Ring Ring Hello…
Did you know you will spend an average of 43 days on hold over your lifetime? Hold the phone {pun intended}, forty three days?! Makes me wonder, how many days I’ve wasted screaming, “speak to a customer service representative”, because the voice-prompted recording “couldn’t understand my selection”?
What a waste of time!
It got me thinking, though, what do people do while they are on hold? {Surely, they’re not all taking the time to enjoy the Kenny G. hold music?}
So what do YOU do when you’re on hold?
Are you wasting your 43 days or making the most of the time?

Anything I can. Except they always answer when I am furthest from my notes so I have to run to get to them.

I put the phone on speaker and then continue to use the computer or do little chores while I’m waiting.

Me too.

If I were on hold now I would be refereeing my 2 older boys, staring at my new baby chicks (that I had to blog about today) and keeping my 5 month old happy. I´m a busy lady.

Plug a pair of headphones into my phone, shove my phone somewhere (pocket/bra whatever) and walk around taking care of things. I can waste enough time talking about the weather and telling them I can’t hear them to get back to whereever I need to be. Get lots of “dumb” chores done that way…
And then when I’m done, if it’s tramautic enough, I whip out my People magazine and sit with my feet up the same amount of time I was on hold doing stuff. As my little reward 🙂

I have a job as a video relay interpreter (interpret phone conversations for people who use sign language..not typing (TTY) but using sign language…I can see the caller on a screen) Soo, I’m pretty certain I spend even more than 43 days on hold.
Automated attendant is the worst! :p
But, I do get paid for it and I can check email and see what fab things Mavis is giving away. 😉

No way!! You’re a relay terp! I am deaf!! I was mainstreamed as a kid so I was taught to read lips and speak and ASL was not allowed in my home!! I am learning it now and loving it! It’s so nice to not have to be the one that works hard all the time to understand what is being said! Anyway, cool to see you on here!
Bridget says
So happy you are able to use ASL now!!
Glad to see you on here too! 🙂

I was on hold a few months ago with the cable company for over 2 hours…no exageration! I cleared out, organized, and cleaned my entire pantry. It ended up being a blessing because I usually don’t have time to do those kinds of things unless I plan a day to do it.

I clean my kitchen when I am on the phone, either on hold or with someone else. I will wipe down all the places I “forget” like the stove hood, or cabinets.
