After The Girl and I watched Pretty in Pink last week, I casually mentioned that the movie was part of a whole group of “brat pack” movies from the 80’s. The Girl asked me, “What’s the brat pack?”. I stopped dead in my tracks. Am I that old? Have I failed my own child that I have never mentioned the brat pack before? Could The Girl rat her hair if her life depended on it?
I really questioned all of the important stuff in life on this one people. That’s why this Friday, we will once again be revisiting an iconic 80’s brat pack film. It’s my duty as a mother to give The Girl culture, I take it very seriously. That’s why we are going to watch The Breakfast Club.
Do you remember this one? How long has it been since you watched it? More importantly, which character did you identify with? {Very deep question, I know, take your time. Ha!}

Don’t forget 16 Candles!

I agree! You must watch 16 Candles. Every girl must have a crush on Jake Ryan!

One of my favorite all time movies. I watched it every weekend in college. I identified with Claire. I was definitely the uptight spoiled rich girl but also with Brian. I wasn’t popular. I was a nerd.

My girlfriends and I had a John Hughes Girl Night last December before the holiday madness took us all. I highly recommend it!

I feel the same way as a Mother it is my solemn duty to provide an education to my children. This includes in our house movies, historical events and equally important music. We have high expectations too you are expected to speak in movie quotes and recognize song lyrics as part of every day conversation. I was mortified one day to learn my son did not know who Neil Young was. I felt like I had raised him in a card board box. What? Not know Neil Young American poet of Crosby, Still, Nash and Young.
Don’t forget St Elmo’s Fire!!!

It was on TV a couple months ago, and I loved it all over again. My favorite is 16 Candles. I identified with Anthony Michael Hall.

I love the 80’s movies. Teenagers will always be the same. 🙂

Oh my gosh! I was just talking about this movie with my girls!! Along with Sixteen Candles and Say Anything. Remember those?! I think we’ll have to see all the classic 80’s movies. Well done mama!

Say anything… I forgot about that one. I used to be totally in love with John Cusack!

Well, you have at least two more Fridays worth of brat pack coming up, 16 candles and St Elmo’s Fire. Could we add Top Gunn to the list even though Tom’s not brat pack? I love where Molly, ‘the princess’ brings out her sushi for lunch! Cracks me up. I think I would have been the nut job.

Love these 80s movies! I introduced my 17 year old daughter to The Breakfast Club recently and she LOVED it! She definitely identifies with the crazy girl – I loved her too, but I was the nerd for sure when I was in high school. My 15 year old is the princess, which makes for interesting sister dynamics in our house!! I also enjoy what I’ll call the ‘revival’ movies, that use the 70s and 80s, like Suddenly 30, The Wedding Singer, and being Australian, can’t go past Muriel’s Wedding!

Last year the show “Victorious” on Nick did a knock off of The Breakfast Club. My son did not get it. I was in high school when those movies came out. I remember watching The Breakfast Club and my friends and I were connecting people from our school to the characters. How about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? My friends worked at the local movie theater so on the weekend I would go and pick them up from work after their night shift so we could hang out. Other friends and I would get there early and watch movies. I think I have seen Ferris Bueller about 1,500 times.

We just went and saw Breakfast Club at a movie theater last night in Portland! It was even on film (not digital).
