Quote of the Day “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Hello Friday! I am happy to report that Miss Lucy had an excellent visit with the vet, behaved while she had her nails done AND got a cookie from the staff on her way out the door. She’s happy, I’m happy, life is good.
On the agenda for today: Make a second pass with Manny the Mantis tiller with the hopes of getting our huckelberry blue potatoes planted today. Giddy up!
Enjoy the weekend,
♥ Mavis

I was very excited about the Le Crueset deal but sadly it’s only 20% off not $200. Just fyi, it basically only covers shipping.

Regarding your new yard and garden, I would recommend that you only pull out what you absolutely know is a weed or is a plant you don’t like. Two decades I moved from the city to an acreage (40 acres) and made the mistake of pulling out a lot of plants that I later regret. If I could it over again I would go through your first garden season with everything intact, or at least growing. Then you can decide what you want to keep and what you don’t want.
As for deer, that is a problem for most people living in the country. Some people say that hanging a bar of Irish Spring soap on a few trees deters the deer. A friend of mine actually buys pigs blood (at a german delicatessen and soaks wooden clothespins in the blood that clips it to some of the branches of her cherry tree and says it works very well. I live in northwest Canada, and we have all kinds of wildlife going through our acreage. Moose are the worst because they are soooo HUGE and just chop on anything. We’ve lost several trees because of their desire to eat. Wishing you great success and total enjoyment working in a rural setting.

I am 99% sure both of those are weeds! The second one that looks similar to a black eyed susan has got me before with no luck, except disappointment bc it’s a weed. Black eyed Susan’s are generally prolific. So they should be more around and if pulled have some what of a “runner” as a root. So if you pull that and you’re root system is shallow I’d say it’s a weed. I’d say the top one is as well, but let the other gardners chime in as well. I believe you’ve got a hydrangea there, especially if those dried sticks are “cane” like and they’re by themselves. Don’t cut them as I’m sure you already know. If they’re some type of Lilly the stocks will be more like dried up paper. Hope that helps.
