Good things come to those who wait, right? Well if you’ve never made real baked beans before {as opposed to opening a can} then you simply must give it homemade baked beans a try. Your taste buds will thank you. Trust me. I made these beans last week in my beloved crock pot and they turned out delicious!
Perfect for BBQ’s, camping, and picnics.

Hoo Boy. My family has positively BANNED me from baked beans after a memorable camping trip with friends years ago! I ended up sleeping in the car to keep the peace. Har!

This is same recipe as my parents used to make when I was a kid! Except they had a baked bean crock…heavy ceramic pot that they made them in, not a crock pot. And NEVER had any left over. What I would like to know is do they freeze well? You know, the beans not getting mushy. My son wants me to make and freeze him a ton for when he goes camping next month and inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

I freeze them all of the time since we are empty nesters. They do great as long as they are thawed before reheating.

I made these for dinner tonight as I just happened to have all the ingredients. EXCELLENT! I’ve never made baked beans before but will never buy canned again!

Stupid question here – do I cook the bacon before putting it in the crockpot? I promise I’m a good cook and I would think it should be cooked but I’ve never done this recipe before.
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Lisa, my bacon was cooked before I put it in the crock pot.

What kind of molasses? Real black strap molasses?

These are so good. The only problem I had, was after 8 hours on low the recipe was no where near done. Ended up turning the crock pot to high and cooking an additional 5 hours. Maybe it is a sign that I need to get a new crock pot?
Anyone else have this trouble? Curious minds want to know.

Sometimes when the beans have sat around too long before using, they do not cook up. Had that happen to me once. After cooking for almost 2 days…gave it up. An elderly friend told me it was prob because the beans were old.

Thanks, Lynda with a smile!
That’s good to know. I bought these at the store for this recipe. Guess they sat at the store, discouraging ๐ I didn’t notice a packing date on the bag, guess I should have checked the bulk aisle.
It’s a relief that it is the beans and not the crock pot, mine has sentimental value.
Happy 4th!
