Last year, in an effort to give gifts that people could actually USE, I decided to give all of my gardening peeps tins of seeds. I liked the idea because giving what I call “filler” gifts {gifts just for the sake of having something to give} has always bugged me. I want my gifts to be personal, something that I love, something that I hope they will love {and use}, and something that is unique. It’s not a tall order, or anything!
The tins went over really, really well. I made sure the seeds were custom picked for each individual person, and then I packaged them in a re-usable tin. If you have seeds you collected from your garden yourself {my chive seeds were from my garden}, it makes it all the more personal.
If you have any gardeners in your life {teachers, neighbors, co-workers}, I totally recommend giving these.
You’ll need:
- Spice tins
- Seeds
- Twine
- Labels
Directions:
These are pretty crazy directions, so stick with me: Put your seeds into the tins. Label the tins. If you want to get crazy, flip the label over and provide planting instructions. Gift the tins.

This was our first year in our new house with a (big) yard, so I got a late start on everything, but next year I plan on gifting dried herbs. They are so darn expensive at the store, and I figure mine are (basically) organic herbs and I can’t wait to give my dehydrator a great workout! I’m going to plant lots and lots of the common ones – parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme (of course), and oregano, and marjoram. Depending on my garlic harvest I may try to dehydrate that too!!! I love the tin idea though – I was thinking of buying the empty spice jars, but I may like tins more 🙂
