19 years ago on this very day, the Handsome Husband and I were married.
Being the incredibly romantic guy that he is, he walked in the door tonight with 2 enormous boxes of fresh corn and said “Happy 19th Anniversary, here are 2 boxes of corn.”
Looks like someone is going to pull an all nighter {shucking corn}.
Happy anniversary dear.

Happy Anniversary! Most interesting gift I ever got was a 4 inch egg skillet. And a vacuum. Enough said.

I guess he didn’t know that bronze is the 19th anniversary gift. Bronze or Corn, at least he remembered.
Leanna says
Happy Anniversary!!!!!!
Jami says
A dishwasher for Christmas. Ugh.
Celia says
I got a scroll saw once, but I asked for it! Happy anniversary!
Charla Echlin says
That would be a rechargeable screwdriver. Very handy I must say, but not very romantic. I can look back and laugh at that now, and see that those kind of gifts really came from his heart and you know no one helped him pick that one out π I like gifts like that now!
karen stalberger says
I asked for a weed whacker for mothers day last year and got it. LOVE IT!!
Mommy Dearest says
I asked for a toilet seat …and that is what I got….. But I gave him a wax ring …the kind you set the toilet on..and wrapped it like it was from the local jewelers….. UGH…Guess you had to be there! LOL
Linda says
A case of sweet potatoes along with a basket full of stuff all made out of sweet potatoes…..and it was our 19th anniversary!!! LOL!! The card said, “How sweet it is to be loved by you!!” Clever huh?! My teenagers thought it was so funny…and weird!!
Valerie says
The gifts are ALWAYS unique. BUT, the card he got me about three years ago was a classic. It was for our “50th” wedding anniversary – we had only been married for 28 years at the time. He said he knows how much I like recycling things, so after I opened the card, I had to give it back to him. He has recycled it every year since. When we hit 51 years, he’ll have to buy a new one!
Emily says
My Aunt and Uncle have been giving each other the same card for decades. Glad to know this tradition is out there in other families too.
Pat says
I am notoriously difficult to shop for. Prior to going out to sea the wife noticed the DirectChef product magazine I was looking in. She found the items I had been circling and bought me my most favoritist 10″ chef knife. Not very exciting, but I use it just about every day and it is my favorite. Oh Happy Anniversary π
Kathy in Chicago says
We recently celebrated our 10th anniversary. I enjoyed a beautiful dinner out, and saw Tony Bennett in concert. Bob did not come with as the night before when I asked him if he wanted to go out, he said he didn’t think so. I went with a friend from work. Turns out he had a “surprise” dinner planned. Opps! Guess he should have told me about it 1st!
Madam Chow says
He got me a hunting rifle. I don’t hunt.
Madam Chow says
He’s terrific, and also got me lessons on how to shoot it, although I still won’t hunt! Happy Anniversary, and you were and are still lovely!
Dale Ann says
Happy Anniversary to you both!
The most interesting gift…last Christmas I had asked for a certain book. DH purchased it online but never looked at it when the book arrived, just wrapped it. It was the right book, but the cover was on backwards, and the pages were all upside down! LOL
kcb says
A raisin pie.
Madam Chow says
LOL! This is a fantastic post and comment thread.
Robin in SoCal says
Candy bars and a power washer. I love that thing. Best part he got it on sale, that’s my guy.
Robin in SoCal says
BTW you look adorable in that picture.
Pat Gale says
Each wife should have this conversation PRIOR to marriage: ” If there is only a broom, a vacuum might be a present. If you do dishes by hand, a dishwasher might be a present. Under no condition can an ironing board be a present!”
Ricki @ The Questionable Homesteader says
Happy Anniversary!
I’m not married, so I don’t have any funny Anniversary gifts to share…. but I actually love the corn idea (sorry). To me it’s better than a couple dozen roses (although they would have been nice…) as it’s more practical. But then I find that in the colder months I like to put corn in more things (and I love fresh corn on the cob…), so for me it would be a very acceptable gift provided he stayed up all night helping my chuck the corn…
Sakura says
Don’t you just love the “young” pictures of your relationship!
Sheila M. says
A used sewing machine….the very one I said I DID NOT WANT when we were at the store together looking. So, when I saw him ‘playing’ with the feature at the kitchen table I was quite puzzled. Apparently it was MY gift, but he decided he wanted to try it out THREE WEEKS ahead of when he was going to give it to me. By the way….it’s a great used (almost antique when he bought it) Singer sewing machine and I still have it 21 years later. It holds countless precious memories of the clothes and crafts I’ve sewn, repairs I’ve made, and especially teaching my girls to sew. Who knew?
Katie C. says
Happy Anniversary!! That’s a wonderful photo of you two.
I can’t think of any really interesting gifts, but our anniversary seems to get ruined every year. Next year is our 10th. I’m crossing fingers for a getaway!
Randi says
What did the corn say when it was frustrated?
Aw, shucks!
Kristina says
As a student living in London, my husband (then fiancΓ©) mailed me a Swiss Army knife for Valentine’s Day — a *black* Swiss Army knife. I always wondered why, since in addition to the holiday it commemorated, red is also my favorite color. Oh well, I’ve carried that knife since 1988, and still use it all the time. Still have him, too. Guess he knew me better than I thought.
Happy Anniversary! Enjoy your corn.
kim says
i got a whipper sniper for mothers day with fathers day coming up I’m sure hes going to love his new thermomix
Margaret Thele says
My husband got me a post pounder so I could put in more T posts for the horses…

Barbara Walsh says
My husband gave me a humidifier for our first anniversary. Our apartment was very dry!!!
Kim says
before we were married, he gave me a hub cap to replace the one I lost off my Sentra. True Love!
Lana says
Mathematician that he is, my husband figured out our ten thousand days anniversary and had a marble plaque made to commemorate the day. It is small and sits on my kitchen window sill. It makes other females go weak at the knees when they see it but to me it is just the way hubby thinks. Whatever. It was a very sweet thing to do.
Oregon mom says
For our 10year anniversary this month my hubby and went to the local Scandinavian festival (we are not Scandinavian) and then bought new windows for our house.
Kate says
We’ve only been married for 3 weeks (and they said we wouldn’t make it….jk!) but we’ve been together for 3 years.
We had been dating for just over 6 months when my birthday rolled around…we lived together (GASP! I KNOW. I know. But we lived together technically before we started dating…I shared a 4 bedroom apartment at college with 3 boys. My mom wanted to know I was safe, 2 were my best friends, and it allowed me to continue cooking like I was used to: for more than 1 person.)
ANYWAY…He had been talking with our other roommates apparently for weeks and they were all so excited about my gifts. I was just surprised they thought about it ahead of time AND they had them sitting in the foyer, WRAPPED, just begging for my to peek at them. My birthday came…and they said I would probably use these presents and love them more than any I would ever get. I was pretty excited.
What did I get? A new vacuum, a new toilet scrubber, a shower curtain liner (the boy’s bathroom one was so moldy I said I couldn’t get it clean anymore), a new frying pan, a laundry basket full of new cleaners and sponges, and an apron that said “Will cook for shoes” and inside it were a pair of those mop-slippers.” ……….I laughed, and obviously used and loved my gifts. But men’s logic, I tell ya. Our friends on campus thought we were all crazy.
Sherri says
Happy Anniversary, we just celebrated our 31st last week. The most unusual gift I got was several years ago, and I got two loads of dirt. We were building our house and needed dirt, so that was what my gift was. Very unusual, but very needed!
The Nerdy Housewife says
Dr. Scholls gel heel cups. We were newlyweds, and I was dealing with nasty heel spurs. I thought it was so romantic that he saw I needed something and got it without me asking π
Cathy says
Congrats, you two! We’re about to celebrate our 19th next week. π
One Christmas, many moons ago (probably around 1995), my husband got me a book titled “10 Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives” and floormats for my car.
The worst part? He blindfolded me, took me down into our apartment’s parking garage, then ripped the blindfold off, shouting, “TA DA!!!” to present me with my new floormats.
Best. Christmas. Ever.
Betsy says
A nut and a bolt. He had a good metaphor to go with it but I was laughing to hard to really understand it!
suzanne says
When we first married I got the usual flowers and stuff. I’m not that Kinda girl. My favorites are the table saw, miter saw and compressor. Love my hand tools too.
Cecily says
For our first (and second) anniversary my DH took me to……………..the dump! Verrry romantic you know. I must not have minded too much since we celebrated our 15th in May. This year he put in 5 new raised garden beds! Glad I kept him around! Hehe! Happy 19th!
Margaret says
I have had to shuck a box of corn before, and let me tell you: it is not fun.
My mom taught me a trick the last time I went to visit. You take the corn and cut off a little of the stalk end, then put it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes per ear. The husks AND the silk slide right off! The ears always come out perfectly.
Lisa says
Happy Anniversary! You look SO young in your wedding photo!
Helen in Meridian says
Our first xmas he ordered clothes out of the Montgomery Ward clearance catalog. They arrived at the MonkeyWards store in brown paper sack with 75 staples all over it. He didn’t open it, just put it under the tree in stapled brown sack. I worked a 2nd job at a shoe store to buy him a real shearling coatt. When I opened the sack, only one thing arrived out of what he said he ordered. It was a size 22 and I was a size 12. He changed the oil in the car on the 27th and got oil all over the shearling coat. I grew into the size 22 to spite him. Last week was our 40th anniversary. He is taking me on a 15 day Grand European Viking River Cruise in Oct from Budapest to Amsterdam. We adjusted to our ways. I buy things I want all year and put them in his office for him to give me. I buy things for him all year too and he orders what he really wants, and sings Happy Birthday, or Xmas or anniversary when it arrives at the house. Marriage is adjustments.
I that picture really you two? I know how you love to borrow the neighbors, and other characters. Love to you both.
Mavis Butterfield says
YES! It’s me. You are hilarious Helen. Maybe you can find me some wooden shoes size 8 on your trip. 40 years, congrats! π
Annette says
A backpack weed sprayer! 29th years this September.

I have 2 stories to tell. The first one is of my Dad giving my mom for her birthday a fire extinguisher. Really!!! I thought she was going to clunk him in the head. She cried for days!!! I talked to him and he never did that again!! Mom was probably going through menopause at the time. After that Dad always bought jewelry!! Now, my story. Once upon a time in a far off land I mentioned to the “hub” that I would love a really nice over the stove exhaust fan. That’s what I got for Christmas that year, maybe 2004. I tried to act that I loved it, but thank God my daughter said, ” Dad, what were you thinking?” Poor guy got the same talking too that I gave my Dad.. I told him It was okay, at least I didn’t cry!
Laurie says
A wheelbarrow for my 25th. I got a pitchfork the previous Christmas and last year he gifted me with a pair of deerskin gloves.
Our 34th is on Sept 7th. With this as the trend, I’m thinking I shouldn’t be surprised if I get a shovel.
Maybe this is his way of telling me that I spend too much time out in the garden….
butterfly weed says
Mavis, great wedding photo, I didn’t realize you were a child bride! I couldn’t help but notice you had a “farmer tan” on your arms! Guess you have always been an outdoors girl.
Mavis Butterfield says
Gotta love the farmer tan! π

One year he got me “surprise” implementry for the tractor! We needed the equipment but I wasn’t expecting to receive it as a gift! We have been married now for forty-three years, and in all fairness, I have to say that he has also given me several lovely pieces of jewelry on other special occasions–but I’ll never forget getting the equipment!

I’d been talking about dyeing my hair and couldn’t quite decide to do it. For my birthday, my husband bought a box of hair color (he nailed what I was thinking about) and a fifth of vodka. I was a redhead for about ten years after that. (We’ve been married for 24 and generally don’t bother with gifts. Every day life together is more than enough.) Another great one was the planer my father-in-law gave me for Mother’s day one year. (We remodeled the house from top to bottom and I love power tools)
Lora says
Love this. Liquid courage.
Just this last Christmas my husband gave me an antique stereo. In a solid cherry cabinet, from the 1950’s. A full-on piece of furniture. The sound (from real tubes) is amazing. Having a blast collecting vinyl.
Later this month we are celebrating our 17th anniversary. Tonight he is changing the “guts” in our master toilet because the way it is now we have to lift the back lid off to get the damn thing to flush. He is trying to sell it as an early anniversary gift.
Amanda says
I received a two pack of enemas wrapped in black leggings from my mother for the Christmas I was 13. I know, it makes her sound like a horrible person, but let me explain. I was a terribly nosey child, and would try everything I could to figure out my gifts. I was the MASTER at rewraps also. I could peel tape with no evidence left. This particular gift had me most perplexed, I opened one end ever so carefully, and deduced it was leggings from the material and hem, however I knew leggings were not that heavy
So I gave ‘er a real good shake and heard liquid sloshing about. Being an ever so much smarter than my mother 13 year old, I just knew she had bought me a bottle of perfume trying to hide it in leggings. Pathetic mother, I thought as I relished in my discovery. Christmas morning came, and I really wanted to know what kind of perfume I had received. I snatched up my gift, and told my mother that I KNEW what this was. Imagine the look on my face when I unrolled the leggings, and two boxed enemas plopped in my lap! In front of the ENTIRE family including very cute friends of my cousin spending Christmas with us! Needless to say I was never that nosey again.
Fionnuala says
Our first Christmas – an iron! We were broke and needed an iron. I gently explained to husband that an appliance is never ok as a present, we still smile about our first Christmas gift. Now we just circle what we want in a catalog and act thrilled when we open the ‘surprise’ presents!
Megs says
My aunt got me dog treats for my dog for MY birthday! He loved them!!!
Margery says
Our 20th anniversary was on the 28th and my husband is always creative, this year he wanted to get me a map of China, and a fortune cookie. But because of time he could only get my gift at the food store. So I got a lasange pan made in China and a can of Chinese food. Good thing we had our real gift in April when we went to London.
Jayne says
Happy anniversary! I think it is sweet that he knew what would make you happy! My best presents from hubby have been a mushroom growing kit, and when he built a new raised garden bed for Mothers Day and a chick brooder box for my birthday. Things that I love and make me happy!!
