Today it’s suppose to reach 80 degrees. Holy cannoli’s people, do you know what a big deal that is up here in Washington state? It’s huge! So this morning I went outside and watered all the plants in the greenhouse really good, and while I was out there I snapped a few pictures to share as well.
If the weather stays in the 80’s, I’m going to have to either harvest all the lettuce we have growing in gutters or transplant it to some containers and stick it under our covered porch where it stays a good 10-15 degrees cooler in the summer. We’ll see. Maybe we’ll have a scorching hot summer this year and we’ll just be out of luck when it comes to fresh salad greens until fall. π
The lettuce I started in a galvanized gutter a few weeks ago is looking pretty good if you ask me.
And so are the tomatoes and cucumbers we’ve got planted in the stock tank.
The pizza garden. Tomatoes, peppers, onions and basil. Yumm-o!
Somethings been munching on my pepper leaves though. Any ideas of what it could be?
Right now I think we have about 7 tomato plants growing in containers and in each one of them I have something different planted at the base of the tomato plant. I mean why waste good unused soil, right? I typically plant lettuce and basil beneath the tomato plants but this year I’d like to try something new. What do you grow alongside your tomato plants? Do you have any suggestions for me?
The herb garden alongside the greenhouse are doing really well right now and it won’t be to long before I’m dehydrating herbs and storing them for winter use.
Garlic chives, yum. Have you tried them? I think I might like them better than regular chives. π
It’s amazing how quickly the garden starts to come alive with just a few days of warm weather. I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to the warm summer weather.
Bring it on!

My top pepper munchers are usually worms or caterpillars of some sort. With how small the nibbles are I’m thinking some kind of moth larvae like geometer. When I find this I usually blast them with BT and if I still notice nibbles then I know I’m dealing with nibblers of the beetle or some other variety.

My guess is that you have a caterpillar hiding under the pepper plant leaves. You could feed him to the chickens π I like to plant marigolds as accents in with my vegetables, maybe you could do a few with your tomatoes?

I have garlic chives and just found a recipe for garlic chive pesto. Am going to try that this afternoon. But keep it contained because I let my get out of control and oh my, I will be able to make enough pesto to fill my freezer.

I’ve had issues with pill bugs this year in my container plants – peppers and tomatoes.

Something is eating on my Lima Bean plants. Just the lima’s, not the beans, squash or anything else. Strange.

I like to plant nasturtiums with my tomatoes and garlic and onions nearby. Stinging nettles improve the flavor of tomatoes (nettles are pretty tasty themselves), but I usually apply nettle tea while they are fruiting instead of planting them (for obvious reasons).

I think pea plants would trellis well on a large tomato plant. I’ve tried it with peppers, but I planted the peas too soon and they outstripped the peppers.

It was 75 here in Port Angeles today and OMG its awesome. I hope it stays. That is summer weather for us π My jalapeΓ±os are doing great but my mini bells are not fairing very well. I am finding a lot of tiny ants all over my soil. Is that bad? If yes how do I get rid of them? This is in the greenhouse.

Hi Mavis! When grasshoppers around, my pepper leaves look exactly like yours.
When it happen I just picked them up and throw them away. Maybe you could feed your chickens an additional protein when you find any grasshopper around.

Yeah, we’ve been having issues with caterpillars this year…. look under the leaves for the little bugger. Usually in a little mass of spider web looking stuff! π Good luck, looks fabulous, jealous of your peas. We missed it this year! π

My Peppers are the same in my French based greenhouse, not slugs, I got rid of those. Just cant find out what insect it could be? Will keep a close eye on them.
