Quote of the Day: “A house without books is like a room without windows.” ~ Horace Mann
Ahhh Thursday. So yesterday, I had to chase a wild turkey out of the garden, that was interesting. And then I got a text from Mrs. HB’s mom who {bless her heart} offered to make the HH and I both mosquito hats so we don’t get eaten alive. Wasn’t that sweet? So hopefully by next week, I’ll be able to garden in peace. Well, kinda of. I did see a little bunny in the front yard this morning, and with the wild turkey problems and finding moles belly up in the lawn {thanks Lucy!} the wildlife situation is starting to get a little interesting abound here. Note to self: Research 10 foot tall garden fence.
In other news, it was a high of 89 at our place yesterday and yet inside the house it was a mere 67 degrees at 5pm! Giddy up. Those pilgrims, they sure knew how to build things. Andrea left a comment though saying “I currently live in a small house with plaster walls. It takes about 3 days of 80+ degrees for things to really heat up inside.”
I’ll keep you posted. 🙂 Thursday, LET’S DO THIS.
♥ Mavis

As a fellow New Englander, I can commiserate with the wildlife. We have tons of turkeys strutting through the neighborhood most mornings, the bunnies are everywhere in the evening and even the squirrels were chattering like crazy this morning. I live about 12 miles north of Boston in a neighborhood and routinely find deer tracks in the garden, along with plenty of skunk and groundhog sightings. It really is a battle, and by August, it feels like a jungle with the weeds and humidity. Still love it, though! Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else 🙂

When we moved 3.5 years ago, the first thing we did was clear the garden area, the next thing we did was build an 8ft deer fence that had hardware cloth buried 18″deep down into the ground. I refused to plant anything until that was done. We have had minor issues with squirrels and chipmunks, but thankfully, deer, moles, voles, groundhogs and rabbits are kept out. I’d move a fence solution to the very top of the HH’s honey-do list.

Regarding the air conditioning- My grandmother rarely used the window units in her house. The house was built around 1850 and had porches on all sides, plenty of shade trees and plaster walls. She opened the windows and doors early each morning and shut them by about 11 am, keeping out the heat of the day. Her house was always a pleasant temperature. She did have a couple of fans that looked like an ottoman in different rooms to stir the air.
Her kitchen was a different story. It was always miserably hot. She didn’t keep the same routine there. Windows stayed up all day and the fan blowing. She was always cooking, canning and preparing for the future.
I live in a similar house now and we use a couple of window units to keep it comfortable. We aren’t quite as conditioned to the heat and humidity anymore as folks were years ago. We definitely need the a/c at night in the bedrooms.
I work outside the home and am not there each day to keep up the routine of opening and shutting the windows and doors, but it does work. Its hot here in Virginia today, but when I get home this afternoon the main part of our house will be comfortable.
I think you will find the humidity requires you to have an a/c at least at night. Sticking to the sheets is awful!

I live in a 1850 Antebellum home with 12 foot ceilings and a center hall. We don’t need to use the AC until it’s consistently above 85°F /and when the humidity sets in. …Summer humidity is the worst thing about living down South. Dry heat I can stand, living in a jungle is an entirely different beast.

Hi Mavis, so….. turkeys can fly. Not for long distances, mind you, but they do perch and sleep in trees as well. Like a chicken or a peacock. I would be surprised to see them clear a 8 or 10’ fence for the fun of it but they are pretty silly birds. Turkey eggs taste great though!
It’s been a lot of fun reading of your adventures at the new place. Thank you for bringing us all along! Have fun with your fence.

I saw the older thermostat. We just changed ours out and our utility had some great rebate deals (ComEd). I would imagine yours probably do too. For example $100 off of Nest and several others.
