Quote of the Day “One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by.” ~ Jeannette Walls
Hello Tuesday! Does anyone have any recommendations for a cooling mat for dogs? Today it’s supposed be like 95 degrees outside. And inside? Well, you know… a mere 80-82 with just a taaaaaad bit of mugginess. Good times. Goooood times.
Also, I may have mentioned this before, but I have a feeling winter is going to be my favorite season here in New England. All 6 months of it. 😉
Keep calm, stay cool, and carry on.
♥ Mavis

I saw that Aldi has pet cooling mats for sale for about $10. We are having at heat wave here in Harrisburg, PA. Here are some tips I posted to help keep outdoor bunnies cool.
Keep your pets cool! Heat advisory in the Harrisburg area and beyond. Bring your pets inside if possible. Make sure outside animals have lots of water and shade! For our outdoor bunny friends:
Make sure your rabbit’s hutch and play area are in the shade. …
Give your bunnies a trim. …
Fill large 2 liter soda bottles with water, freeze them and place in hutch
Give your bunnies cool ceramic tiles to lay on
Lay wet towels on top of their hutch
Use solar fans!
For our bigger furry friends, Aldi has the chill gel pet lounge pads on sale for about $10.
In addition please put out bowls or trays of water for the bees and birds!

We’ve had two heat waves already (heat index from 95-102) which we don’t see that often in our neck of the lakeshore before July. (Breeze comes off Lake Michigan for most of June – makes great lake fog and comfy days.) Hubby loves heat and humidity whereas I turn into a slug and turn on the AC. Fall is my favorite season – comfortable days, cool nights and gorgeous colors (not just trees but also the colors and textures of bushes, grasses, etc). Best time of the year to hop in the car with a camera and wander around.

Not sure about any particular cooling mat, but just thought this a neat idea. Our grocery stores now have a kennel with a cooling mat outside the store for anyone to use so that a dog is not left in the car in extreme temps. We had heat indices of 114 last weekend.

Curious minds want to know why you don’t have/get AC??

The brick floor in your office may be cool enough for Lucy to stretch out on.

This is the cooling mat that i bought FOR MYSELF! (Well, I bought a one for XL dogs…) In the midst of hot flashes, I was viewing the cooling mats for dogs with jealousy, and thought why not?! I purchased one for myself and keep it by my bed for those nighttime hot flash sleep disturbances. OH FOR GOODNESS, what a lovely relief!
So I can say, from personal experience, they work well. Nothing magic about it — you just lay on the pad which has gel inside. The cooler pad helps your heat to dissipate until you and the gel become a similar temperature, so to speak. When the pad doesn’t feel cool anymore, you just need to let it sit at room temp for a while, and it’s ready to cool again.
Some of the low ratings on Amazon come from people whose puppies chewed it. I don’t have that problem 🙂 and would recommend it to Lucy and any other dog — or human!

Do you run a dehumidifier? I know we used one in my parents basement when I was growing up. It kept mold/ mildew at bay and it made the space feel significantly cooler just getting humidity out of the air.

My mom had shih tzu’s and by accident we found out Wiggins loved laying on the blocks of ice we would pick up for the coolers when camping. So from then on Mom would use one of her old tupperware containers that one of us kids lost the lid to to make huge ice blocks. She would put them in a boot mat for Wiggins to lay on, over, beside when ever there was high heat on its way. With that fancy new freezer you could make quite a few for Lucy Girl!

My pup has a double coat so I bought a cooling mat for her last summer. She laid on it nicely in the living room but when I put it in her crate while I left I came back to it all chewed up and gel everywhere! I’d recommend them if you can supervise.
I also saw them at Aldi this week.

Our dog lies on the tiled floor in the bathroom in the summer, he has a wool coat and hates the heat and living in Scotland, fortunately for him we don’t get heat that often. However at the moment we’re getting ridiculously hot days which we’re not at all used to and I met a fellow dog owner on a walk and wondered why her dog had a coat on. Turns out its a cool coat. It felt wet to touch but her dog absolutely loves it and she said its made a huge difference to his energy levels again. We considered it then went for the wet dish towel instead! We draped a wet dishtowel over our dog and he happily wore it for ages! Cool coats for dogs are available at Amazon in case you’re interested.

I bought the cooling mat at Aldi yesterday. Put it in the crate with one of our dogs last night…..today gel everywhere. Argh! Do not use if Lucy will paw/gnaw at it. Should have just thrown a ten dollar bill in the air and watch it float away. ….sigh.

I don’t know about cooling mats. Our last dog had congestive heart failure and was not supposed to get overheated. At that time our house in puyallup did not have AC. I bought one of those portable air conditioners that you can rollaround at Costco. I put it in the master bedroom and on the hot days I would put her and her bed and toys in there. As it turned out we used it When we had some hot nights in July. It really did the trick. We now have AC. If heat affects Lucy’s Addison’s you may want to consider one.

The portable ac units by delongi sold by costco are amazing. You just need to put the hose outside the window. The unit sits on the floor. Cools a large area. Try putting some ice in lucy’s water bowl. Freeze half-filled water bottles, cover with a towel and put in her bed. This is how i fell asleep when it got too hot during a time when our air conditioner broke.

I use K&H cooling bed and have for years. My double coated papillon hated it, but my pom loves it. It is filled with water and I just leave it on the living room floor. The pom is on it all the time.

We dont have a kiddie pool anymore and it hit 95 so i filled a clear store tub w/ 5″ of water for my feet. Well the dogs started drinking out of it and then the Mastiff put his 2 front paws in. I Had a tub w/ cold water. NOw he does. We dont have a cooling mat but we put ice cubes in their water bowl, freeze wash clothes and mop them. Also you can spray them w/ a water filled spray bottle
