to say I have never spilt any milk when pouring from the square milk container. I love these containers because the take up much less space in the refrigerator and fit better because they are square. I read an article stating that the jug was redesigned to facilitate better pouring, so maybe your concern was addressed and eliminated. Milk at Costco is more than a dollar less at Costco than my local grocery stores, and I go out of my way to purchase it there.
Karleen says
I love these cartons. They had them in Alaska. I am now back in Arizona and miss them. We never had any issues pouring them.
J glad says
I hate them because they are really hard to open. It’s hard to get a good grip on the lid.
Karissa says
They are lousy, but try not picking it up from the counter. If I just tilt it without picking up the jug it usually doesn’t spill.
Kim says
It is so weird that you get the square jugs in Seattle area, but Boise still gets the normal containers. I wonder what the reason is???
jenny@birdsandsoap says
My five year old daughter would say, “Mom, we need a Magic Tap.” She is like a walking info-mercial. Apparently you can turn any household container into a tap- no spills, it fits right over your containers, and kids can help themselves! https://www.buymagictap.com/?mid=2828028
Karen Wiegold says
Awesome! Thanks.
Erika says
We still have normal milk jugs at our Costco here in Arizona.
Jen J says
Apparently I am the odd man out. I actually like these containers. In my area (central VA) Costco milk is actually about $0.40 cents cheaper, so it is a little savings. And Karissa said it best, leave it on the counter and tilt it and you have less spillage. Randomly enough, I read an article several years ago about why Costco went to this style of milk carton and it seemed like a good idea to me.
Lori says
Oh.my.Goodness. That’s the same reason we don’t get the milk too. The kids pretty much get their own drinks, cereal, etc. but there would ALWAYS be a spill. I thought it was just the kids but it would happen to me too. Glad I’m not the only one. 🙂

The best money I ever spent was here: http://www.squarejug.com/

This little miracle invention is the perfect thing for the square jugs. No more spills at my house! Just throw them in the dishwasher (top shelf) to clean and reuse. A.MAZ.ING.
Jessica Tsai says
I live in Vancouver, BC in Canada and the square ones are all we have. I would cut the top off, leave part of the handle and use them as growing containers. In the province next to us people can actually recycle the square 4L containers and get 25 cents back!
Tracie says
We stopped buying costco milk because noone in my house could pour it without spilling it either.
Susan says
Haven’t bought Costco milk in years for that very same reason!
Jodie says
We finally came up with a solution for no more pour and spill. We cut a small triangle in the middle of the bottom half of the circle and then poke a small hole in the center of the upper half. The 2nd hole vents the air that would otherwise be trapped. For all of you in your 40’s and above, it’s similar to when juice came in cans and you had to poke two holes in the top with your can openter.
Sarah B says
I RARELY buy milk there because I despise the containers too. I wish they’d just go back, but I understand why they switched!
Sarah B says
PS, you can call Costco’s customer service # and complain. I actually had a buyer call me back one time!

The Walmart near my home sells milk in the same ‘square’ container. Not a good design in my opinion. Sounds like you are not alone on this one.
Cheryl Kimbley says
I must be odd too, because I like them. I get them at Sam’s Club in Indiana. I haven’t had trouble with spillage. They store nicely, and I love re-using them for various dry goods that I store.
Marcy says
Those things make me crazy! Especially with teenagers who seem to think cereal is it’s own food group that must be consumed as fast as humanly possible. Up here at Fred’s milk is $3.49 a gallon and I get two for $5.96 at COSTCO so I just keep getting it at COSTCO.

I”m in Ontario, Canada and we have milk in bags
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_bag
I don’t think you can buy milk in plastic jugs here.
Mavis says
Milk in a bag? I think that is so interesting. I would totally buy milk that way.
jolanta says
my family lives in Lithuania and they have milk in bags too. It is terrible. You have to buy a plastic container to hold the milk bag upright so it would not spill. Then you have to use some sort of snap to close it. It still produces a lot of waste. Glass bottles are still the best idea in my opinion
Saralie says
I have never seen those containers before. We can only get milk in bags at our Costco. (Ontario, Canada)
Lynn says
My kids begged me to quit buying the Costco milk…we could not figure out how to pour into the glass only. The savings is not worth the inconvenience.
jolanta says
we do not have those at Costco on the east coast. We love Costco milk!
Laurel says
VA has the square milk jugs…and I do not like them! However, there are some interesting ways to reuse them posted here that I may have to give a try.
CathyB says
When we moved from Idaho to Alaska that was one of the first things we noticed – those funky milk jugs at Costco. I hate them. I always spill.
Brenda says
Considering I just dumped nearly half a gallon on my newly waxed kitchen floor because of the stupid square container, I’m with the others, not buying Costco milk anymore! I’m still not sure what I’m more upset about…wasting that much milk or having to wax the floor again!
Sally says
I stopped buying Costco milk too! I hate the square jugs.

We’ve been getting these square milk jugs for a couple of years now. Many of the stores here sell them (not just Costco or Walmart, even the regular grocery stores). I haven’t noticed an excessive spillage problem, but it could just be that we’ve just gotten used to them….
Heather S. says
I stopped buying milk there because of the containers. Then I had to get it one time because I just wasn’t stopping at another store, and was so surprised to find out when we opened the box at home, that they had gone back to the original containers. Maybe in the areas where people stopped buying enough milk, they went back to the old way???
Mavis says
Interesting….
James says
I am a frequent Costco shopper but I refuse to buy their milk products in gallon containers because it is impossible to pour the milk without spilling/dribbling on the counter, floor, etc.. Astonishingly poor container design.
David says
I don’t buy milk from Costco. I cannot STAND the container!
Tex says
And I gotta listen to my wife yell at the kids when they spill the milk. My solution is pour the Costco milk into a normal container
Alena says
Adjust to the opening new set of funnel used for dispersing gasoline from gas container. You’ll like it more.
Rick in MI says
I also hate these square jugs. And, frankly, I also think their milk tastes TERRIBLE. To me is tastes like is reconstituted somehow — very chalky with a chemical taste. For the 20 cents it saves us, NO THANKS! Sadly, I keep asking my wife not to buy it, but since she does not drink milk, she sees nothing wrong with it. LOL
Su Yun Chang says
Costco in the San Jose area is selling 2 gallon milk in the new packaging and it spills no matter how gently you try to pour into a cup or glass. Disappointed in Costco for using such a poor design container.
I stopped buying milk from Costco.
Karen says
There is NO WAY NOT to spill the milk in these silly cartons. I have to put them in a bag because they make such a mess in my fridge. I tried transferring them to different containers – but I ended up using much needed space. I won’t buy milk ever again from Costco. I also have been noticing that their ‘big’ sizes are shrinking . . . .
