Maybe it’s the nostalgia of us quickly approaching becoming empty nesters, but I’ve been in the mood for coming of age stories lately. A friend recommended I watch The Way, Way Back…well, way, way back when, and I am just getting in the mood. It’s about a boy who travels with his mom, his mom’s boyfriend, and the boyfriend’s daughter to a summer house in the Hamptons. The boy ends up working for a water park, and there, finds the confidence he’s been lacking. It’s also supposed to be pretty darn funny. Fingers-crossed that it delivers.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it. Did you love it? Hate it? Can’t wait to watch it over and over?

I saw it and was pleasantly surprised. If you liked Napoleon Dynamite, I think you will like this one.

This was a big hit with the whole family. Steve Carrell’s role is a departure, and Toni Collette is always good. I think I need to see this again!

Great film. Just rewatched it last weekend 🙂

I saw this when it was in the theaters because I’m willing to see just about anything that has Sam Rockwell in it. (Smart, cocky and funny with a sensitive side and killer dance moves? What’s not to love?!!) Anyways, I wound up really enjoying this movie; a very touching coming-of-age story.

I’d heard about it and heard it was good, but it exceeded my expectations for sure!

My kiddos and I really enjoyed this movie.

I ended up really really liking it, too!

Why are you saying “Peace out Girl Scouts”?
Mavis says
It’s just a funny little rhyme I’ve been saying for years. Just nonsense. No real meaning!

I liked the movie. I hated Steve Carell’s role. I love Steve Carell so was sad to see him play the biggest douche. Wish an unknown had played it so I could have just completely hated him. Because sadly it makes me look at Steve differently now. And not in a good, oh he’s so diverse, way. More like a oh, is he like that in real life way… but I do own the movie but it was good otherwise.

I had that same problem. It was almost creepy to see him in a role like that!

Hi Mavis – I haven’t seen The Way, Way Back, but it’s on my list. I thought you might be interested to know it was filmed in my town, Marshfield, MA! Steve Carell lives here part time (I’ve never seen him, though). While they were here filming, the crew used our church hall for their catering company to prepare and serve meals. They filmed in one of the beach neighborhoods of our town and took over a couple of houses for the movie sets. All this caused quite a stir around town!

Really? It was filmed in “Mahsh”-field? I spent some of childhood in Plymouth. How did I forget that this was set on the Cape? Another good reason to watch it again!
