Last week when I posted about The Glass Castle, One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Stephanie, left a comment saying I need to check out the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which is currently on Netflix and let me tell you Bob, I am SO GLAD that I did!
A year or two ago I tried reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and could not get into it. And then a few months ago {because people kept going on and on about the book} I tried listening to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on audio book. But that time around it was the narrator’s voice that turned me off and I stopped listening to the audio book after about 30 minutes.
So when Stephanie mentioned the movie was available on Netflix, I decided to give it a THIRD and final try. Well now, the movie, was totally delightful! So much so that my husband ended up watching it with me {and he even pointed out that four of the characters in the movie were from Downton Abbey!}.
So, if you are looking for something to watch this weekend and you have Netflix, whip up a platter of pickety bits and settle in for a delightful movie. It’s totally worth your time.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

OMG! Watched it Sunday!! Loved it! They should have expanded it to a period mini series!
Grab your tissues, popcorn and ice tea – it’s very very good…..and the costuming /swoon/
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes on the mini series!!!

So glad you posted this! I had a hard time getting into the book but ended up liking it half way through and to the end. I have been at a loss with what to watch these days. Thanks!

I read the book several years ago and did enjoy it. I watched it today on Netflix and it was so good!! I may watch it again
Deborah McGeary says
My mom has read the book and told me it was on Netflix. I watched it this week and
It was quite enjoyable.
I’ll have to invite her over and get her opinion.
Janet says
I am going to watch it tonight. Lots of favorite actors in it.
Stephanie says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it so much! I did love the book- I adore epistolary novels in general- and this movie is in my plans for the evening. The costumes alone look gorgeous. Happy to help! 🙂

I’m of the ‘live and let live’ mentality and don’t pay much attention to what other people are doing. Haha, I must be living under a rock! Can you explain what fast fashion and stretchy toddler clothes are?
Also, what is “we’re all the same” being shoved down our throats? What does that mean?
In my defense, I’m old and apparently out of touch. Although, after reading your rant, I’m pretty happy to be there.
Thanks for the movie recommendation! I couldn’t get into the book either.
Deborah says
I mavis might mean work out clothes, like spandex.
In the “winter” I love my stretchy tights and long athletic shirts or light pullover sweaters. Can hardly go back to jeans unless I’m going”out” somewhere. Of course i wear casual dresses to work because it is so much cooler.
Ellie K says
Thanks…yes, same here. I hate jeans, they look terrible and sloppy on me. Casual dresses and skorts all summer long.
Haha! Guess I’m a toddler with gray hair and wrinkles!
Sara says
Super cute movie, my kids enjoyed it too!

I’d not heard of this book or movie until I saw it mentioned online yesterday. My husband and I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! Definitely recommend it. Pretty scenery too.

Solely because I read your blog (and have for many years), I watched “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” tonight. I’d not heard of the book but with so many positive reviews from people I feel are like-minded, how could I not? Loved it! An added plus was seeing so many familiar faces from “Downton Abbey”. Thanks for the recommendation!
Linda says
Thank you so much for this recommendation!!! My daughter and I watched this movie tonight and LOVED it. Beautiful scenery, lovely story telling- hated for it to end!!
Hazel says
It says it’s from the producers of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- that’s great as well, if you haven’t seen it. Favourite line (Maggie Smith’s character) ‘At my age I don’t risk green bananas’.
You’ll like the cast- Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie…
There’s a Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel too, which is also good.
Julie says
My husband and I watched this last night was great! Those clothes!
Christie says
I watched it today! It was like a Downton Abbey reunion! And a Doc Martin actress too–I love that show. Good movie, thanks for the recommendation!

My son and I watched it today and it is wonderful! Don’t know when I have seen a movie this good in ages. I found you quite by happenstance. I was looking for rug Hooking supplies and you popped up. I would love to know how to find the older posts on that subject you have written and also when and what landed you on the east coast? I couldn’t find how to look at older posts only older ones send specifically to me. I feel like a secret society member now. I just finished the secret book, and scone society and it was wonderful too! You might like it too! And yes I believe books do bring people together!
Mavis Butterfield says
I’m glad you’re here Carol!
There is a search bar at the top of the blog but you need to be kind of specific when using it.
