If you are a local, and are interested in ordering some spring chicks this year, you’ll want to give my friend Lisa over at the Garden Sphere in Tacoma a call. Garden Sphere GUARANTEES their chicks to be hens and they even offer classes for first time chicken owners.
Will YOU be getting chicks this year? If so, what variety are you thinking about?
The Girl is already talking about how she is going to sneak a few Blue Cochin’s chicks past her dad this spring.
WAhoooo!

We are debating between getting a few more Red Sex Links or Golden Comets. They are both really good layers.

Mavis- I live in Olympia and have tried the cochins. They are great birds but one thing about them here in this area is the feathers on their feet. In the spring, fall and winter they are ALWAYS covered in mud. It drove me crazy. Really Really Crazy. It got all caked on looking and my husband thought I was nuts when I was washing the chickens feet off in the laundry room sink. What would the HH think of that???? 🙂

I am ordering eggs for incubation this spring! First timer and so excited. I really want some Black Copper Marans (love the DARK color of the eggs) as well as some easter eggers. Any of your readers know the best place to order eggs (or chicks) online?? I’m on the east coast so I can’t partake in the offerings in your neck of the woods…..

Megan, We order ours for the shop from Meyer Hatchery. They are easy to work with and have always sent us great birds. We did get two bunk hatches and they were very accommodating. They also allow you to order as few as 3 chicks in the prime season. I suggest going with a reputable hatchery as opposed to something like Craigslist. When we order them for the shop we ask for hens only and they are all vaccinated with the Marek’s vaccine. We also don’t medicate our chicks and if they are vaccinated there should be no need to medicate them.
