I have watched Alone in the Wilderness on PBS at least 20 times {no joke}.
It is soooo well-made, I just can’t get enough of it. I always get a little giddy when I see it’s going to be on. It is about a man, Dick Proenekke, who decides at age 51 to see if he can, well, live “alone in the wilderness” of Alaska. Dick films his adventures himself, and keep in mind, it is done in the 1980’s, so it is a little gritty at times, but he is smart, well-spoken, and resourceful. Every time I watch it, a little piece of me wishes I could go off of the grid and live off the land myself.
If you can’t find it on your local PBS station, Alone in the Wilderness is available on Amazon in both book and video format.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it. Did you love it? Hate it? Can’t wait to watch it over and over?

Hey Mavis, have you ever watched Heimo’s Arctic Refuge? I think it may be available on youtube or the like, similar story albeit a little more modern looking. 🙂 I couldn’t get enough of it, so interesting how he lives with his family in remote Alaska.

I love this show and bought the DVD from PBS last year. I’ve also watched this a ton and often fall asleep to the soothing sound of Dick’s wilderness adventures! In fact I just got Alone in the Wilderness 2 and watched it a few weeks ago. He builds his storage cache in the second. 🙂

Love, love, love this movie! My husband and I always feel very small compared to all the things this guy can do. It’s inspiring at the same time. Enjoy it!

I LOVED that book!
I read it while we were canoeing down a usually-dry creek in outback Australia and reading about what that amazing man achieved in the wilderness, whilst being in a different kind of wilderness … made it very special.
Reading about him cooking sourdough pancakes for breakfast each morning made me start my own sourdough ‘mother’ to use for pancakes. Yum!
Thanks sharing the video, Mavis.

This is one of my all time favorite movies too! I made a big pledge to PBS so I could get the DVD. I would love to visit his cabin. I am sure it’s still standing strong. If you can ever find a book called “Lost in the Taiga”, it’s another fascinating read about living in isolation. Thanks for reminding me about this movie. Gee, I think I’ll go pop it into the DVD player right now….

My husband and I stumbled across that movie on pbs one time and were spellbound. I was impressed but then he made his own spoons!?! Amazing!

My dad watches this with my daughter’s (6 & 7) all the time. They are captivated by it and ask to watch it. It might take me a while to warm up to it.
