Well, it’s official, the washing machine is dead. I don’t know about you but I cannot stand spending money on appliances. It makes me crazy. Let’s hope the HH finds a good deal on one soon otherwise I’ll have to ask Girly Girl if I can wash my clothes over at her place for awhile.
Have a great weekend everyone,
♥ Mavis

Bummer! The houses I’ve lived in have had old washers/dryers and I’ve never had a problem with them (knock on wood). Same goes with older tvs, microwaves, etc. Seems like new stuff just isn’t made to last. Good luck appliance shopping!

Hi Mavis
Here in Canada my appliance man says DO NOT buy anything that is L G product. He says they are junk and can’t get parts to fix them. Good luck
April says
Check out Speed Queen. Made in USA by a company that only makes washers/dryers. Ours Is my very favorite appliance. They are a little expensive, but I have heard of them lasting for decades.
Cathy says
Oh no! That looks like a newer machine. How old was it? RIP, little buddy 🙂
Delores says
Kind of funny, I read this post just as I was listening to the repair guy working on our washing machine — a front loader as well. It is not completely dead, but it is almost 9 years old and I am not sure if spending $200 on it is worth it. Keep us updated if you find a great deal! I hope it is available here as well. How long have you had yours?
Mavis Butterfield says
Only 8 years. 🙁
janet says
Speed queen, the salesmen told me they are the best washer and dryer that no one has heard of. The are in commercial laundry mats, made in USA. It is worth looking into.
Good luck!

Bummer about the front loader! For a new one, try Home Depo or go to Sears Outlet on 6th Ave in Tacoma. I’ve gotten a couple of appliances at the later location. Just have to make sure the top loader drum is held in place with the spacers, so it doesn’t shift around. My washing machine repair guy (mother board on a top load washer) said the same thing about LG – other stuff is fine, but they don’t make good washers & dryers.
I took the old motherless washer & tore it apart to get to the enameled inner tub to make a patio heater/burn barrel (also takes yard wastes that can’t go into the compost pile). Here’s some websites:

So frustrating! Especially hauling your dirty clothes to someones else house. I have the same washer only couple years newer. We bought it in 06. Ours is on its way out. Two years after we bought it started to leak. Not a good leak just a random when ever it felt like it pee on the floor leak. We had extended warranty and they sent service guy after service guy that couldn’t fix it. Now we are seeing corrosion/rust on the front by the door and bottom so yah not too many years left in it. I just keep a towel on the floor at all times… soo pretty, when guest come by it’s like yah thats to catch the washer pee. When it goes out I’ll probably go with a different brand but at least we know we are going to need one soon and can add it to the budget now. Good luck getting a new one.

Well, heck. My Runner’s World subscription expired the first of this year, and I had decided after much thought to not renew it again. But at $5.99, how could I not? Sigh. Darn you, Mavis.

Ha!

I have that exact same washer. Such a bummer! When I bought it LG was really highly rated, which is why I chose that one. I do know that a lot of repair men don’t like them because they don’t use the standard designs used in USA made ones. That’s why it’s important to find a repair man who does frequent work on LG products, but I hadn’t heard that their washers are of poor quality. Mine is only 4 years and I was hoping to get 10-15. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

My husband has had really good luck finding items we needed to replace on Craigslist. They were all like new and he’s like you and barters them down on the price too! We’ve gotten a washer, dryer, stove and microwave that way.
Jen says
I have an LG just like yours and a few months ago a I thought it was a gonner too. I was not getting any power to it at all. I called LG and the tech support person walked me through some “reset” by unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding a button down. Worked! It was running again in less than 30 seconds.

IMHO ….I’d forgo the front loader and go for the very energy effecient “top loader” from Maytag….it’s huge!!! I bought mine from Lowes when our old Neptune started making noise….Got a great price AND rebate from our utility becuase it’s Energy Star rated. If you’d like the model number….be happy to oblige…Best of Luck!
Delores says
Well, I got mine this morning! I walked into Lowe’s and they had one on sale from $599 to $499 (a Whirlpool). We knew our limit was $500, so I was thankful. Plus, they couldn’t get it in stock for a couple of weeks, so I asked for the floor model and they sold me that one. Then the sales person, who originally told me they could not lower the price of the floor model, took off $50 for me! And then, to make it even better: a kind person left a $25 off coupon at the checkout for the next person who spent over $250 (me!), so I got another $25 off. I ended up paying $530 for a $600 machine: HE top loader (I will never get a front loader again). I hope you get one you end up loving, Mavis! 🙂
