Quote of the Day “Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” ~Denis Waitley
So apparently we have a turtle. He wandered into the yard last night. I named him Terrance because Titania just didn’t seem right. Lucy let Terrance know she was the boss of the backyard, in her own special way and they are becoming fast friends. It’s like a mini zoo around here. We have a dog, chickens, wild turkeys, bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks, blue-jays, cardinals, owls, rats, moles, creepy 4 legged critters, black flies, dragon flies, wasps, bumblebees, ticks and I wouldn’t be surprised if a peacock or a bear showed up soon.
What can I say? It’s a thrill a minute around here. Oh, and it’s supposed to be like 90 degrees today and we have no a/c. Monday. Let’s do this!

The no a.c., rats and creepy 4 legged critters sound ominous! You are a true adventurer to me! We had a turtle for a time named Speedy. Our dogs loved watching him. Lucy looks like every day is an adventure for her too.
Susan says
Do you see fireflies? Loved those as a kid! 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
Not yet. But I hope we have them.
Mama Cook says
What’s your “policy” on AC? I know you had it in your last house, but how much do you use it? Our new house has it, but with the breeze that comes up from the valley, we only turned it on twice last summer. Temps are supposed to be higher this week, so I’m always thinking, What Would Mavis Do?
Anne in VA says
You may need to be hyper-vigilant about the rat issue. I’ve been a farm girl my whole life and had all manner of farm animals in commercial quantities. I remember hearing about rats when I was young, but don’t remember seeing them. On 2000 acres, rats weren’t the first thing to notice.
I moved a few miles from my farm when I got married and then got a flock of chickens of my own. I kept having dead chickens and their gullets had been chewed. I conferred with some of my older friends and they said a rat was the culprit. I did several things (which I won’t detail as your timid readers would find harsh and disgusting) to eradicate the problem but I lost a lot of chickens before I could get rid of the rats. They left huge tunnels that collapse and leave holes all over the yard. They chewed on the underside of the hardwood floor boards in our house. The noise was horrible. They are terribly destructive.
We never could figure out where they came from- we don’t have close neighbors and I couldn’t find little trails where they were coming.
There are a variety of types of rats, but ours were 8-12 inches long with long tails. The first time I stumbled on dead one in the yard, I thought it was a possum. Thankfully it was dead.
Carol says
Turtles that appear this time of year are probably femaies, heading to higher ground to lay their eggs. They eggs are like small ping pong balls and if you happen to find the dusty hole she dug, you can keep an eye out for the hatch later this summer.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Carol!!
Carrie says
I was going to say the same thing! If you see an aquatic turtle in the spring it’s probably a female going to lay eggs or just laid some!
Jennifer says
Funny you mention peacock. A peacock showed up at my aunt’s house yesterday. Apparently, it’s been seen in the “neighborhood”. I use neighborhood in quotations because she has 40 acres in the middle of no where, Franklin County, Virginia.
The peacock shows up every now and then and wanders off. No one seems to know where this bird lives.
CSirca says
We just spotted out first turtle too yesterday! I guess we have a snapping turtle in our pond, the thing looks like a mini dinosaur, super long tail and a beak.
Good luck with staying cool today, I hope you get a nice summer breeze throughout the day.
Lauralli says
I think you said last week that you’re going to share about another lobster roll place. I’m eagerly anticipating this information as my family and I are visiting this area right now!
Mavis Butterfield says
Tomorrow I’ll be sharing our trip to Woodman’s of Essex. Go there! It’s great. The go to Rockport Harbor for ice cream.
Lauralli says
Ok, well, I got this a little late and it was 26 miles out of our way…I didn’t think the fam would go for that. But, we did go to Bob’s Clam Hut where I had my second lobster roll since Saturday. I figure I need to try at least another one before I leave NE! Also,I’m thinking Lil’s tomorrow morning or the next. You should join me! Strawberry Banke Museum is on my list too! I can hardly wait!
Mavis Butterfield says
Get the cruller at Lil’s. They make a good London Fog too! And the noodle place next door Anjou is CRAZY good. Also, if you like French pastries, La Maison Navarre in Portsmouth makes THE BEST lime curd tart on the planet earth. Their crepes are really good as well.

Our garden club just had the woman who wrote the LittleHouse on the Prarie garden book ( as you show above) as a speaker last month! Very interesting! She also wrote a book on the gardens of Beatrix Potter, which I bought. I love your book selections!

My brother in law posted a picture of a turtle laying eggs in their gravel driveway a week ago. They put a red cone there so they don’t run over the eggs.
