This past week we found quite a few treats in the fresh produce boxes we picked up from Mr. Produce Guy. Now that summer is right around the corner I have feeling we’ll be seeing lot’s of watermelon and tropical fruits in the scrap boxes we pick up every week for our backyard chickens.
Slightly bruised pears don’t bother me one bit.
I simply turn them into smoothies. Pineapple + Pears+ Ice = Perfection.
$20 worth of free produce plus a boatload more for my chickens, heck ya I’ll take it!
It all looks the same once it’s sliced up and in the refrigerator.

If it doesn’t smell and only has a few bad spots hell woman its treasure. food cost to much now a days to just toss it because of a expiration date , you go girl!

I don’t dumpster dive, get food for free from grocery stores, or currently grow my own food right now, but I do try to avoid wasting vegetables that I do buy. If I have store bought vegetables in my refrigerator that I am not likely to use right away (except lettuce or radishes), I dry it in my food dryer. I have mushrooms, onions and green peppers drying in my food dryer right now.

I have one grocery store that actually puts their “ugly” fruit and vegies in separate mesh bags on a separate rack. I’ve been buying those: apples, bananas, grapefruit, potatoes – both white & sweet – whatever is available. Also, once in a while they have packaged salads, spinach with mark downs. I always feel gleeful when I get there in time to snag some. Who cares if they’re pretty or not – taste the same.

I totally agree. My food coop does the same thing (only no mesh bags), and I always head over there first to see what has been reduced. Often it is perfectly good but maybe not as pretty stuff. As you say, cut off any bruised spots, and it tastes the same.
