Quote of the Day “Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else.” ~ Les Brown
Hello Thursday!
Okay, so apparently according to your comments…. Horse manure is out. 😉 Thank you for your tips on Gypsy moths as well. And, I suppose only time will tell if Harriet is a quince or an apple tree but this whole discovering what’s in my backyard thing is still pretty cool if you ask me. Because really, what fun would it be if we knew all the answers, right?
Today, it’s Thursday and it’s going to be AWESOME. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Mavis don’t give up on the horse manure. We have used it with great success. Designate an area to let it age. Ask your HH to use the “tractor” to turn the pile and then put a sheet of black plastic over it. the heat of the composting added to the heat of the plastic will produce a rich fertilizer that should smell just like fresh dirt. Put it on the top of your garden this fall and let mother nature do the rest. Come spring you can till in the organic material in or rake it out. the nutrients will have seeped in throughout the long winter months.
Its our experience that most farmers and ranchers will not put animals on fields that are sprayed to avoid ingestion of a poison.
I would ask the stable manager what their experience has been.
Keep an eye on your wisteria. The stink bugs (that were brought over about 10 years ago from Asia) love this and will invade your yard. If you see them get an organic pesticide and spray. I would cut all the blooms to avoid poisoning bees and other beneficial pollinators. The chickens wont eat them due to the chemical they emit when threatened. They stink . Good luck

You need to get yourself a few rabbits, their manure is garden ready and doesn’t need to age. Mix some “berries” with water and let it sit for a day and you have an excellent tea for the little seedling plants.

Yes, I was going to suggest rabbit manure as well. We used to just mix it in the soil. It works great with any plants and you don’t have to age it. I remember my neighbor as a kid always having the biggest marigolds because she mixed their rabbit manure into the dirt as she planted. My dad would just turn a little bit into the soil throught the season. The only thing to look out for is if they feed a hay or alfalfa you could get seeds.

using horse manure straight out of the barn for the first time this spring…..seems to be doing great.
Carole says
I hated to jump in there yesterday so here goes. I have always used horse manure from a stable. If it’s a real stable those horses are pampered not field ponies. Never ever had a problem like the stories from yesterday. Had the most beautiful vegetable garden ever. So give it a go especially if your spreading in the fall and letting it over winter. It will be amazing!!
Lynda kling says
Use composted horse manure for your garden…mixed with STRAW, not shavings….I have owned horse for almost 60 years and it’s all we’ve used in our gardens. Do NOT use it right out of the barn!
Katherine says
From all I have read using fresh cow or horse manure instead of composted could lead to e coli.
