Yesterday I was craving split pea and ham soup again. I don’t know what it is about winter but all I seem to want to make lately is soup. I pulled up some carrots to add to the pot and let me tell you Bob, it was nice to get outside for a few minutes and play in the dirt.
Pulling up carrots inspired me to plant a few seeds. Yes, I know I’m a bit early. 😉 But I couldn’t help it. Any anyways, once the cabbage get big enough I can plant them outside in my stock tanks and throw on some row covers. Thank goodness for grow lights. They take the edge off of winter.
Poor Lucy puggle. She is a wreck. With all the delivery trucks passing by she is getting a serious workout running back and forth looking out the windows. She knows Santa is coming and totally flips out if a truck does not stop at our house and drop something on the porch.
Yesterday I pulled out my baking dishes and labeled them with the foods I’ll be making for Christmas. So far I am up to 7 side dishes and 2 desserts to go with our ham. Why bake for one day when you can bake 5 days of leftover meals, right?
I’m curious.
- How much do you spend on a bottle of shampoo?
- How long does your bottle of shampoo last?
A couple of months ago I was able to get 14 big bottles of Suave 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner for like $9 at Target because they were running some sort of gift card promo and I had a coupon. Clearly, I don’t buy high end products for my hair and the HH doesn’t care because well, it’s not like he’s trying to impress anyone or has McDreamy hair or anything. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally used up a bottle.
I actually called him at work to ask if he was still using shampoo because it took so long to go through a bottle.
So now I’m on a mission to find out how long 22.5 ounces of shampoo lasts us.
This is my life people. It is so freakin’ exciting. Some days, I have to pinch myself.

OMG, you are so funny. Your life sounds as exciting as mine does.
I buy shampoo about once a year – Aveda brand – at $40 for a large bottle. I seem to be sensitive to the ingredients in every other brand. This is the only one I’ve been able to use without a reaction…

If you find it takes “forever” to use up the bottles, you could donate a few to a nursing home. I know the residents enjoy having something different to use. The same goes for soaps, lotions, and toothpastes.

Great Idea Charleen!

I think about these things too! I have very curly super dry hair so I don’t use shampoo very often. In fact I can’t remember when I shampooed last? Over a month I’m sure. I do “wash” my hair with water in the shower daily and use Suave humectant conditioner every day. I buy the big bottle and I’ve been meaning to try to figure out how long is lasts. I am now inspired.

I use Pantene, wait for the sale at CVS and a $5 off three coupon and maybe have some extrabucks to throw on it as well. If I pay more than a dollar a bottle, I figure I’ve done something wrong. I also stock up on shampoo etc etc and have about a year’s worth on hand at all times. For the zombie apocalypse or something, I’ll want to have clean hair.

I wondered how long you stuck with the “no-poo” thing. I tried it, but shampoo was just easier to use.

I’ve been doing this for 3 years now, and I would never go back. The amount of money I save is crazy and my hair’s never been healthier or softer. 🙂

We buy a bug bottle of shampoo at Sams Club. It lasts us forever bease hub and I have short hair, so maybe a penny size amount for me. So maybe 2 bottles a year?
Earlene says
Man, I can’t spell. So sorry! It’s a big bottle and it’s because we have short hair! My apologies!

I purchase shampoo based on the brand/sale which the sizes range from around 10oz to 13oz in a bottle I believe. Retail generally for 4-5$ each before sale/coupons. I go through a bottle about every month, but I shampoo and condition every single day due to my hair being very baby fine. I have tried some of the lower priced shampoo’s but they don’t seem to show good results on my hair for daily use. After savings my goal is to pay 2.50-3$ per bottle.

It’s quirky stuff like this that makes me enjoy your blog sooooooooooooooo much!
I don’t think most people “get” me, but you would.
(By the way our trip to Monticello in September was superb. Thanks for the encouragement to go in September.)

Hi Mavis & everyone ~
One bottle of the AUSSIE VOLUME SHAMPOO WITH PUMP in a 29.2 fl. oz. bottle will last me at least 6 months … my hair is thin; so I don’t use a lot. It generally costs right around $5.00 … sometimes I have a coupon for it. When styling my hair I use AUSSIE VOLUME STYLING MOUSSE … I think it’s awesome … it’s a 6 oz. bottle and costs around $3.50 and also last me for at least 6 months. I don’t like their hair spray at all and generally use WHITE RAIN HAIR SPRAY in a pump bottle.

Months! I don’t know for sure, but the one I’m currently using is going on 6 months+. Since I’m a widow and only shampoo once or twice a week, it lasts a long time. I usually buy Suave, without conditioner, as cheaply as I can (and stock up with sales) and even though I sometimes use more than needed, it still lasts a loooonnng time! I’m lucky that I don’t need anything expensive for my very fine, straight hair!
Really enjoy your humor and all the great tips you share, plus all the great recipes! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Mavis, here’s my story about a good deal on shampoo. Almost two years ago I was in Sam’s Club in the shampoo aisle. One of the workers was there and she showed me some shampoo they were getting rid of: three large bottles of kids Suave shampoo for 93 cents. Yes, 93 cents, 33 cents a bottle! Since I’m not picky about my shampoo anymore, I grabbed it. Those three bottles lasted me over a year and a half. Best deal of my life!

Just dated a recently started bottle of Suave, something I’ve been meaning to do but inspired by your post. Loving you technique the the labeled dishes and cooking for an extended period of time. Merry Christmas Mavis!

Funny you should talk about shampoo. I’ve been working where personal care items, vitamins, cleaning supplies, toilet paper & cleaning supplies fit in your budget. You talk about personal spending and you show us groceries, but where do the other items fall in your budget?
Btw, thanks to you I’m now rolling my toothpaste along the edge of my vanity to get all of the paste to the top! Thanks for so many great tips!

Oh, my goodness, I date EVERYTHING! I always want to know how long it either has been in the frig or closet. It doesn’t matter if it’s the jumbo Costco shampoo or Grey Poupon mustard, it gets dated. My husband just shakes his head at me 🙂
Lynn says
I do too, Chris! Dog food, garbage bags, dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent, etc etc, they all get a date. My “inquiring mind” just wants to know how long they each last! And, my husband also used to shake his head at me, but now, he dates items as well:) Let us know how long your shampoo lasts, Mavis, and we can compare notes!

I go through a lot of conditioner. I have really thick, coarse, dry hair. Especially in the winter when the air is dry. I look like Roseanne Roseannadanna with out it.
