Quote of the Day “If you can’t be a good example, then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.” Catherine Aird
Hello and Happy Wednesday. This little stinker had a pedicure yesterday and is apparently a “level 3” according to the veterinary staff. And that comes with a hefty price tag. $20! We have tried and tried to do Lucy’s nails ourselves, we have even tried massaging her little paws to get her used to having them touched but she doesn’t want any part of it. So every 6-8 weeks we have to fork over $20 to have 3 people wrangle her and do her nails. The price you pay for love! 😉
Today is supposed to be a little cooler with maybe a few sprinkles tonight… How’s the weather in your neck of the woods? Any rain in the forecast?
Stay AWESOME, and have a great day!
♥ Mavis

re: but she doesn’t want any part of it.
Try that with a 110 pound rottweiler. 🙂 Over the years he’s accepted the pedicure outrage, but he doesn’t like it.
From the time they’re little bitty puppies we get them used to us touching any part of their body, especially their paws. Most of the time they grow up and think nothing of pedicures, but every so often we get a dog that simply doesn’t like his paws touched.
Come to think of it, I’m like that too. 🙂
Leanna Thompson says
Haha! Try it with a pig. (Over fed thus over grown pot-bellied) Remember those days when they were the pet to have? My dad had one and the vet had to make house calls to sedate then trim hooves and tusks.
Carrie says
My pup is the same way. I started trimming her nails at 8 weeks old and the first 2 times she was okay with it and after that she refused to sit still and would bite me. She continues to runs and hides when I am clipping my own nails. I take her to Petco for nail trims. It’s $10 with clippers and $15 for dremmel. I found out the dremmel is much better for my dog.

Your selection of books is always spot on with info I am looking for. Are you reading my mind, Mavis?
Tami says
If she likes to fetch and you can find a long driveway, sometimes you can work their nails down that way. If they come to a skidding stop to catch the ball, the driveway acts like sandpaper and wears down their nails. After years in the pet industry it’s the only “passive” thing I’ve ever seen that can be effective. Glad you have a vet that works with you and the she can handle it being done by. Best wishes!

The zucchini cake looks amazing! You said your family didn’t notice it had zucchini… I’m wondering if you can see the veggie pieces in the cake? The reason I ask is because *ahem* SOMEONE in our house does not approve of veggies in baked items. (He likes the taste of carrot cake but doesn’t like that he can see the colorful bits.) :p I’ve previously had success by cooking and pureeing the vegetable instead of grating, but do you think I might be able to get away with grating this time?
Mavis Butterfield says
Our grater has 3 size options… Try it with the smallest. 😉
AJ says
Thanks! I’ll try it and see if he notices.

Never met a pet I couldn’t trim nails on, even those that don’t like it.
I currently have two cats (both rescues, one we think was feral – got him at 5 months) and an Eastern Fox Squirrel.
The cats take two people — hubby holding, me trimming, but I manage the squirrel on my own. She’s almost 2 years old now and doesn’t fight QUITE as much as she once did!
Heidi says
What a naughty puppy with her nail trimming. Luckily my 5 month old puppy tolerates nail trimming because I do it every 7 to 10 days. The second I hear nails tapping on the wood floors, out come the clippers. I only need to take off a tiny bit so maybe that puts less pressure on the nail and is more comfortable for him?
I think $20 is a bargain if she is that difficult. I also have no issue with paying for anal gland squeezing. One of our old dogs had real issues with this and when the vet tech offered to teach me how, I said no thanks. I’ll find that $20 somewhere!
Julie C says
I feel the same way! My groomer charges $25 for a shampoo & condition, nail trim, and anal gland expression for my little pug. The anal gland thing alone makes it worth the money to me.

It’s been hot and humid in SW Michigan. We had a round of storms this weekend that knocked out power to over 100,000 + homes. Luckily we didn’t lose ours. We had strong winds again today that took out numerous branches on a walnut tree by the house. I love that tree for it’s beauty and shade but, unfortunately, the damage is pretty bad and it will need to be removed. Sad but better than it falling on the house (it’s huge!).
I love chocolate zucchini cake! It is so good!
Lindsey says
My dogs are 145 pounds and 160 pounds (and are the runts for their breed!). They hate having their toes touched so after one session of me and my husband wrestling a dog on our bed to try and cut his nails, we gave up and now outsource the job! Cheap at any price!
Patty P says
$20 for a nail clipping isn’t bad, considering when our Rottie needs his nails clipped we need to give him a sedative at the vet’s office and it costs well over $100. Not sure what his issue is, since we started clipping his nails weekly when he was a puppy. He got to the right weight and told us that enough was enough and now we have to pay for it to be done. Ugh.
