I grew up eating my grandmother’s jello salad creations at every holiday meal and they were awesome. In fact I’m fairly certain she had stock in Kraft Foods because I don’t remember ever sitting down to a meal without some sort of jello salad on the table. This recipe for cherry cola jello salad is my all time favorite though and it’s perfect alongside the Thanksgiving turkey.
Ingredients
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 can cherry pie filling
1 {20 oz} can crushed pineapple {drained}
1 large box cherry Jell-o
1 cup cherry cola {I used cherry Pepsi}
Directions
Pour cherry Jell-o into a large glass or ceramic serving dish and set aside.
Combine water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to boil. Add pie filling, stir and bring back to a boil. Carefully pour hot liquid over gelatin and stir until it is all dissolved. Add pineapple and cola. Stir well. Refrigerate until set.
Serve alongside turkey instead of cranberry sauce or as a dessert with a little whipping cream.

I love that it says “serves 1 or 12”

Man, I LOVE jello! Wish my family did so I could make all the crazy jello creations of MY grandma — she had some wacky ones and I loved them all. I think there were even mulit-colored mini marshmallows and shredded cabbage & carrots in one of hers. Yum city!

Your Grandma;s recipe says lemon juice too, do you put that? I love the recipe and her handwriting! Sounds like our Grandma’s would have been friends. Love the multi colored mini marshmallows, Jillbert :-). My Grandma loved to put bananas in the red jello!
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope. I never have. 🙂

Question: Do you need to drain the pineapple or not? Recipe doesn’t say and I want to make sure before I make this salad this week. Thanks!!
Mavis says
Drain!!

Do you prepare the jello as per the directions on the box? The box says to add 2 cups boiling water, than 2 cups cold water. Or when you put it in the serving dish, do you leave it in powder form? I don’t want to ruin my first try on this. Thanks.
Mavis Butterfield says
I prepare the Jello exactly as I have it written above. 🙂

This sounds really good and I haven’t had this one before. I have all the ingredients on hand so I may be enjoying it before Thanksgiving. I plan on making a vanilla pound cake and I bet this would be good with a slice of it.

Have you ever put in jello mold and displayed on platter?doable?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. It looks wonderful!

I usually avoid American recipes as I have to translate everything, but this sounds amazing

Thanks!
This sounds good for certain.
I had to hunt through the comments to find out the crushed pineapple is drained. Could you add that info to the recipe?
I’m gonna use drained pineapple juices instead of the water (we only buy canned pineapple in juice).

Oh man, Mavis. I am excited! I don’t love pie or cranberries so much, but I love cherries and cola and jello and this sounds amazing. I just ran to the store to buy all the stuff and they were out of cherry jello. I went to another store because I need this in my life. Looks like maybe everyone is making Cherry Cola Jello Salad! I can’t wait for tomorrow!
Mavis Butterfield says
Becky, you need this Jell-O salad in your life. It’s the best. I hope you like it. 🙂
